Flushing The Hemisphere
« on: September 01, 2008, 04:04:00 »

Scientists have akways known that hurricans such as Gustav rotate one way in the norther hemisphere and another way in the other.  For years after they have always thought that the same is true for other things such as Toilets sinks and squirting mustard bottles.  But now they are doubting the case for toilets.  I was hoping that some one here in the southern hemisphere could flush their toilet and take matters into there own hands. ;D

Cyclones and gyres are large scale objects that are influenced by the Coriolis force. Toilets and washbasins are small-scale. The direction of the vortex rotation is more influenced by the circulation induced by filling or other disturbance. If you filled a basin, let it stand until all disturbances died out, and carefully pulled the plug, you might detect the effect of Coriolis acceleration statistically.

I saw a nice demonstration of that on "Long way down"..Charlie Boorman and Ewan McGregor were standing on the equator-line in Africa, and a local let a bowl of water drain on both sides of the line..On one side the water turned clockwise, on the other counter-clockwise..Very amusing.. :)
