Waves and winds
« on: November 22, 2009, 19:34:16 »

Does anyone know why in Ship Sim, the winds only go to force 8 on the beaufort scale and the sea state no further than about rough - very rough?

Why not allow players to experience hurricane force 12 (say up to 100mph winds) and waves up to 12 - 13 metres?  I'm suprised a 'patch' hasn't been released to allow users to experience that as it would be fun.

Yes!

There are some informations about waves up to 12 metters and smaller in the port....
About wind I don't know yet but i suposed that this will be too....

I think they now aren't doing anithing for SS2008 they are orinetated on the SS Extremes ( 2010 )!

But yes it would be ncie to have expirience like that...

Good bye!

That subject has been covered many times on this forum, if one would take the trouble to look.

Wind does not act directly on ships; it only affects the sea state. The ships would need to have more complex dynamics to react realistically.
What is required is not a simple “patch”, but an entirely new sea model.
Wave height and wind are purposely limited to stay within the range of realism possible with the present model.

There was a hack kinda thing that got Massive waves like this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zqdblonl988

but you cannot do it anymore. I think you need to revert to the original version of SS08 (No-Patches)

please remember that if you should hack the game, you will loose all rights to any Technical Support.

It really isn't worth the effort, anyway. The simulator was not designed to be realistic in anything over force 8 (gale force) winds. Those huge waves look (and are) absolutely ridiculous.

That video demonstrates why it is silly to try for higher waves in the present architecture. The behavior of ships is unrealistic, and the waves under Red Eagle are cartoons of real waves.
Here is one of the more recent rounds of silliness:
