very sad what happened in Italy 12 people died so far and 20 are still missing (i think that they are also gone :'( 8 days in a huge air bubble without fresh air and water or food )
but here in the Netherlands did beached a ship (the Aztec Maiden) yesterday at Wijk aan Zee (near Amsterdam) but it is floating again (today at 17:00 hour the tugs and coast guard have towed here away from the beach)

the tanker Athiri was leaving the anchor area at Goedereede to Rotterdam around 21:00 hour short after depart the captain had to make a difficult manouvre and hit the tanker Sloman themis that was laying at anchorthe chain from the Sloman themis brokeand both ship that were loaded with dangerous substances had damage above the waterline no load was leaking short after the crash the captain from the Athiri made an another dangerous maneuvre and sailed very close to an another tanker that was also laying at anchor.

The salvage team expects to have one chance of removing the ship as planned, because she is slowly being crushed by her own weight..

I remember once when there was an issue with the island wanting to postpone the lift to avoid any interference in the tourist industry. I remember them saying that it should be postponed to at least january 2014. I feel happy that the island can take a rightful decision and have the ship removed as soon as possible. Maybe a month of no tourism but once the ship has been removed, it has been removed!
However, i know for sure CC wouldn't look the same after sitting on the seabed for over a year.

I remember readings something about South Korea wanting the ship as nobody else wanted it. Now it's so rusty and bad it's not even up to North Korea standard! :doh:
On a serious note its worrying that they don't think it could survive the lift and they only have one shot at it.

New update from yesterday.
The operation to right the ship Costa Concordia (known as “parbucklingâ€) has been given the go-ahead for this month: this was the outcome of a meeting convened in Rometoday at the headquarters of the Civil Protection Department, by the Emergency Commissioner Franco Gabrielli, and attended by representatives from the Advisory Committee, the Observatory, the Micoperi-Titan Consortium and the cruise line Costa Crociere.
Final authorization to proceed with the operation to rotate the wreck is subject to submission of all the test certificates following inspection of all the finished structures and tocompletion of the preliminary activities required before the actual parbuckling can begin. All of this should take place by the end of next week; at any time thereafter, as soon as the sea and weather conditions are favorable, the operation torotate the wreck into an upright position can begin.
The parties present at the Rome meeting all contributed to the discussions – within their respective areas of expertise – providing guidelines and instructions that the contracted firms will be obliged to abide by during the parbuckling andwhich were added to the final document drafted subsequently.
The decision taken at today’s meeting is the result ofcontinuous work – with a constant exchange of information and documents – between the companies contracted to remove the wreck (world leaders in marine salvage and naval engineering) and the Emergency Commissioner’s Office, particularly its Monitoring Observatory. Over the months, in fact, the potential risks associated with theparbuckling were assessed and specific precautionary measures were taken accordingly. In this regard, a comparison was made between the risk of leaving the ship upright throughout the winter, exposed to adverse sea and weather conditions, or else leaving the wreck in its currenttilted position for the same period of time; the conclusionreached was that the former option is preferable to the latter – another winter left lying at an unnatural angle would possibly have comprised the parbuckling operation if this had been delayed until next spring. The meeting also agreed on a weighty document dealing with management of the water inside the hull; indeed, since the start of August,preliminary work has been proceeding involving the“remediation†of the liquid material and its removal from some accessible parts of the ship.
As has been the case all along, arrangements were also made to inform the population of Giglio about the latest developments; to this end, next week a meeting is scheduled on the island with the Prefect Mr. Gabrielli, the Mayor of Giglio, the Chairman of the Monitoring Observatory and representatives from the Micoperi-Titan Consortium and Costa Crociere.
A few days after this, a press conference will be held to announce to the media the likely date of commencement of the operation – this is still uncertain at the moment – as well as to explain the associated details and provide logistical instructions so that reporters can cover the story properly without hindering the parbuckling or the work of the Civil Protection Department, which is actively engaged at Isola del Giglio.

The man in the video says that gravity takes over at that point. A little more ballast water will be poured into the sponsons for a gentle up-righting on the underwater support.

She's making great progress. Huge well done to everyone working with her. I wouldn't want to have to search her for bodies when she's up. Hope she doesn't fall apart!!!!

They look like they're running behind schedule though, I think it started at 9:30 GMT and it was supposed to take 12 hours but is still on going. Slow but steady I suppose. :)

Once they get her floating, the next question is how to move the Costa Concordia.
Towing her seems pretty risky.
The new ship "Dockwise Vanguard" would be a better alternative.. :)

wished she gained less damage than those two punctured sections near the bow and aft. its like there is not balcony anymore, its completely been crushed under the thousands of tonnes of weight

They did say after the police have completed their search there needs to be major repairs done, including a wash in my opinion, just because there is algae on the ship doesn't mean a 20 month wreck will fall apart straight away after some cleaning up.

2 people of 4,200 who was onboard are a few....they could be more...Maybe the killed people had fallen in the water, then they couldn't swim and then they were drowned....Anyway it's so pity to go holidays or to work on a ship and then die... :(

Just what i said before, once the police complete their work, the repairs will be underway, remember there are some "hard to reach" areas within the ship even if its upright, remember that still around 50-60% is underwater, they could be anywhere, its unlikely that the Sea swept them away, especially when the areas around that were carefully searched, bodies don't sink down that quickly in calm seas.

I have seen a lot documentaries about Costa Concordia's accident and i can understand clearly that that night was terrific for all the passengers, so those 32 people maybe was panicked and tryed to keep themselves safe. But if you can't see anything and you are swinming in darkness some time either you get tired and then you're at the mercy of the waves or you die from hypothermia....I think i'm correct, aren't I?

Italian media have reported that Carnival Cruises have given the job of removing the Costa Concordia to Dockwise.
The Dockwise Vanguard will carry the Costa Concordia away from Giglio in the first half of next year..

The biggest salvage operation of its kind, yes they are probably already there capturing most of the action.
Although i do think the CC needs to be towed a bit of coast, you don't want the Dockwise crashing into the docks either whilst "sinking"

I have just read that divers identified "human remains" in the ship, which have been sent for DNA testing. After the discovery, Italian media said that the families of both people have informed...

This ship sank in January 2012 and it took over two years, i would have personally made a floating wreck out of it as a tourist destination, however, as there has been fatalities involved i would be happy if they can remove it as soon as possible ;)

It's become very unlikely the Dockwise Vanguard will be used to transport the Costa Concordia from Giglio next July.
This is due to environmental hazards, and to keep the job of scraping her in Italy.
Instead she will probably be refloated and towed to an Italian port like Genua.

Yes, I was going to ask the same question as according to AIS it is currently off the coast of South Africa heading towards the Firth of Forth in Scotland! :D

Around midday, at the time of the refloating, I was watching the live-stream, and heard distant church bells playing Ave Maria..That was a nice moment. I'm sure the island inhabitants are fed up with the wreck by now, and will be relieved to see her go.. :)

Of course, but I believe that Giglio was just a little Italian island before the crash...On the other hand, after the crash the whole world learnt about it and thousands of people went there to see Costa Concordia, so I don't think that they didn't have any benefit from the wreckage....Just an opinion :)
