Upload speeds
« on: June 30, 2009, 00:18:04 »

Hi, :)

I've recently moved ISP and I just would like your comments on the upload speed that I was "Set to" by SKY.

We have the 8MB broadband package, Download speed is 8MB but upload speed is 0.4MB.

The other day I tried to upload a video that I just finished and it estimated to complete uploading after 11 hours - it didn't take 11 hours - it only took a couple of hours to get a error message to tell me that the upload failed..
Then I started to think - my old ISP wasn't this slow..

Is it me demanding too much upload speed or is it them giving out too little upload speed?
I went onto Speed Test (http://www.speedtest.net/) and the upload speed was well below ISP average.

What is your upload speed?

Here are mine in norway

and here from a server in London
(http://www.speedtest.net)
and from norway to LA. Cal. USA
(http://www.speedtest.net)
So you see the speed will be poor as longer away you go

Unless you have a cable connection (and even then only some cable connections), your upload speed will be a lot slower than your download speed. That's what the "A" in ADSL means - "asynchronous" - meaning different.

With a business 8 MB BT connection, my upload speed is just below 1Meg. (0.95 last time I looked).

But Sky do seem appalingly bad. That's why they're cheap, I guess. You'll probably find that their support is not very supportive, either. Everyone I know who has tried to get support has been very disappointed with the low quality service that Sky provide.

Mr Murdoch wants every penny he can squeeze out of you, of course, so all corners will be cut...

My download speed is a bit low, but we are in the middle of the overnight server synchronisations so there is probably a lot of data being moved on the network.

HI Captain Darling
yea i see the line are not so good, but your ISP are they promise you the speed hole time or it say up to that are the usual in Norway my ISP promise me up to 28 MB i have a cable broadband BDW and a upload 2.8 MB, so here in Norway they usual give you 10%  download for upload but can bay more upload speed if needed.

I think britain are lacking in high speed broadband. All these ISP's are talking about Fibreoptic connections, with gigabit speeds but I'm still waiting for a bloody 8mb connection, let alone anything quicker!!

Well here in Norway and the city i live in there are a ISP that have Fibreoptic connections with a speed up to 4 GB but do wee need that, they give you Internet, TV, radio, rent a video, games  or many other things.
Maybe UK are a outsider with the Internet speed, why not protest if it are so bad.

Protest? Ha!

That won't get us anywhere, apart from perhaps a night in a cell  ::)

With the recession you'd find BT (british telecom)would be very reluctant to make noticeable improvements to the network...

Having seen what everyone else is getting, I'm very pleased with my BT connections (above). I have three locations over a 12 mile circle, and all of them give very similar results.

The one here at world's end (Selsey) actually is the best by about 2%. But we're only 0.5 mile (1Km) from the exchange.

To me, the speed dosen't really matter, it dosen't seem to make a difference for what I use the internet for anyway

Ship Sim MP isn't a problem either (Most of the time..).
