OH I have one you must try to. It's called Spy bot-Search and Destroy, and it is effective of in these kind of situations ;), just do a search through once a week and it will take care of any unwanted relatives.

Here it is: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Try to avoid 'Unknown' free anti-virus programs  e.t.c as they could be a virus themselves ;)

Because i once got one and it was a virus itself.. luckiy i got rid of it before it started any damage..

Spybot Search and Destroy is an excellent pogram. We use it on all our PCs. It is very widely used.

Like all anti-spyware programs it doesn't catch them all, but I find that if we use it along with Adaware, they seem to catch everything.

Ive always wondered why some j*$% a@@es try to ruin the Internet for everyone. I hate haveing to be careful with what I download. All I know is I keep my anti-virus software on 24-7 and update it as much as possiable. ;) The last thing I want to do is fight with a virus :-X

Pulling off all of their soft dangly bits and them deep-frying them is too good. Feed them Marmite sandwiches, I say!

Then execute them.

Most of these people Nathan, are just sad sorry individuals with nothing better to do than try to ruin others PC's ::)

A few years ago, this was limited to a small number of "spotty" individuals hiding away in their bedrooms, but it is more widespread now.  Very annoying really >:(

A simple example of a virus is a small BASIC (Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) program that instructs the screen to fill with 'a particular word/phrase', easy to do, but quite annoying for the many shop owners that suffered this problem in the 1980's ::)

That type of thing couldn't do any damage though, just a looping effect on the computer it was written on ;)

Unfortunately the real problem is that organised crime is now involved. Your details, along with possibly millions of others will possibly have gone into a larger database somewhere. With enough snippetts of information, it might be possible to do lots of financial damage.

I assume you've changed your bank login details. Perhaps also arranged to transfer to a new account? Changed your forum login name and passwords? (and for any other places that you have logins).

The fact that nothing has happened yet doen't mean you should think that all is well. Better safe than sorry.

I know this sounds paranoid, but maybe you should be that way as well, as you know that data may have been taken from you.

Reasons for people makeing viruses.
1 they have nothing better to do with there life.
2 they like causing problems for people
3 make themselfs feel better by doing damage.

Sadly they aren't spotty little individuals with nothing to but hide away in their bedrooms making life difficult for others. They are pretty clever, dangerous little excrementheads. Far more of a problem than just annoying.

These people can literally take over your life if you are stupid enough to keep certain sensitive data on your computer.

BTW BASIC as Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code is an anti-acronym (someone remind me of the proper word?) and the word basic pre-dates that by many years.

It is.

They've caught a few virus writers and given them jail sentences. Not enough, though.

I think the Law nowerdays is absolutely useless, i mean there have been several murders etc. and some people have been given short sentences and then they have been released early! anyway back on topic, i think the law should crack down on virus writers, it seems there are so many floating around the system now that its impossable to punish the virus writers.

Well, here's a bit of pessimism for you all, and something that may make you think ;)

How do we know that these evil little programs aren't actually being written by the companies who produce the internet security packages.........hmm.........

Think about that one, next time you're asked to buy the latest version of their software ;)

The thing that bugs me is, that some of the imprisoned virus writers I mentioned above were offered jobs in the Antivirus companies as soon as they got out of prison. Officially they were taken on to provide expert knowledge on how to detect viruses.

But if I was a conspiracy theory freak, I'd be highly suspicious. Hmmm... perhaps I am such a person.

at the end of the day what it comes down to is money, if they think they can earn themselves a lot of money by producing a fatastic security package they will do whatever it takes to do that, even if it means giving jobs to people that have programmed viruses, a sneaky idea but a good one as far as earning money is concerned.

its always good to be slightly suspicious about everything ;) hehe

Sorry to open such an old topic... But I was wondering if there are any statistics relating to how many people get virus or similar. I must admit that I've not always been as careful with firewalls and checkers as I should. But I am careful on visiting dodgy sites.

With this conspiracy theory, is it likely that people will really suffer lengthy prison sentences as part of the scam? Methinks not (although this is not a guarantee).

I do think, however, that when you install a checker it tells you that you have XYZ infections that this is *&&&. I know because I tried it on a freshly installed Windows and MS Office and I do not accept these contained Viruses (or viri? Someone correct my spelling, pls)

Good luck!

Avast gave me nothing but trouble... >:(
