I found a solution to my start-problem (see abowe) today on the steam forum.
Poster Tytorgutiar gave this very useful advise that solved both mine and several other Steam users startup problems with SSE.
I just copy in his comment here:

I found a fix that worked. I had the same problem as you.
Here was my solution.
First open windows explorer, my computer/Cyour hard drive where the game is saved)/program files x86(if you use vista)/steam/steamapps/common/ship simulator extremes/resources/redist.
Now install the following.
dxwebsetup. Note you may have to run this program to uninstall and then run it again to reinstall.
Physx_9.10.0129_systemssoftware.
vcredist.
After installing these files you will need to restart your computer.
When you log in to steam and try to start SSE it will seem as though it is not going to start but it will run for a few minutes and then away it goes.
I will not take credit for this fix as I found this solution on the internet.
