Title: Recommended Video Cards
Post by: AriesDW on May 09, 2007, 22:44:59
What is the video card that is delivering clear, fluid response for Ship Simulator gameplay?

A. I am looking to get a new card.

B. I am sure others are, too.

Here is a tip:
Don't buy the Sapphire geforce 7900 GS 256mb! I have that card, and sometimes there are just parts of ships missing!
This is a problem with the software of the graphic cards, beceaus it allso is in other games.

But, I think all other 7900GS cards will do.

But, wich connections do you have on your motherboard?
PCIexpres or normal VGA?
And what is your budget?
For €400-500 you have the latest high performance.
For €200-300 you have a high performance card from a half a year ago (wich will be enough for a game like this).
For >€200 you have the latest low budget or mid range cards.

My graphics card costed €215 and it runs shipsim with everything set high and a good framerate.

Hello,
Also thinking of a replacement for my card (7600GT, PCIe).
Reason for that: New York hangs off after some time, functioning Nvidia driver not WHQL (sometimes error reports, without any consequences). Positive is fanless operation.
Not a 7900GS, then? I looked at http://www.tomshardware.com/graphics/graphicscards/index.html
but the prices are in $$.. and it is difficult to make a good balance between price and performance.
Shouldnt we look for a DirectX10 graphics card instead? What are the intentions of VStep in that domain, will they go over to DirectX10? to Linux?
Regards,
Luc

I would think DirectX 10 would be a logical move . . . Mark, Pjotr?

Hello,
I have an nvidia xfx 7900gt, all my games run perfect with this card.
It is now a budget card, six months ago not.  :)

What other specs on your comp? What memory count do you use on the card?

The 7900 GS is a good card, only the software doesn't work verry well on my system.
For the people who dont know: The GT series are allways better(faster) than the GS series.

You could allso take a look at ATI, they allso have good chipsets.

Ship Simulator 2008 will run on the latest version (April 2007) of DirectX 9.0c. We do not use any features that are only available in DirectX 10.

AriesDW: Just as the 2006 version will Ship Simulator 2008 be created for Windows systems only.
Possibly the game works in Linux in combination with a DirectX wrapper, but we will not officially test or support it.

Thanks Mark for the notice. I use a Windows Pro platform, so I am good.
