Lost joystick options
« on: March 21, 2010, 22:46:32 »

I had installed and used SS2008 and successfully configured joystick settings in Options/Controls under the secondary settings. But after applying the patch, I lost the ability to save the settings or even profiles so I have uninstalled and reinstalled the original.
Now I find there is no option for setting secondary controls! But I have merely reinstalled the original and not yet applied the patch!
So what cud be causing the secondary controls column to dissappear!

Many thanks in advance

Hi Nigel,
I need to know what version you installed and what patches or updates you applied.

When re-installing, it is best to completely remove all traces of the old installation. This includes cleaning the registry:
Before you uninstall, run Unregister.exe from your SS installation folder.
You can find it easiest by right-clicking the icon that starts SS and clicking Properties. Then click the  Open File Location button.
Double-click on Unregister.exe; it will run silently and quickly.

After you uninstall SS, delete the ShipSim2008 folder under VSTEP.
Install SS and any updates by following the flowchart that you can find here:

If you still have no secondary control column, please post a screenshot of the controls menu.

Marty (thanks for the quick reply),

The version I have is, from memory, v1.x (but I will confirm the exact later)

After reinstalling I did not apply any patches or extras. So it was as installed originally, when the secondary controls coloumn was visible.

I will go through the full removal as you instructed, tho' I did use the Uninstall option in the SS2008 program menu entry.

Thanks again

Marty,

Sorry for the slow response.
I have checked and it shows v1.00  build 1000

I looked to go thru' your removal instructions, but I could not find Unregister.exe and so could only repeat what I did before and then install it again. But the single column in Controls was still all I could see.

Is there any more advise you can give or info I can supply?

Thanks

Hi Nigel,

If you uninstall SS, you will remove Unregister.exe, so you must unregister before you uninstall.

I have just installed SS 2008 V1.0 build 1001 to confirm my memory that there is no alternate controls column in V1.0. That feature was added in an update.

If you have 1.0 installed now, I suggest that you do the 1.0 to 1.4.2 update.
If you still do not see the alternate controls column, first unregister, then uninstall completely and reinstall to version 1.4.2.
If you have done it correctly, you should have the alternate controls column.

Marty,

Thanks for your quick reply.
Yes of course I realise that I will remove the software, including Unregister.exe, if I uninstall. But the Unregister.exe was not there before I uninstalled.

My recollection is that the second column was there in the first installation. I was able to set-up the joystick and use that setting a number of times. It was after I then applied the update patch 1.0 to 1.4.2 that I found that the settings in the second column and other things were not retained if the program was shutdown and restarted.

However I will reapply the update patch 1.0 to 1.4.2 and report back.

Thanks

Marty,

O.K. it goes from bad to worse!

I pressed on and installed the update again and when it came to entering the licence key it refused it!!
I double checked and even re-entered it but it still refused!
It worked the first time I installed the update and of course each time I have installed the original program afresh from the disc. So I don't know what is going on.

I found Unregister.exe after installing the update, so I ran that and then uninstalled the program.
I reinstalled it again and entered the licence key (accepted this time!) but once again there is no second column in controls!!!

So I am at a loss

Hi Nigel,

If you have V1.0, there will be no column for auxiliary controls. That feature was added in an update.
You need to apply the V1.0 > V1.4.2 update by following the flowchart.

Marty,

Yes, the flow chart just says install the V1.0 > V1.4.2 update. That is what I have described that I have done. When I installed it the first time the lic key was accepted, but it would not remember any settings. I uninstalled and re-installed, applied the update again and it won't now accept the same lic key!

Hi Nigel,

About all I can suggest is that, after installing the original 1.0, you restart your computer, start SS and enter your license key, and confirm that SS runs.

Then, when you do the 1.0 > 1.4.2 update, it should not ask for your license key.
