Alright, Alright, Video Makers...
« on: January 31, 2009, 07:53:49 »

How many of you, that have YouTube accounts, get copyright claims from WMG (Warner Music Group) and had your video removed? I am sick of it. It happens to people 24/7. Most of you know that I made Thomas the Tank Engine stuff. Well, one of my videos was removed, because of WMG, which isn't allowed because after reseaching, Thomas The Tank Engine and WMG, are not associated. This has gone too far. All of you who had similar problems, we should boycott WMG. They already lost 4 billion dollars in ten years when they started their stupid copyright claims. Now it's getting worse.

How many of you think that us video makers have had enough of that? People still have videos up with the same music.

This happened to me with my ShipSim Video.

What annoyed me was, that I was not claiming it as my own or selling it in any way, it was just sitting there for pleasure, and to hopefully give pleasure.

Thats what I think is so horrible about these copyright claims, the music isn't offending anyone...

What I don't understand is,

All these copyright's are around, and they are removing people's Ship Simulator video's, yet say, there are music video's of Leona Lewis all over the show? Proper music video's that don't get removed, surely, that is illegal?

I agree, to an extent, that copyright is good, but I do think they are going over the top nowerdays with it, although, some may view it as copyright must be strict.

Never had a run in myself, since I only post accordion video's, Recently youtube seem to have been clamping down alright, noticed that myself, to be honest

I've noticed a new function on youtube, if the audio is copyrighted material of lets say Leona Lewis, the audio will be disabled and a copyright notice will be displayed with the company that pursued the copyright to Youtube.
So this removes the audio, but the video is still there..

It's the copyright owner's decision as to whether or not they will allow someone else to use their property. They can be as abitrary as they like.

Funnily enough, on my "Terry in the Solent" videos, I got a demand from the agents of the copyright owner to remove the "Terry Dactyl" music from the end of the last video. But then I pointed out that I am Terry Dactyl, and that I own the copyright and they they work for me.

Lots of "ooops, sorry!" and red faces on that occasion.

But it shows that even in the case of 40 year old recordings, there are people very determined to protect their copyrights.

Hi Jack.

Yep, wrote it, played it, sung it and danced it on Top of The Pops, complete with fake beard (I was quite young at that time). It was originally hoped that Mungo Jerry would do it, but they had just completed recording some other stuff at about that time, so we "sessioned" it. Everything was sessioned, as I was tied to a particular recording contract that meant I couldn't use my own name without breaking the contract. (Like Eric Clapton with Derek and the Dominoes)

We got in a session drummer since I didn't have a set I could transport to the studios.  After spending an hour or so lugging in a complete set of drums, he actually ended up just playing a rhythm pole while we stamped our feet.

Last year I was working with an old friend of mine (actually we were drinking Port in our hotel bar in Miami) and we found that his cousin is married to my cousin. We've only known each other for 25 years without being aware of that. We carried on chatting and got onto our teenage years. Guess what, he was that drummer!

It turns out that he and I worked together at a number of locations. Small world! Since then, we've also found out that two of our mutual Clients also worked with us at various stages...

It's a warm day,
the sun is shining
Someone said
"let's go to Brighton"
So we all jumped  on board our friends car.
Hold on tight, 'cos we're doing 90 miles per hour.

Hi Captain Bluebeard.

No you can't.  :police:

You absolutely must have the copyright owner's written permission in advance. Anything less is breach of copyright. What you've suggested is not legal. I know lots of people think that's the way to do it, but it isn't.

Allan Jackson has given you his permission and that's OK, but no-one else can do it without his agreement. And they certainly can't just take someone's work and use it with a credit line or a link.

yea i've hit alot of videos that are blocked, i just use youtubes music changer and they're back on, actually had a copyright issue this morning, but i was lucky they still are allowing it to play. Trains you can't boycott anyone because they keep causing you copyright issues, you're guilty of using something of theirs without permission. What i've done to the remainder of my videos is i've put copright to (insert music writer) and so on and i think thats what saved me from my latest video. The majority of us are guilty to using copyrighted music. Something we have to think i about, thats why i use www.freeplaymusic.com  (http://www.freeplaymusic.com) and theres no copyright issues there. :)

Music copyright is very precise. You can't use it in any way without formal, prior, written permission. You're not even allowed to quote words from songs.

Books and other writen works have slightly different rules. You can quote very small texts, within the rules of an internationally agreed formula (only a small percentage is permissible). And even then, only for a specific set of purposes. Simply taking someone else's work, sticking it on your web page and saying (c) Terry Russell is not legally acceptable.

Well the problem with Warner Music Group is that there is no way to contact them for permission. So they are removing videos people can't ask to use its audio at all.

And another thing. They had an agreement with YouTube that we could use their music, and last month, they turned into little babies and cancelled it. You do not know how many people this angered. Look up "WMG Sucks" (sorry but that's what I search) and there will be tons of negative videos towards them. I will have one up soon.

Another tihng about how stupid Warner is. They made it illegal to sell Batman: The Dark Night in Japan. Think of how many people that angered.

They may be stupid (or they may not), but it's entirely their decision to make. No-one else has any say in the matter. The copyright owner can be as abitrary as they like.

If you disagree strongly enough, all you have to do is contact them and buy the copyright from them. Talking money always interests them.

Many years ago, I sold a set of my works to Dick James Music Publishing. They eventually sold them to Michael Jackson's music publishers. And then MPS bought the rights.

A couple of years ago, I made them an offer and bought them back (for much less than I sold them for!). After some wheeler-dealing, they get used as muzak in some of the adverts on TV and I get a payment for each usage. Over a year it mounts up to a tidy sum.

Result!  ;D

I think Colgate (notorious in the YouTube Poop (HYSTERICAL videos) community for removing all videos with Dr. Rabbit in them) may have given them the idea after they lost their battle ;D
