HMS endurance is to be scrapped!
« on: February 13, 2011, 15:20:40 »

As im sure most of the brits on this forum may know, back in 2008 the RN antartic patrol ship HMS endurance sufferd catastrophic flooding of her engine spaces and C deck. The plan was to refit the old girl, however, thanks to mister brown and his bailouts (grumbles and swears under his breath) she is now going to be scrapped  :o :'( :'(  :C

"Navy scrap ice breaker HMS Endurance

By Euan Stretch 9/09/2010

The Royal Navy is to scrap the damaged icebreaker HMS Endurance and replace it with a Norwegian ship, senior naval sources have revealed.

Originally the Navy said it would fix the vessel which was transported home in December 2008 when she almost sank off the coast of Chile after a valve was opened during maintenance and flooded the ship.

Scrapping the stricken Endurance, also bought from Norway, will save around £30million but the Navy has not decided whether to lease or buy the new icebreaker which may be given the same name.

The new ship will join the fleet next year and then leave for an 18-month deployment in the South Atlantic.

Portsmouth South MP Mike Hancock said: "Bringing in something new seems the most logical step."
Whats interesting is that they plan to get there hands on another icebreaker from norway, however, considering most icebreakers they have had from norway have gone wrong in one way or another that doesn't seem logical to me (no offence intended)
you can read the admirlty report about the incident here : http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/B53F6F66-AD2C-40B6-A460-456C96ECCC8D/0/service_inquiry_flooding_hms_endurance.pdf
