Perhaps you have Precision Steering off, try pressing F12.. ;)

Hi Anthony,
Are you using the mouse and the onscreen controls, or are you using the arrow keys(up, down)? If you are doing the latter, then to make the Speed control stay in place you must hold the "Shift" key as you move the lever. otherwise the lever will snap back to idle immediately. I cannot understand why you are having this happen after "A minute or two".
I have tried to replicate your problem but find it is not possible for me to bring about, so I am totally baffled. ???

Yes, turn it on with F12.. Precision Steering off is sometimes useful with fast boats, such as speedboats..
F12 is a toggle switch, press it once: PS is on, press it again: PS is off.. :)
If you mostly want your ships on PS, tick this box. (F12 will still be able to switch).

Apologies for posting in an old thread, but I just wanted to say thank you for this tip (precision steering), and also confirm what Anthony said, which is that F12 does indeed take screenshots, whilst also activating PS.
EDIT: Discovered 'F12' is the default screenshot button in Steam. Unbelievable no one posted that before me, especially as I haven't played games on a PC since 2009. :/
