Vessel sinks of wales coast - 5 missing - 2 rescued - 1 dead
« on: November 27, 2011, 14:08:47 »

A crewman on a cargo carrier which has sunk off the coast of north Wales has been found dead, coastguards have confirmed.

Five crew from the 81-metre (265ft) Swanland are still missing.

The ship, with 3,000 tonnes of limestone onboard, disappeared 30 miles north-west of the Lleyn peninsula.

Two RNLI lifeboats, with four search and rescue helicopters and two commercial boats, are taking part in the search.

Two other rescued crew members have been taken to hospital in Bangor.

The Swanland's crew raised the alarm at about 02:00 GMT...

RB, I'll think you'll find far more than 2 ships have sunk during your lifetime. Theres a satistic somewhere that said 1 large vessel a week sinks.

I agree with danny. On the science channel I saw something that said three or four vessels sink per month, But the reason you don't hear of them most likely is that most of them go unreported..

The search for the remaining crew members has been called off, the coastguard will make a decision on whether or not to resume the search tomorrow morning, although by that stage it will be a search for bodies rather than survivors.  How very sad.

Yes, its very saddening :(
there's an awful lot of speculation that the reason she went under was because she broke her back.

It would seem so, that's not unheard of with bulk carriers.

Good place to see what's happening is ofcourse the classic Cargolaw (http://www.cargolaw.com/presentations_casualties.php).
Just scroll the window down to see.

An interesting read (http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.telegraph.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fworldnews%2F8273847%2FSea-no-evil-the-life-of-a-modern-sailor.html&h=bAQEbUh2PAQFzitwQMC_iX4Mgd7SG787bYbedqqlG_nhqrQ)

I think the figure quoted is 37 sinkings per year, and that is the ones which the owners (or someone) report.

Regarding the Cargolaw reports there were 35+ ships which sunk from July to this day, so I'd say 70+ ships sunks in a year.
