Had problems before...what if
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:39:19 »

By what I been reading, and still reading is we are now being able to model for SS08. I ran in to problems with Microsoft's Flight Sim-x with a technical problem that just made me lose 100% interest in modeling and repaints for FSX. The problem was I had people who wanted certain paint jobs (repaints) on their models which mostly where Bought-on-line special interest types that when done they wanted to take that model in to the multi-player on-line airfields and show it off.

The problem was if "player -A-" had a special Model, and "Player-B-" didn't have that particular model with that repaint, "Player -B-" would not see "Players-A-" model or his fancy paint job, instead "Player -B-" would see the closes stock model to what he had in his inventory of available Aircraft.

Playing around with my own repaints on my own models, I began posting pictures of them and no sooner did I post a picture of a model...the request for repaints jammed my email box full of paying request, when I would explain the reality side of the program to the person requesting a repaint that no one will "see" your repaint "on-line" in muti-player and repainting them would only fill a self-gratification, 99% of the request no longer had interest. and the couple I did do for others that where wanted to pay I did pro-bono because they where sons of veterans or veterans wanting a B-17 or a FU-51 with pilot names on the side which was no big deal to do

That's about how I lost interest in Model making and repaints in flight sim's, but now I am reading we can do modeling and I would assume repaints for SS08, my question is as with FSX will I run into the same problem with guys who will want to go on line to show off their boats?

I have a "group" of guys that if I can make them an electronic version of their boat that they can show off and play in I am sure they will have an interest in SS08 to help pass the winter dul-droms away, so I am leaning towards thinking if it is like FSX in online play that the guys will have to share their models with each other but I am not sure.

I understand this is allot to digest, but any advice would be helpful.

Hello houston144,

3rd party addon creation without the direct approval and cooperation of Vstep is not possible, I'm afraid.

You cannot put your own creations in the game. And as for reskinning, there are only a handful of ships that can be reskinned, most of which non-player vessels.

If you create something of good enough quality, Vstep will consider a cooperation with you to include it in the game, but since SS08 is no longer under development, this would only still apply for SSE. And no hard guarantees as it also needs to make sound economic sense. Vstep has chosen to stay in control of the content as opposed of other games where this often results in an abundance of substandard content, often with a lot of incompatibility problems between players with different addons.

furthermore, the tools are simply not available for someone to do this on his or her own, it requires specific, in-house used programs that the general public cannot obtain. Hence the need for Vstep to do a lot of that work. Creating a model is one, but implementing it, you can't do that yourself.

The new venue here is the CCC where model making is poured into a competition form, but there as well, it's just for SSE and only in cooperation with Vstep. If this will change in the future to a more free form of content creation is unknown and for the near future, unlikely.

But the same would still apply between those that do or do not have certain vessels in their game, as it also does with Ship Sim 2008 already. If player A has an addon vessel that player B does not have, they cannot play on the same server, because the server would reject the player without the vessel needed to connect. So the vessels you can choose from are server-defined. If you haven't go it, you can't play on that server.

I hope this answers your question.

Kind Regards,
Fred
