Some say releasing the system with a $599 price tag was a mistake. It priced them out of the market and really slowed down the momentum they had built up the PSone and PS2. But then again, I don't think that could have been helped. It was, and still is, a pretty technologically advanced machine. New tech=lots of money.
The removal of backwards compatibility was shocker to me. That's always been one of Sony's best selling points and a real symbol of appreciation to their loyal customer base. To see it removed completely from their system was a slap in the face.
But right now, I'd have to say Sony's slow adoption of online features is probably their largest, and still on-going, mistake. Sony really needs to buckle down and provide an online service comparable to the 360's. And while they're at it, actually adding new and innovative features too. Things that their competition don't have. Instead, they seem focused on removing features instead of implementing new ones. I have my fingers crossed for this year's E3 though. Really hope they have something cool down the pike.
