Ship Sim Professional 2008
« on: November 26, 2008, 23:52:51 »

Going by the screen shots and the vid's this looks fantasic.... the new wave system looks really cool...
Please correct me if I'm wrong but SS Pro isn't "geared up" for the standard home user.....???? meaning it's used for proper training with external ship controls etc ????

Hi shipmatejon,

Indeed you are correct, this product is meant for professional use. It can be use for educational purposes or perhaps companies can use it in demonstrations, those kind of things.

You CAN use it at home, without any of the 'secondary software or equipment', but that's not really what it's intended for.

But no doubt some of the results from this endeavour will benefit our game version too.  :)

Regards,
Fred

Hi Jon,

Ship Simulator 2008 Pro is made for professional training use with external controls, displays, chart plotters, etc. It will also run like SS 2008 in “Sunday Sailor” mode on the same—higher end—systems that run non-pro. In beta testing on the same Vista machine that I use for testing non-pro, I see only a slight performance hit when running the same missions.

The only things it offers for non-pro use are the vastly improved sea model, and the Frigate. It also includes the Ship Dynamics Editor, which is not that easy to use unless you understand the principles behind it. For instance, there is no “Max Speed” or “ROT” slider. Those are calculated underway by the physics routine from more basic values such as hull resistance / speed curves.

With luck, the useful features will trickle down into SS 2010.

Even with that knowledge, I doubt you'll find anyone who would say it was easy to use...

Now Terry, we have seen clowns who will say anything is easy, as long as they want it and don’t understand it.

I have just removed a post from a member that I considered might start more arguments.

Gentlemen, I will do that without warning if I see any more sniping.

I will also go and lean on that "ban" button.

Be warned. I have no patience in these matters.
