Title: Help with Azimuth Control Levers
Post by: 182 on October 12, 2011, 20:05:58
Hi I have acquired three actual Azimuth control units and wish to connect them to my computer via USB for use in SSE. Could anyone help with pointing me to the equipment required to achieve this, of course if its possible?

thanks in advance to all you tech men out there...oh and ladies!

Do you mean they are USB already or you wish to convert them to USB?

You've got your hands on some actual DP controllers?  :o
Theres a tutorial lying around on this forum telling you how to make a controller for SS08 from scratch, so i'll do some digging and get back to you

Hi Danny,

Yeh three azimuth controllers I think Lilaas of Norway made them, they have three wires coming from the unit itself so i think i may have to connect these to a board of some sort

Ohh yes that topic, Try having a look Here (http://80.95.161.114/shipsim/forum/index.php/topic,4503.0.html). Looks like it may be a similar job but don't hold me to it!

If you do decide to try then I wish you good luck
If successful you need to produce a tutorial aswell  ;)

Have you checked this?

Quote
Step 1: make sure the controller is actually a potentiometer
We can test this by examining the controller, it is quite easy on this controller, because on the 2 sides we see 2 potentiometers. Its easy to see here that there's potentiometers in this controller. You can see the 3 wires attached to them:

Not an expert but they look like ´M´ type transmitters to me (a type of synchro transmitter that runs of 24V DC) so by the time you get the appropriate A to D converters it may be cheaper (and more compact) to buy an of-the-shelf unit. But, as I said im no expert and could well be wrong.
