What are your professions in the Maritime field? Feel free to post and add comments about your profession whether your retired, active at sea, or work in the office of shipping companies. Feel free to post your past experiences and rank on board as well. Would like to see the wide variety of experience and expertise we have here on this forum.

The inland vessel industry,is quite big here in Belgium,The Netherland,Germany.
So can you add,this to your topic-poll.

Now,i can vote.
Inland vessels are my profession.However i started on sailyachts(boats when i was young).Than i went to sea.Now i'm in this sector.
I still sail,when they need me to get a yacht from one place to another.Even motorboats.

You might add Oceanographer. We donâ€™t often get to steer the boat, but we share in most of the other pleasures and indignities.

I'm completing my school for maritime scientistic and completing the 1st step for the pilotage 3 more years about I'll be ready.

Hello everyone.

For myself I'm training to be an able seaman in Brittany (beside france).
I will try to go to Ireland to school at cork after a few years sailing to hopefully be able to becom an officer.

Hi al,

I spent 6 years at sea, my last rank was Chief Officer, though i hold a Masters ticket (up to 3000gt). I worked for a British company, who operated a fleet of product tankers up to 15000dwt in size, mainly around Europe but also occasionally further afield, such as the USA and Korea.

I came ashore when i got married and now work as a Cargo Superintedant / Operations Manager for a large Oil Major.

Still get to play with yachts at the weekend and also I have joined the Maritime Volunteer Service (www.mvs.org.uk) so that i can pass on my skills to other people who have an intrest in the sea!

I live in TN in the USA and the Cumberland river are filled with barges.

I started my career in the navy, stayed there for about 4 1/2 years always sailed on fregates.
4 years as sailor then quatermaster on the ferries (Ostend-Dover)
3 years on a lightship (West-Hinder)
6 years as a sailor then skipper on the Belgian Pilotboats.
5 years on shore as lockmaster.
And recently (two years) as a coastguard officer.
In between i worked for a salvage company and was captain on a (coastal/harbour) tugboat.

I had been working for three years as officer on supply ships, mainly in Africa: Nigeria, Cameroun, Gabon, Congo, Angola, and also in Tunisia and Lybia. Now I'm doing my last year of merchant officer school in Marseille.
I also had two contracts before on gaz tanker vessels LNG and LPG.

My time was spent in the Royal Navy - Royal Naval Auxiliary Service (RNXS) Port Head Quarters Branch (OPs & Commms) then I moved to the Royal Navy Reserve (RNR) Logistics Branch. After I left the service I volunteered with the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC) as an Instructor. I also support the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI)

looks like we have something in common. I am in Maritime Academy in England. I will be doing my OOW orals in January. Previously, I was a fast ferry captain in my country, decided to come to the UK to get a OOW ticket to take me further in my career. Good luck in your studies.

The OOW "Ticket" is Merchant Navy slang for the "Certificate of Compertancy as an OOW (Unlimited) STCW 95, reg II/I." Usually shortened to "2nd Mates Ticket" for obvious reasons. Have alook at this website to get an idea of some of the things that you need to know to be a ships officer! Thats whay it takes 10years to become a Master Mariner!

Ok thanks dhart. I was just asking for "OOW". I know what is in the STCW 95 (I read it several during my watch) but in french so there are some english termes I don't know.
