TWIC Cards
« on: July 20, 2008, 03:44:48 »

Just curious. What are your opinions on the TWIC( Transportation Workers Identification Card)? Are they suppose to phase out MMD's(Merchant Mariner's Document)?

I think that is the plan. Right now you have to have both and I don't see it changing in the near future. It is quite expensive (MMD $175 TWIC 135) when you think about renewing both in 5 years. I got mine just before the first of the year and I waited 4 weeks from start to finish. People tell me now that there is a huge wait.

Here in the U.S. The government has come out with a new document that all merchant mariners are soppose to have by september of this year. They say it is for port security. But I think it's just another way to get money out of us since we have to pay to get it and renew it.

Wow.. I'm glad I obtained mine early. It did take a few weeks for me to get it though.

What are TWICS

It is a credential U.S. mariners are being required to have. It is a card the size of a credit card which includes your picture and an embedded chip which contains information about you. People who do business or are members of all U.S. transportation branches (rail, air, shipping, dock workers, etc.) will be required to have one.

The MMD is a card also that looks like a driver's license and give information about you and your rating/qualifications.

The government is trying to combine the two as they both serve the same function, especially in the shipping world.

When I was at a hotel on Cape Cod I saw this interesting little invention,
It highly resembles the old industrial "Time card punches" but it's the modern version.

It doesn't really look like this picture but you get the idea.

This one that I saw worked on a credit card electrical system.
