So does Terry, on 64 bit Windows 7.

If you upgraded from XP or Vista, you need to reinstall Ship Simulator. The Windows Upgrade seems to make a mess of it all.

I have windows 7 and installed Ship Sim V1.0 from the disc and all runs fine.

However, when I tried to install the 'ShipSim2008.Update.v10-v142.exe' and tried to run Ship Sim I get a Quest 3D error along the lines of 'A channel that is needed for this project has an incorrect engine version'.

On hitting OK there is a request box offering to download the latest Quest 3D version. I have tried downloading this and it makes no difference at all.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Or how it can be remedied? It may not have anything to do with Windows 7 at all, but I do know that the installation of the upgrade patch worked on Windows Vista.

Thanks in advance. I'm off to uninstall and reinstall v1.0 so I can play the game, but it's missing so much not to mention not being able to install New Horizons. Oh well.

Hi keithd
Before you update check wich version you have installed then you can follow
terrys flow chart it might not be that update you need.

Thanks for the advice. I was running v1.00 according to the screen which is why I installed the v10-v142 file.

Is Terry's flowchart on here somewhere? I'll take a look, but if you don't mind putting a link on here I would be grateful. Thanks again.

I'm reading that a lot of people can get SS2008 working properly on Win 7, but I have a hard time to get it run properly. I can only run the free roam. I can't run any of the missions, if I do, QuestViewer stops responding

Your computer looks okay to run Ship Simulator 2008. You might have to do this:
Click start, in the search bar, put the following in:
C:\users\[Your name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\
and delete the Vstep folder. Reboot the system and it might have a difference when you play SS08.

Although some subjects about problems with SS08 and Win 7, I installed SS08 on my new laptop.
Hereby in short how I installed ShipSim 2008 (SS08).

OS:
Win 7 Home Premium (32 bits)

Computer: Acer Travelmate 7730 series.
CPU: IntelCore 2 Duo T6670 (2,2 z, 800Mhz FSB)
RAM: 4 GB DDR3
Graph: NVidia Geforce 9600M GT (1GB installed)

CD : Ship Simulator 2008 (SS08)
DVD: Ship Simulator 2008 New Horizons (SS08NH)

Installation:
A- Logged in as Administrator
B- Made use of "The Ship Sim 208 Upgrade path" van T. Russell(see attachment)

With B- I did:
1. Normal install from CD SS08.
2. Restart PC and entered license code.
3. Install from DVD SS08NH.
4. Restart PC  and entered license code.
5. Check vsnr in under left screen corner (Vs 1.4.1 Build 1036)
6. Download Vs 1.4.2 patch from website www.shipsim.nl.
7. Install this patch.
8. Install required add-ons from website (The Shipyard)

After installation SS08 works correct. However, after closing SS08 a "QuestViewer" error causes hanging a white screen (but not the computer).
I than use <CTRL>-<ALT>-<DEL> and close QuestViewer bij 'task management'.
Although this little problem I'm happy SS08 works properly ...... but has someone a solution for 'the hanging white screen'?
In attachment I enclose "The Ship Sim 208 Upgrade path" and my DxDiag.

Kind regards,
Javel

Hi weigong198,

Welcome to the forum.

You also have the same answer:
Win7 is not officially supported for SS 2008. If you follow the suggestions above, you may be able to get it to work most of the time. However, some missions may not run.
Extremes will run on Win7.

Hi Alex,

Welcome to the forum.
There are many possible causes for that problem:

If the publisher’s video does not run, you may not have the required codec to show it. The fact that the Mission Editor runs tends to point that way because no codec is required for the ME.

Win7 is not well supported for running SS08.

Your graphics adapter has only 308 MB of dedicated memory; it will take 1150 MB of memory away from the CPU.

Notebook PCs seldom perform well for SS 2008, especially in the low power or “battery saver” mode.

There is nothing more I can tell you beyond reading all of the bold blue topics at the head of this board, and to read the topics that discuss the possibilities given above. I would start with installing a codec pack such as the K-lite.

Regards,
Marty

I too have problems with SS2008  :C
I think I have tried everything suggested on the forum, but can't get the game to work.

(Everything is updated on the PC...)

I've downloaded the setup-files (game, updates and add-ons) yesterday from the webpage, therefore I don't think I have to use the update-files, because the ShipSim2008.Setup.exe is already V1.4.2.

Here is the process I've tried:
1. Installed ShipSim2008.Setup.exe
2. Started game - shows version 1.4.2

3. Installed ShipSim2008NewHorizon.exe
4. Started game - shows version 1.4.2

5. Installed ShipSim2008.Elbe.exe
6. Started game - shows version 1.4.2

7. I didn't try any mission but quit the game, then the error "Questviewer has found a problem..." appears.

8. I unregistered and uninstalled the game, deleted the mentioned folders,
   restarted the PC,
   reinstalled only the ShipSim2008.Setup.exe-file,
started the game (this time the VSTEP-video shows up, it didn't do that on the previous install today),
I pressed "Esc" or "Enter" to skip the video, the PC exits immediately to Windows with the error "Questviewer has found a problem..."

I'm looking forward to any help or suggestions  :2thumbs:

For all those who have ss08 on Windows 7. I run version 1.4.2 fine but i had the same problem at first, fix it by simply right clicking on the icon going to propertys, compatability you will find a box saying "run this program in compatability mode for" check the box, the one below it will become highlighted click on it and select windows XP (works best) service pack 3 and click apply. now try to start the game and it should run fine.

Had a big problem starting SS08 on my win 7 x64 home.
I could run Mission Editor fine, its just the main game.
My version appears to be 1.4.2 from the mission editor.

hope this helps someone...

So when I start the game, I get the VStep logo and once it reaches 100% I get a message...
ActiveMovie Window: QuestViewer.exe - System Error
The program can't start because MFC71.DLL is missing from your
computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.

So I have to kill QuestViewer to exit this message.
I've try installing the game again,
tried running SS as administrator and WinXP modes.
I then tried copying  MFC71.DLL  from www.dll-files.com  to my system32, no different.
then I copied MFC71.DLL to my SysWOW64 folder and wow it works! It asked for my key and bingo I'm sailing.
Anyone had this issue?

Hello Evyse,

Welcome to the Forum. Please read Reply # 52 in this thread regarding this matter.

You can run SS 2008 on Win 7. First make a backup of the QuestViewer.exe file in SS 2008. Then copy the QuestViewer.exe file from SSE and paste it into the SS 2008 folder. It will replace the original file (so it is important that you make a back up first).

If you already own SS 2008, please register the License Key in your Profile in this Forum.
