SS United States for scrap

It was reported in March 2010 that scrapping bids for the ship are being collected.

Norwegian Cruise Lines, in a press release, noted that there are large costs associated with keeping United States afloat in her current state—around $800,000 a year—and that, as the SS United States Conservancy has not been able to tender an offer for the ship, the company was actively seeking a "suitable buyer.

"Realistically, the ship has no commercial value other than as scrap," said Tim Colton, president of Maritime Business Strategies, a Florida-based firm of maritime economists, industrial engineers and transportation consultants.

This means that we have to say goodbye to 'The Big U', the SS United states

If it is, then it's a piece of American history gone to waste.

The United States must not be scrapped but sad that wasn't stopped. Sad to see the twin sister the the American Star be scrapped. History destroyed. Who knows what ship will be next. Hope it ain't another of the famous ships that made marine time famous

Well. Sisters. They look similar during their times. SS United States Picture in first attach, American Star owned by another company when she sailed in second. They are sisters and look alike when they sailed their maiden voyages.

The SS American Star was not scrapped. She ran aground while under tow off the coast of Fuerteventura in 1994..

I didn't say American Star was scrapped. She ran aground indeed in the Canary Islands in 1994, and over the years, her stern collapsed into the water and years later, she completes her roll to port and is now a destroyed wreck on the floor of the shallow water. Some of her bow remains visible on the surface. But back on topic.

Use plastic and it wont get rusty...
Make plastic ships, costs less and floats better...and less dead weight
And you can recycle it too

I am often much better at breaking plastic stuff than stuff made of steel. I think this would apply to ships too.
