IE8
« on: June 29, 2009, 17:39:43 »

Just updated my desktop (windows xp) IE to IE8 from IE7.
Thinking it's a microsoft product I'd assume it would work.. But it seems otherwise..

I'm connected through my router using WLAN (the same as this laptop) yet IE and FF now shows me the "Internet Explorer cannot display the page"..

What gets me is that I can get onto MSN and chat OK.

Is this a known problem? and is it easy to fix?

Fact of life - Internet Explorer sucks.

You should just stick with Firefox or Google Chrome. Internet Explorer is always demanding updates and is less secure, not worth the hassle. Plus Firefox and Chrome are faster. Try uninstalling it and see if you can get onto Firefox then.

Tools/options/Connections/settings => Automatically detect settings.

But I have to say that I hated IE8 and ended up uninstalling it and returning to IE7, which is just fine. The "bugs" most people find in IE are of their own making, though. I don't have any toolbars, plug-ins etc and have no problems.

IE8 was a complete resource hog (although Chrome is worse and also far more buggy). Firefox is OK but it has some serious bugs that mean I only use it to test sites that I create.

All the rest? Well, if I want to be in a minority, I could use one of them, but why bother? IE7 works OK.

I just use IE7 to be honest. I firmly believe in "If it aint' broke, don't fix it". and it seems that in your case James, that's what's happened

I just stick to what I have, including my MSN. Haven't updated to the new one.

I find IE7 to be fantastic, perfectly fine, no problems for the 4 years I've been using it. I'd never change now, unless I had to.

I use Firefox personally, no add-ons, no toolbars just my important bookmarks and it all runs fine. I need no more, no less.

Terry, why do you think Firefox is not very good? I find it to run perfectly, much better than IE. IE runs so slowly and takes forever to actually 'find' a page :)

That's the real fact IE7 is not technically supported by all websites. EVERY other browser is.
And if you can live with it u are just too stupid to know that websites maybe dont look to you like they should look ;>>
Okay not stupid or maybe little... IE 7 is true piece of ****.

Google Chrome is fastest browser. Opera has meny nice features. Firefox is just nice packet. Every one of them is way better than IEs

That's absolute rubbish. NO Browser is suported by all websites. A few moment's though would tell you that your statement wasn't even close to being correct. No web designer on this planet would waste their time checking that all features on their pages work with all broswers.

You also have cause and effect the wrong way around. Browsers simply interpret the html code. Most of them can handle the css and javascript elements, although they vary in their interpretation. Cutting edge browsers such as the IE range may also interpret things that the HTML standards haven't yet caught up with.

And before anyone starts the usual sanctimonious spouting, Firefox, like all other broswers, is NOT 100% compliant. If it was, they wouldn't need to keep updating it, would they. All browsers have bugs. Like all other software...

Actually, I didn't say that. Like all software, it has bugs. It has some nice features that I wish were in IE. But I have some specific uses for a Browser which it's present set of bugs make difficult for me.

IE works at least as fast as Firefox for me, probably a little faster actually. It doesn't crash, it doesn't hang. So therefore there is no reason for me to not use it.

I keep Firefox for testing my sites and to ensure a good level of compatibility. Between the two browsers, that covers all of the users of my sites, except a tiny minority and there is no financial justification to waste time on those people. If they can't access the site, they'll have to swap browsers. Economics rules!

If I have a problem, I assume that there is a cause, and I go and sort it out. It is always down to something caused by another piece fo software (generally a registry error, but ocassionally a dll problem. Like "questviwer errors" that aren't, the problems laid at IE's doorstep are usually due to something else.

Hi Terry,

Sorry about that, I guess I didn't quite choose the correct words. I had not intended to say you didn't like it, just wondred why you found Firefox to be just 'Ok'.

Just thought I'd clear that up :)

Hi Terry,

Just thought I'd clear that up :)

Just to make it clear:

(1) For me IE works a little faster and consumes about the same memory. It casues me no problems whatsoever.

(2) IE (especially 6 & 7) has the vast majority of the market share, and as I write for the majority, I use IE.

(3) I started with Netscape and resisted changing to IE for many years. That was on the basis that Netscape did everything I wanted. But gradually, it lost ground and no longer did all I needed,

So I switched to IE, which works fine. I'm used to it, so I won't change unless there is some strong reason to do so. (I know Firefox is the grandchild of Netscape)
