New SSE User with a couple of questions
« on: May 06, 2012, 06:27:54 »

Greetings all,

I'm new to the Ship Simulator series, having just purchased Ship Simulator 2008 Collector's Edition for my laptop, and Ship Simulator Extremes for my main pc. In any case, my questions pertain to SSE specifically.

First off, I purchased my download version of SSE from Amazon. This did not require Steam (and as such, I figure that DLC's for SSE can't be purchased through my Steam account.) So my question is, can I only buy DLC content from the place I originally purchased the game (Amazon), or can I purchase them from anywhere that sells them (other than Steam, obviously) in the event of sales/discounts?

Second, since I purchased through Amazon, I know there aren't automatic updates like Steam, so is it ok to patch from the updates on the ShipSim site, or do I have to stick with whatever version I downloaded from Amazon? (I have not checked the version yet, so I'm not sure if it's already up-to-date or not, but even if it is up-to-date, I want to be sure that any possible future patches can be applied to my game.)

I've got to say that I'm enjoying playing both games tremendously. While SSE was too much for my laptop to handle, SS2008CE runs beautifully on it and SSE runs and looks fantastic on my main pc. So it's like I'm getting the best of both worlds, and loving every second of it! :)

Thanks in advance for any information.

Thank you TJK, I very much appreciate the information. :) I just wanted to be sure that downloading any patches or DLC's from a source other than Amazon (which I don't believe actually even makes updates available) would work, and not 'break' my game forcing me to reinstall. You have confirmed what I expected, and that's good news! :)

Thank you again, for taking the time to respond.

I just wanted to say thanks again. I just updated my SSE with the updates from ShipSim.com (v1.3.5, then v1.4, and finally v.1.5 (Build 1095)). Just as a point of reference, the Amazon download was build 1040, v1.2.2.

All up to date now. Thanks for the assistance! :)

Thank you very much for the welcome, Jim! :)

I must say that I'm enjoying the Ship Simulator games immensely. I can't believe I held off for so long considering I really enjoy simulation-based games, and have had SSE in my wish list at Steam for the longest time. I'm really glad I purchased both SSE (for my main pc), and SS2008CE (for my laptop), as I'm able to get the full enjoyment out of both games (and obviously a lot more to do than just one game alone!) Also very glad to see that this seems to be a pretty active, friendly, and helpful community, and I'm happy to be a part of it!

Thanks for the info Tore,

I will definitely remember that when I start purchasing some DLC. Right now I've got so much to do between both games that my head is spinning! :)
