Went back in time (56k warning)
« on: July 23, 2009, 00:38:04 »

So yesterday i had the chance to go back in time (no not really ), while sitting along the hudson river i saw this strage figure looking like a sailboat coming up the river, in the fog it looked like a ghost ship of sorts ::) Then as it got closer i realized it was the Half Moon. Belonging to the explorer, Henry Hudson who discovered the hudson river, and i'm thinking what a find (yes its a new built replica) Take a look :D

Great ship!  :2thumbs: I like those kind of replics of ancient ships. I remember in 2005 the Russian fregatte "Shtandart" visited our city. It was so unusual to see the 18th century ship by own eyes! ;D

Was it under power or just drifting because there are no sails up in those pictures. :-\

Many of them are fitted with auxiliary engines, radars, computers, air conditioning devices, etc, Nick. So in some cases while on board you're still in 21th. ;D

they fitted her with a diesel engine for propulsion, as all sailboats are required now i think... she wasn't going very fast though maybe 5-7 knots :P let me see if i can dig up some info on that boat EDIT: http://www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us/livinghistory.htm (http://www.halfmoon.mus.ny.us/livinghistory.htm) that should provide gsome good info ;)

Would it be a grateful sight to see a replica of the RMS Titanic, RMS Lusitania, HMT Olympic, and HMHS Britannic in the cities they should have arrived at liike Titanic in New York, Britannic in Mudros, Lusitania in Liverpool and Olympic in the port it had it's last voyage. I made a sketchup rendering of Titanic in New York:

I will edit this post with more renders but for Lusitania, Olympic and Britannic.

That looks more like an iceberg, if you know what I mean. :)

i saw the Grand Turk arrive in whitby (UK) with some cloth wrapped around the spars to look like folded sails and it did look odd running under diesel power.

It did take some convincing for one of my friends that it was fitted with diesels ("but surely diesel engines weren't around in 18XXs") (she is blonde...)
