Title: U.S. Coast Guard skin enhancement requested
Post by: scarletguard on January 24, 2013, 23:21:27
Have anyone ever considered making the U.S. Coast Guard vessel as seen in most recentt version of Ship Simulator Extremes use the correct USCG logos?

Because this is not the way it should look. . .

The racing stripes are wrong and that isn't the real USCG logo being used.

The vessel called the "Cutter" is actually a High Endurance Cutter.

Here's the stripes and logo as they appear in reality:

The vessel called "Protector" in the game is a 87 foot "Marine Protector Class patrol boat" and looks like this in reality . . .

The correct font for the ship names, hull numbers, and text on the ship of the ships should be "Univers LT 73 BlackExtended"

As larsdehaan says, Vstep can not just use the U.S. Coastguard logos without the permission being granted. The Protector is actually called "Cod", which is a subtle reference to the fact that in the real world most of this class of vessel are named after fishes. The Cutter is in fact based on the Hamilton Class High Endurance vessel as you so rightly say.
The general idea is that, in the game, the two vessels are realistically shown but without the correct Colours schemes so as not to upset the American Navy, of which the Coastguard is a branch.

Regards,
Angus.

Wow, You better check your facts.  The U.S. Coast Guard is not a branch of the U.S. Navy and never has been since 1790.  The Coast Guard did associate itself with the Navy in WWII for consistency and operations.  The Coast Guard often conducts operations with the Navy but is a completely independent military service.  Coast Guard units operated with and at times under Navy control during the Viet Nam war.

The Coast Guard (Originally called the U.S. Revenue Cutter service) was formed and operated under the U.S. Treasury department from 1790 until the mid 1960's.  It then moved to the Department of Transporation.  Shortly after the attack of 9/11 by terrorists on the U.S. the Coast Guard moved to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security where it has served since then.

When SSE first came out I personally worked with VSTEP and the Coast Guard legal affairs department to try to get permission from the Coast Guard to use the correct logo.  The Coast Guard refused because the logo is not in the public domain and cannot be used for personal or corporate profit.  The subject was dropped at that time.

Hi John,
Please accept my profound apologies, being only a merchant seafarer and British to boot, ::) I was basing my remarks on ancient knowledge, which was obviously incorrect anyway. Your post has cleared up the matter in a way which is beyond dispute, for which I thank you.

Kind regards,
Angus.

Hi Angus

No apology necessary, it is a common misconception (even here in the U.S.) that we are part of the Navy.  Any Coastie will take exception quickly LOL.

I used to be very active with SSE when it came out but I have found so many flaws in it that it just seemed to be very unrealistic to me.  In addition VSTEP really does not seem to want to update it and take care of customers any more.

I have wide experience in ship and small boat handling.  I was assigned to four major cutters, a polar icebreaker, two large patrol boats and a small icebreaker during my career and was a underway ship handler.  SSE just never made it with me.   It really is a pity in that SSE has such great potential.

Greetings! Sorry for being so late to the party, but I'll try and make a proper USCGC skin for the cutter, and as a bonus, for the Protector-class patrol boat as well! I too was a bit irked by the faux "Coast Guard" skins.

Now, all I need is some help hosting them online. Anybody know a good site to host them at?

I'll also try to make a proper USCG Maritime Protector-class patrol boat skin as well. Anyway, I hope you all like them. I'll try to make them as realistically as I possibly can. Since the ship textures are stored as .DDS files, it should be fairly easy to modify them.

I think that's all the coast guard vessels covered. If anybody knows of any that I've missed, please let me know and I'll do those as well.

Cheers guys! :)

EDIT: I'm all done! Protector and Cutter are both finished! Anybody know of a good file hosting site?

Question: Apparently a certain thread from a few years back says that it is not okay to retexture the ships. Yet, there is a forum section devoted to new textures. Is this ban still in effect? If so, my sincerest apologies.
