New Extreme User with basic questions.
« on: September 03, 2011, 14:59:30 »

I played and loved Ship Sim 2006 and 2008 for years.

Ship Ship Sim Extreme however has me baffled and some what disappointed. I can't seem to figure out where I am so that I can find my way back to port and where I am going as the circle and triangle sometime move for no reason I can see.

I did the early mission with the barrels being thrown into the harbor. All I had to do was to get back to port,, I tried for hours and nothing worked as the display in the upper right corner didn't show any way points. I was also unable to find my own ship on that display. If I followed the circle and triangle it told me (after a while) mission failed as I was of of environment.

BTW...I read the manual and it assumed that you knew a lot more than you did. It was of little value.

Hi Alan,

I’ve not found time to write a Missions Manual for Extremes, as I did for SS2008, but there are some documents available in the bold blue topics on the Missions board. You might find some of them useful.

The Mission Editor Notes should give you some idea of how missions work in Extremes—quite differently from the way they worked in SS08.

Very very disappointing. I am sorry I made this purchase as I have tried everything I can think of and nothing works. I have a game that looks great but doesn't work very well.

It is hard to get where you are going when you can't see the destination or even where you currently are.

The navigation just doesn't seem to work very well. When you can't even find your way back to port after a simple mission something is really wrong.

As you pointed out the game manual wasn't done or wasn't done well as I did read it and it left much to be desired.

It their a refund policy?

I really enjoyed SS2008 until much of it didn't work after I switched to Windows 7.

Sorry to be so negative but that is the reality of the situation. Why did they ruin a game that I played and loved for years. SS2006 and SS2008 were just great.

BTW where or what are the "The Mission Editor Notes"?

Hello Slk,

Is your computer compliant with the System Requirements for SSE ?

Please post the Dxdiag of your computer, so that we can take a look.

My computer is more than compliant with System Requirements for SSE.

In fact I found that to be the problem. SSE defaulted to the native resolution of my systems monitor which is 1920 X1080. While that made the graphics look great it made everything very tiny. So tiny in fact that navigation using way points was just about impossible.

After I switched to 1024 X 768 things looked and worked much better. It is still very cumbersome trying to find your way back to port after a mission as you can't really see the location of the mooring until you are very close.
This was never a problem in SS 2006 or 2008. As we all know way points are line of sight  you can follow a way point into a wall if that was all you had to go by but at least I am able to play.

Hello Slk,

Yes, at times one cannot see the next waypoint, but you can expand the chart to full screen and use the + or - to adjust the scale and you should be able to spot the waypoint.

As for the monitor resolution, I am using1440 x 900 in 'windowed' mode and it seems to about right for me.

Hi Alan,

Before you give up completely ( and believe me I have almost done so a number of times ) it is worth persevering - true, SSE will drive you nuts with frustration at times, just when you think you have figured something out something else will pop-up......maybe you have seen my post regarding the Albtatross Bow Visor issue.....just suddenly popped up ( literally in terms of the visor :-) ) out of the blue. But with a lot of patience and perseverance you can also get a lot of enjoyment from SSE......

With regard to your problems in finding your way around - if you are running a mission, on the compass at the bottom l/h side of the screen you can turn on the Waypoint Indicator, this is a button with a small circle adjacent to the N ( North-up ) button immediately below the compass....when turned on a small white circle will appear on the compass indicating the direction that you need to head for to the next Waypoint....be careful though, depending on the mission this may route you through shallow water/obstacles etc. so you may need to occasionally deviate from direct routing but at least you will know in which direction to sail........as you get closer  to the destination you should be able to see the green star on the chart, you can zoom the chart in and out as vin_sun explained.

hope this helps.

WAYPOINTS:
Waypoints in SSE are quite different from those in SS 2008. The familiar visible waypoints that are shown on the stack on the left of the ’08 screen are gone, along with the stack itself and those unrealistic green circles on the water.

What are sometimes referred to as “waypoints” in SSE are more like the hidden, or EX, triggers of ’08.
Those hidden triggers were the main problem players had in completing ’08 missions.
In SSE, the location of those triggers is marked on the chart by a green sunburst. If the distance to the trigger is too great initially, you may not be able to zoom out enough to see it on the small chart. You must first approach closer using the clues on the conning display.
The course to the trigger is shown by the CTW at the bottom and by the small open circle on the conning circle (if you have activated the middle button below the conning circle).

The CTW is the direct heading to the trigger and might pass through something solid; you need to plan your actual course on the chart to stay in the deeper wet part.

The DTW is to the center of the trigger, not to the point where you will activate the trigger; that could be hundreds of meters closer.
Unfortunately, you don’t know the trigger radius; the trigger can happen unexpectedly and you may find yourself disconcertingly aboard a different ship.
