SH5 VS. SSE
« on: September 05, 2010, 01:29:26 »

VS.

Those are just two pictures but I thought I should explain what's good and what's not good about both simulators.

1. Graphics: To me, the obvious winner here is SH5. You can't beat the Graphics in any game. Bow wake, Stern wake. Bow spray, stern spray. The environment it's almost magical is what it is. The way the U-Boat and other ships re-act to bad weather and storms. The way the sun sets and rises and the storms that are so very realistic. It all amazes me. Completely. SSE.... that's a different story. I can run graphics on SH5 with all high settings on 20-25 and SSE on High. 10-15 and medium is only 15-17. C'mon. Someone needs to work that out. But they are all right all in all. The trees could be a little more realistic and same with the bow splashes. In my opinion SSE had some false promises with the whole water graphic thing. You can see some of that featured in the "Spoof" Youtube trailer and in some interviews at E3.  Graphics for SH5 10/10 - SSE 6/10

2. Bugs: Now here's where we do the big ol' switcharoo here. Now. When SH5 was released it was so filled with bugs it was just terrible. The DRM affected it big time and made long time members of the game completely throw it right in the trash. There is a list of a hundred or more bugs of JUST THE UBOAT, when it was released. A couple very important ones are of these. 1. Propellers won't turn. 2. Torpedo's propellers don't move. 3. Torpedo's that don't have wakes have wakes. 4. Ships collide and blow up out of nowhere. 5. Islands in the map that you hit that aren't listed.... and the list goes on and on. And another big thing is that Ubisoft dropped support for it... for now at least. And there's only been two patches and they have hardly fixed any problems. So now we are all waiting for a third patch which would hopefully be the final one. The bugs for SSE are minor and are some that include just a few minor things. At least I think. Mostly that occur on startup.  Bugs for SH5 2/10 -Bugs for SSE 7/10

3. Community: Now. I know for a fact that the community for SH5 is huge! Probably one of the largest communities our there dedicated to making the game better and better so it is actually worth playing. But where is the community for SSE or SS08? Is there even one? Is there any add-ons besides ones that the creators of the game make? Because I'm not seeing them. And it seems that the community is more just dedicated to this one forum than any other ones. Community for SH5 10/10 - Community for SSE/SS08/SS06/SS 4/10

4. Support: Now here's where we switch things up again. I believe SSE'S support is amazing. The people at Vstep and Paradox would actually think twice before stopping support for a game. Not like the people over at Ubisoft who just drop things because they don't have time for it anymore. So I applaud you for making a game that you will strive to make it better and better until we are all happy with the final result! Congrats Vstep and Paradox! Congrats. Support for SH5 2/10 - Support for SSE 10/10

Now feel free to voice your own opinion! I'm sure we would love to hear it.

How on earth can you compare SSE with SH5? It's a complete different ball game  ???

I'd say both games are good when it comes to graphics, but Silent Hunter 5 runs better with a lot more going on, and the uboat interior is amazing. Maybe Ubisoft created a better graphics engine.

Ubisoft is a large company, and they have a support line, phone is in the manual. I called twice and they were very helpful.

VSTEP have a support forum, but I don't see many people from the company in there. Moderators are doing their best..

Well. They are different based on what you can do but they both are a Ocean going game. Using physics and realistic water and salt water to make the game better. So they may have different purposes but they are somewhat the same.

I have both games and I agree with everything you said. You should post a copy of this on the SH5 forum and see what they say!

What I like in SH-series is the ambience, the sounds and graphics working together to give very good "being there"-feeling.
At this moment in SSE when you put your engine controls to 0 rpm what happens is the 5 sec long looping wave-sound just stops playing. :)

I must say. sh series are great, I have them all.

when u have realistic settings. and sitting there under the ocean and hear the  ping and the engine sound from the destroyer above you and hear the splash. it,s so lovely :)

I realy hope there will be a super mod like gw to sh5.

I started a topic about bow wakes http://80.95.161.114/shipsim/forum/index.php/topic,23109.msg306335/topicseen.html#msg306335, at the time was not aware that there might of been more of them. So I saw that when VSTEP was making the bow wakes, they looked absolutely stunning, foamy, wavey. SO Fred, told me they cut back on detail because of system performace. I think that is what ruined SS08 and now SSE. I mean I get VSTEP is thinking about everyone here but if they keep doing it SS will not stand out. Like SH5 go hard on detail, make a better game engine, put System requierments and quit holding back. It felt dissapointing compareing thoees pics with SSE

SH5? That SH that SANK before leaving harbour and since then abandon to rotten by UBI?

