Hi Dan,
To be honest I have not so much idea about the maritime training and classification in EUR and or UK but when is something about money that you shall expend for the courses it's not so different from here too.
I had got some certification here for the marine school it's really a lot of money.

Hope you find an easy way and get your planned and wished route.

Cheers

G'day, dansents, maybe you can work your way up from another job in the marine industry, I am not very sure about in EUR but here in Aust. You don't always need certain qualifications if you have good experience in the job... if you understand me... i.e you want a job as a master on a ferry... the qual. needed is marine engine driving III... but if you start as a deckhand on the ferry.... work up experience and understanding of how everything works. Your employer may suggest you then take the course.. by then you should have saved up enough to pay for it... Also is there any ''HECS'' program that the college (or whatever it is there) have? there are many ways to start.. you can't expect to go and apply for Captain of a cruise ship straight off :p

thanks hope I have helped a little?

What qualifications are you on about?   If its what you want to do the you wont be throwing the money away, think of it as an investment in yourself.

I Am wanting just the basic training package that's all. I am only wanting a bar job which i have six years experience in but just not at sea. So i really don't want to be forking out £400.00 to a Marine agency to find out the certification i got means nothing. and would need to re do it for another shipping company.

If you want a bar job on a vessel, you should see exactly what the requirements are... then when you do the test you can be 100% certain that you've got all the right criteria..

Hi Dan,

When i went to sea i was sponsered by a shipping company during my cadetship who paid for all my short course necessary.   There is a worldwide shortage of qualified ships officers, deck officers, engineering officers and hotel services officers.

It might be worth talking to The Merchant Navy Training Board and they can point you in the right direction.   Incidently if you live near the Solent, Red Funnel ferries, are looking for a Services Officer(Purser/Hotel Services Officer), so have a look at their website and ask them some questions!

Good luck, if you make it its a great job!  ;)

Hi Dan,

I'm aware that this thread is about a month old, but could be useful to you or others considering a career at sea.

Shipping companies are continuously recruiting for new Officers and crew - Deck/engine Officers are in high demand so future prospects are good.  However your post said that you're after a job in one of the onboard bars - just contact the appropriate shipping companies (e.g. P&O Ferries, Brittany Ferries, LD Lines, Seafrance, Wightlink, Red Funnel).  ALL crew members who work on ships have to undergo a training programme, even if they are not directly responsible for the safety of the ship and it's passengers/other crew - some companies may pay for crew training.

Alternatively you could consider applying to a cruise line where you will benefit from unrivalled travel opportunities and a completely different lifestyle.

I for one have applied to start a sponsored degree and extensive training programme as a Deck Officer with a major cruise line - the course starts in September 2008 and I will hopefully be fully qualified within 3 years.  Then you have the opportunity to rise on up through the ranks to Chief Officer and Captain.

If you really want a career at sea then you may prefer to take up one of these Deck (or Engine) positions; however to become a Ship's Officer you will be required to go through a lot of training and practical work experience.  A career at sea (as an Officer or crew member) is not easy - the hours are long and if you work deep sea then you'll be away from your family/friends for extended periods of time.  However, the working hours for crew operating on the English Channel are different - I believe it's something like 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off.  But check this at the interview if you are offered one!

Good luck! :-)

Hi James,

good luck with the training!   I started mine in 1999 and by 2002 was a Third Officer on a Tanker company.   I mainly worked in NW Europe in ships up to 38,000dwt.   It was hard work but good fun.   I got my Ch.Mate/Masters in 2005, and after sailing as Ch Officer on larger vessels and Master on smaller vessels i came ashore when i got married.   Still work in the industry and get to keep my hand in..with ShipSim, Marine School simulators and full size ships too!  ;D

Its a hard job but the rewards are worth it and not to mention it is a very enjoyable job too!

all the best and happy sailings!

Like James above said ... this is such an old topic that I feel almost embarassed bringing it back up , but just for final information for anyone ... and a dirty plug of course :) ...

Sponsorship to train as a Deck Officer Cadet with Clyde Marine Training ( http://www.clydemarinetraining.com/ (http://www.clydemarinetraining.com/) ). Its simple to apply , and if successful you get invited for interview and subject to passing a medical and a satisfactory referance , then you start a alternating college and sea course with whatever sponsoring company you have given preferance to join ( although it cant be garunteed your preffered sponsoring company is recruiting at that point ). If unsuccessful then at least its one option you have explored , and sponsorship is difficult to gain in any industry these days. Lastly , there is a VAST majorty of companies that do sponsor Cadets through Clyde Marine Training ... and P&O Irish Sea and P&O Short Sea are 2 of them!!! ...

http://www.clydemarinetraining.com/content/training/sponsors.asp (http://www.clydemarinetraining.com/content/training/sponsors.asp)

Its worth a look for sure guys! All information required is on the websites above.
