How not to berth a ferry
« on: April 30, 2009, 12:22:05 »

Was sent this through a fgew days ago over on Ferries of Northern Europe, thought it might be of interest.

Certainly not the best way to berth, I think...

I was thinking the same thing as you Mike! Good job its omething old and strong like that, most modern day ferries would probably disintigrate!

I've been on that ferry! A while ago, though.

That could have been much more serious. If you look, not one person seemed to be standing after that collision (look on the upper decks beforehand and there are lots of people there. Afterwards, not one).

If anyone had gone over the railings, they could have been crushed or drowned or could have hit the jetty and been a bag of blood. Potentially VERY serious!  :o ???

Likely a sudden gust of wind blew her off her line at the worst possible time. Something Gills Bay is notorious for.

Ships watertight integrity was not compromised by that gash which was well above the waterline and for'ard of the watertight seal which on that ship is built into the back of the visor.

I should also add the fact that if you look at the footage at the end, showing her backing into SMH, if you look at the way the crew are moving ( rushing ) about, like an old silent movie, you will realise the film was speeded up at that point.
