3D Modeling Software
« on: September 05, 2010, 14:40:59 »

Is it possible for some form of modeling software be release specifically for SSE? I was looking around and couldn't find anything saying 3DS would work or anything similar. It would certainly make the game more popular in my opinion if all the ships people want could be made by other players.

This as been discussed before. To create 3DS models, you might use 3DsMax a very expensive modelling tool. I really don't think that VSTEP is going to release this kind of tool, since is not that easy as you might think.

About people making their own models, they actually can, however they must follow VSTEP requirements, in order for us to have quality ships, acting the most real way the game allows.

It is not the actual modelling which is the problem. A full understanding of the science of ship dynamics, which is an exceptionally complex subject, is also required so as to make the model perform correctly in a seaway. For example, when altering course, the ship must heel a lttle, depending on its speed and the sea state. Making the model actually answer to her helm, engine speed and the other minutiae of her correct behaviour, requires a huge amount of work. It is not like a car, or a train which run on a road or a track. A ship at sea is "alive" and this is NOT easy to replicate. ::)
I feel certain that many folks (not me though!) could make beautiful models, but I do not think the dynamics could be applied to the models correctly.

You can make some real good models with Sketchup. But it hard and taking much time if you want to get a result like a ship model in SSE! ;)

yes an example of game bastardizing would be Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, you got these excelent models that were texured very well, but since the 3D artist did not know anything about Aerospace and Aerodynamics he would just copy them from another aircraft of similar size and proformance and paste it into his aircraft.cfg file and then post it for download, yea it looks like DH3 Otter but it flys and behaves just like the Cessna Grand Caravan, identical aircraft.cfg files as far as serface area, just might increase engine horspower a little.
