im downloading new patch and just wondered if you need to install them

you dont need to but they give you multiplayer two new ships give some bug fixes

Just in case there is a misunderstanding here..

if you want to use the patch, you need to run it and thus install it.  not just download them and keep it on your hard drive as such.   


So yes, you need to install them to make them work.
But no, it's not mandatory to patch your game.