Well there is one bit difference between SH5 and SSE... SH5 is a TITANIC in form of a sub while SSE doesn't have such Titanic.

I think they are wrong about that, I have SH5 Collectors edition with a few mods thanks to the folks from SH5 mod team for all their hard work and efforts, and it looks stunning. SH4 only has the Hollywood Blockbuster detail and that you are with the American Navy. If you played SH5 for about 4 hours like me, you will realize it get's really personal and you can really feel that it's not just a game.

Thats what I was hoping someone would say  :)

But it really does annoy me that theres no demo  >:(
So I might do what people do with other games and get a "trial " version from a certain place on the internet.
Then of course if it runs I will uninstall the "trial "  version and buy it for sure  :2thumbs:

I tried having a look at this superb checker but cant seem to find any SH games in the list ???

Actually, I prefer both SH3 and SH4 over SH5 to be honest. They clearly have had more attention to the underlying detail and I found them a lot more elaborate and interactive.  (all modded too though of course).

SH5 tried to be more flashy and it's nice to walk around the boat a bit more, but that's not 'feeling like more than a game'.  That's just.. well.. 'hollywood magic'.  :P   It's a lot less of a sim than it's older brothers 3 and 4 though.  ::)

And yet also with those, they still got it wrong as far as dynamics go, a lot aswell, in the entire series..  specially when it comes to AI ships.

Part 3 and 4 (I canned 5) are certainly a good warsim, specially with many of the great mods (but that's not credited to the developers themselves but to third party addon/mod creators). But it is so totally different in what it does and how it does it, that you can't compare that with the ship sim series, to be honest.  :-\

Hmm now I'm confused again
SH really atracted me because of its personal story line...
So maybe SH4 might be better, especially on my PC ç(If you can even call it that)  :P

So maybe I might buy SH4 instead but just soup it up with loads of mods  ;)

And your right in a way Fred you can't really compare the two games entirely.
I wouldn't be going out looking for a sub sim if Shipsim already had it!

I had my SH4 CD somewhere around here.So I decided to get it back in and personlaize it again (with over 20 mods). It makes sense, SH4 America VS JAPAN and SH5 Germany vs Everyone else. If you want to personalize it like me go to http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=108964 no registration required, go nuts. You will need a program called JSMGE to get your mods in the game safely. All you gotta do is install it, run it and it will create a folder inside SH4 called MODS in capital letters. So download your mods put the zip file in the folder and run the program and activate each mod.

Recomended if you wanna make it super cool. Download one of the two supermods(mod that contains lot of little mods all togheter). First one is "Rise of the Falling sun http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=955982 or Silent Service http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC-UMJxZPjs. Then just add more mods.

Actually SH5 doesn't really have much in terms of 'theatre of operations' that you can't do with SH3 and SH4  plus mods and addons, and official expansion.

It's not like you NEED it to play the german stuff, etc. That's in sh3 and in the sh4 addon as well.

IMHO the fluid effects and dynamics in SH5 is the best of any game out there... FPS, sims, whatever- i think that they at least got the water right in SH5... and i totally agree with the OP on the rest of the topics..  dead on accurate (to me at least).

 :'(

Go ahead enjoy the DRM chenanigans and yet another UBI incomplete game (it finishes in the middle of the WWII) and UBI has ditched the game because of their own failure (DRM+incomplete game) where not even all the subs and historical detailed were added to it. So from all the SH series SH5 is to be avoided unless you love waste your money on unfinished **** games and love the pain of losing the game because of DRM server issues.

I voted with my wallet not to waste my money on **** but that's my criteria. No doubt that SH5 has stunning graphs but from the SH series is the version that has major issues (beside being discontinued by UBI).

SH4 has the graphs that SH3 lacks... also the mods allow some degree of WWII not in the original pacific but in the atlantic. So for a complete game with good graphs try SH4, if you are a money waster and like junk then go for SH5 with its DRM, good graphs and unfinished... and play it when UBI allows you to play the game!

The main difference between the games are that if vstep decides to give up on ship simulator and go out of business you can still play the game. If UBI shuts down their authentication servers then your SH5 is a coaster. I can't stand to play a game knowing that at any time a publisher can decide to turn it off.
