iPhone os4 ... app idea ... SSE
« on: August 25, 2010, 00:41:32 »

I don't know if any of you, with iPhones or iPod touches or even iPads, would be interested in this idea ... but I'll pitch it to you anyway.  I also don't know if Vstep would be interested or could/would even support this idea.

quick disclaimer ... I have searched the forums and found no sign of this idea ... but I could be wrong.

I have seen many apps recently which can connect to the computer via a WiFi network to control different things ... mouse, keyboard, PC/Mac game or numerous other things.  That got me thinking ... could it be possible to build an app that could function with SSE??

Literally either using the accelerometers for steering the vessel with the screen used for throttle/engine control ... or the screen used for both steering and engine control??

It could be a fun task and it would save those of us without the cash to buy or insufficient knowledge/skill to build or buy our own controller but can buy an Apple iOS device... yeah that sounds dumb but anyway.

Thoughts?

I'd be all for an Android version of the same... while I'm not sure exactly what it would be useful for, it's always fun interfacing gadgets with other gadgets.

That would probably rather be a matter of hardware processing power per specific device, I would think? Although some of the WP7 phones do seem to have pretty good hardware. But will WP7 have enough market penetration to prove a viable developement platform? Most people I know shun WP7 like the plague, and swear to either iOS or Android..

That is absolute rubbish!!  No mobile phone is powerful enough to run ship sim extremes...that is completely ludicrous and idiotic for you to make such a comment!

Plus the fact that I was suggesting the iPhone, android, wp7 phones to be made into WIRELESS CONTROLLERS!!

Depends. Xplane has been ported to iPhone quite successfully. Ok, ported is the wrong word as it is pretty much an entierly new build, but it uses the same blade theory physics and graphics are eons beyond that of the flashy(!) Xbox LIVE examples posted above.

I doubt VSTEP has any interest in building a mobile version of the game though, just saying that its not impossible with todays mobile hardware. The best phones today are considerably more capable than the previous generation of gaming consoles.

Take the Samsung Galaxy S for example, its got a 1GHZ Hummingbird CPU (considered more effective per Hz than the Snapdragon) and a PowerVR SGX 540 (200MHz) graphics chip capable of 90 mio. triangles per second (peak). Also 512MB Mobile DDR dedicated memory.

The XBox had a (custom) 733MHz PIII Coppermine CPU, a 233MHz XGPU capable of 125 mio. triangles(again, peak), and 64MB ram. Also worth noting that the SGX540 has been benchmarked at a stable, sustainable 1Gpix/sec at 50% shader load, while the  XGPU only did 932 Mpix/sec under similar trials. Also, the SGX540 supports OpenGL 2.0, where the XGPU was limited to 1.4

That is completely irregardless and absolute rubbish as well!  X-planes doesn't have anywhere near decent graphics ...you can't fly that well with it, abeit better than keyboard & mouse with FSX, you can only fly within the radius of 3 airports and it's very well built if we are all honest.

Yet again this is away from the whole point and topic!!  The topic is for a wireless controller built for iOS, android and even WP7.

To make SSE available for the iPhone or te above mentioned would invole that Vstep had an interest in bringing it to the Marketplace and if we are all honest we know they won't....so why defend something which be both know will never happen and is completely ludicrous in this day and age... I can see SSE being playable ona mobile device, like an iPhone, in 4 maybe 5 years time but there is not enough processing power, graphics processing power or ram memory to allow it to happen!

Right if you know why make such a stupid and pointless post.  My tone may be aggressive to you....that's your right, but you're wrong.

Also why are you bringing up that iPhone is less powerful??  That has nothing to do with the topic.  You are being completely and utterly irrelevant with your posts.

I know that :D ... If I was anymore calm I'd be horizontal :p

@jeanfla

... Your last post made no sense ... to me at least.  You are saying that Windows Phone 7 is more powerful ... big whoop ... that has nothing to do with the topic and could be seen as "topic jacking".   Your answers may not be stupid but they are completely and utterly irrelevant to the topic ... and it does seem like you are only trying to create an argument for no apparent reason.
