Title: Ship Control Unit
Post by: wjjay on May 02, 2007, 02:48:30
I have been gone for several months, actually about a year. But remember that a ship control unit was supposed to come out. Whatever happened to that. Was it released? If so where can i find it and does anyone know how well it works?

I don't know whether this is the one you were talking about but there is one here:

Yes sir that must be it. Kind of expensive, but I would actually consider it if it works right and would be compatible to shipsim08. Has anyone tried this yet? Does anyone have any info on how well it works.
Thanks

This one is history! And it never comes into the stores, as I know. It was too expensive and not suitable for the advanced game we are waiting for with the 2008 version.

Wilco i think was creating it and if I hard correctly  Vstep pulled the plug because they were takeing to long.

Oh well it was a good idea. Maybe something will come out in the future.

That and the product was not going to be functional if additional features were added to the game and the quality was not that good - so I was told.

About that raildriver unit: ETA September 2007 (about the same as the release date of shipsim 2008). Costs will probably be $200+ All of this is still uncertain, but that's what we at VStep heard.

I think the one Wilcopub are selling is ok but the other one doesn't go to my liking. :)

i agree the one wilco is making is much better than the raildriver one. KM

I think both may have advantages. Okay, the raildriver looks pretty cheaply, but with some stickers on top, it would provide a more realistic engine control as Wilcos did. And lots of switches could be used for several new features, like anchoring, sliping towing rope and much more. In my opinion, the raildriver has a lot of potential for further, tailormade improvements. Well, until than it will have the same price as Wilco   :'(

Cheers

A simple control unit with dual throttle, rudder and bow/stern truster joysticks would be enough for me.
There are allready enough buttons on your keyboard for the anchoring, slipping towing rope, ... ::)

I just use the logitech g25 steering wheel. Use the wheel for steering and the gearstick for throttle :P

Greetings,
Yes,but what when the game will be more extended, with lights, anchordrop and al these extra's.
O.K. this all will take al lot of time, and is not for the nearest future, but it's just a question.
Regards
Marc
P.S.my vision,on the game is also to run my computer, like a real vessel.multisceen, and al kinds of buttons, for some handling.

The good thing about the g25 is that it has lots of buttons aswell. Also it has a 4-way directional pad.

I have just been experimenting with some (analog)potmeters on to the gameport of your computer.

And it works!!!!

If you just take 4 100K potmeters and you put them on the right pins of your gameport, you can use those as a 4 axis controller.

Only, I had a problem with the calibration, but that probably was beceaus I used 50K potmeters.

Pictures will come.(If you are interrested)

This is very cool.  There is still the problem, however, that ShipSim does not (so far as I can find out) have any provision for separate control of two throttles by joystick, or any way except by mouse.

I have a dual joystick (Logitech USB) and the right stick is useless here.

Anyone else have any light to shed on this?

Cheers,
Michael

For many years the flight sim community has been using keyboard controllers to make functional cockpits. Just open a keyboard and attach your momentary switch wires to the key inputs. Using this, multi-monitor and a wheel, a comfortable pilothouse could be made.
One thing I would like to see would be the ability to remove the software wheel. The same as removing the yoke in many flight sim planes while using a hardware yoke.
Independent throttles should be put high on the update list ;)

Maybe they can develop a good game controller?

I do not see this being within their interest. However, I could be wrong.

I think we would appreciate anyone doing it! I think Saitek would be a good option for this.

I agree, Saitek do a great controller called the X52 (some of my friends have this controller for some other games).

I have been thinking about investing in two of those and try to merging them to be one control system for SS

WOW, sounds like it would be a great setup ;D

I've kinda avoided buying the X52 for the time being, waiting for the price to fall ;)

I have the X-45, and in the near future i will have the X-52. Very nice stuff, works great.
It would work nice for the container-crane in SS08 as well.

Has anybody figured out a way to control twin throttles separately any way but directly with the mouse?

Not as of yet. I know someone who is working on trying to find a way to make it happen via joystick and throttle combos, but that is about it. I heard it is something being looked into for the future, though.

Thanks Luc,

I downloaded the demo and will try it.  I know I can program my joystick to produce key combinations, so maybe .. .

I'll post the result.

If anyone wants to try something completely different, I use Voice Buddy (I haven't programmed it for SS yet).  It allows you to control key combinations (or single keystrokes) with your voice ;D

If anyone is interested, it's available here (https://edimensional.com/index.php?cPath=23) (secure site).

I have had great fun using this with FSX and other games, however it doesn't allow you to program mouse commands.........yet ;)

Seperate throttle is possible with the Saitek Aviator AV8R (retail price about € 35,= at for example http://www.alternate.nl/html/productDetails.html?artno=NJZS76). It works well for ss only problem is the zero throttle position. These levers going very light on tough. Made for fs so the throttle position is from 0 to 1 but it would be nice if it could modified to -1 through 0 with a feelable 0 marking to +1.
I have bought the Saitek X52 before this Aviator AV8R and there it was also possible to use seperate throttle. Port side with the throttle and starboard with the joystick. In my opinion the Aviator AV8R is more easy to use and compared to the price it is perfect for ss. I can do almost all functions with the switches of this joysick with the various ships.

See my other posts for my custom USB controller designed for ShipSim. It provides independant throttles and thrusters as well as buttons to control all functions ( eg chart zoom, point of view, tie up, etc). No need for keyboard or mouse at all.

I have been using a Saitek flightsim joystick on the ship sim. Engine forward/reverse and left and right with the stick. The had switch zooms and pans. But it does get a little frustrating not being able to split the engine controls. I saw on the saitek web site they offer a joystick (AV8R) with dual engine controls. Does anyone know if this model would work for independent engine controls on the Shipsim? I think that if some one could at the least come up with a simple unit that would at least control the Steering and engines would be great and I wouldn't mind doing the rest with the keyboard.

See my reply #38. Yes, with ss2006 you have separate throttles with the AV8R (Aviator) joystick. I don't have the ss2008 yet so I don't know if it works with ss2008.
