Memories
« on: May 01, 2007, 19:14:54 »

Can any of our Dutch friends remember an old passenger liner called (I think) "Johan Van Oldenbarnenveldt". Many years ago, when I was a young third mate, I remember practicing my morse signalling by light. I called up this ship in the Red Sea and was totally stumped when my call "what ship" produced this answer!!!! The Officer on watch on that ship was very patient whilst I struggled to read her name from his reply. Seeing the big modern passenger liners nowadays, took me back a long way. The ship I was on at the time had no radar, no gyro compass and definately no VHF radio, it wasn't even invented in the early 1950s. The memory of that name has stayed with me for 50 odd years!!! ???
