Hi All :)
A few weeks ago I decided to produce a little magazine for ShipSim. I first got the general idea from the VS forum, however I've tried to expand on that idea and include more in it. This issue doesn't have a huge amount in however I have big plans to expand if you guys like it.
I'd like to say a huge thank you to NathanC who provided all the pics except for the cover picture and for his wonderful article on PoR.
Please download and please give feedback on it, what you think and if you have any ideas. It really would be much appreciated!
If anyone is interested in writing a column about there experiences on multiplayer or write a review of there favourite ship please drop me a PM. Also send me a message if you have any ideas for stuff to include in the magazine!

Hi All,
I had an idea sent to me today for a mission section.
I hope to include stuff like:
- Small reviews on a few missions (custom or ones that come with the game)
- Mission of the month
- Possibly a little area to announce new missions
What would people think of this? And would anyone be prepared to do reviews of missions and also willing to announce there own aswell as enter it for a competition?

I'm looking for mission makers or mission fans who would like to do a small two paragraph review of some missions every month for the magazine, and who would also like to perhaps enter their mission for a competition.

Should you browse the forum pages of SSHM, you will find that I, Nat, have created an idea for a Community Forum Magazine. That was where I thought he got the idea from.
Maybe he didn't.

You cannot copyright the idea to make a magazine.
And the magazines are so very different, that there is no copyright infringement that I see.

Saving documents for others to read in .docx is a really bad idea: only certain versions of Word can open it! Save it as a .rtf, as every word processor in the world will then be able to open it.

Firestar - I think really the VSTEP server does that, as far as I know you're not really saving it to your hard drive. :)

If anyone has any high quality pictures (game graphics on high and as good a quality pic as possible) and would like to donate them for use in the magazine please reply and attach them here. Only two or three are going to be used in the magazine so two pictures that really sum up MP. So no pics of flying ships please. :P
Preferably pictures with a lot of ships and action going on. :)

Matt suggested to me the other day a media section.
As you know we have a couple of pages with pictures already. These are supplied by Nathan in high quality for this section. So really we already have some pictures. :-\
However Matt suggested that it could also be used for videos aswell which I think is a great idea. We could also include pictures from players of multiplayer etc. (Not as fussed about quality)
So what I'd like to know is, would people find it too much to have the pics from SS pages aswell as an extra page for media with videos made by users and a few more pics etc? :)
People's opinions would be much appreciated :)

I thought about Maybe a monthly cartoon...If someone had the capabilitys to do it. Like that time (Someone, I can't remember the name) made those print screens of SS06, and labelled them with jokes etc.
I think that would be a nice idea, too!

I've decided to use Jack's idea of a little cartoon.
I'm looking for someone who is obviously pretty good at art and would like to draw a cartoon for the mag. It could be black and white or colour, and it doesn't have to be about SS as long as it's a humourous little picture to do with ships.

I started a thing for my now extinct website called guess the name of the ship, where i took a photo of a ship and 'altered' the image to blur it or have wavey lines in front of it - if you liked I could find them and forward them on to you if you wished? Just a thought ;)

I am however looking for someone to help prood read the mag every month. We already have a couple of people proof reading however I don't really want any mistakes in this month's. :P

Hi Guys,
Please give me time for these issues, especially this month, a lot of new pages and "features" had to be designed from scratch, it has taken a lot of work to get it ready in time.
There isn't need for a million proof readers, I don't think. Maybe even none at all!
Hehe, I only expetced one or two people to reply :lol:
I have decided to release each issue on the 1st or 2nd of each month, I have to wait for voting on the POTM to close to see who the winner is so it can't be released at the end of the current month anyway.
And yes McGherkin, the winning POTM is displayed :)
Anyway, the magazine is done, just waiting for one more piece of content if you like but that can be slipped in when I get it.
It will be sent out to proof readers today :)

Not right Jack, it's depend of the INTERNET provider, i can send e mail with 15 MB to 20MB
other has only 5 MB so you see it's different from them. nut you can take a shortcut, close anti virus program before you send mail that almost work every time

A while ago SA said that the magazine would be out in ten days. we're just eager to get the magazine proof read and released to the forum community. I'm sorry for pestering but i've been expecting it for several days and my parents are starting to think i'm becoming internet addicted. Plus they don't like the Wi-Fi being on. so every day I've got Wi-Fi on so that I can recieve the magazine is another day of torture from my parents. Once I've got it I can proof-read it offline and email my suggestions ASAP. Which means you get the magazine quicker.

Okay. But I have been whining on a bit so I thought I'd explain why.

Nathan, it's just the same case happening, like with Dom's SS United States & other models when a lot of random people were filling his inbox with requests to be one of the beta testers. :doh:
Anyway, I'm sure one but clever proof reader who'll read it several times will be enough than having a whole bunch of people with different educational level, where each one has it's own meaning of which is error/typo & which is fine.

Guys, please, starting to get a little tired of hearing about proof reading.
I did not expect so many people to want to do it. When I posted the message asking for someone, I was under the impression that I'd get one reply at most like I would if I advertised for someone to do a column or whatever. Obviously I was wrong.
I have sorted everything for this month so all is well. I have also come up with a way for next month so that we don't have all this kerfuffle. I will check stuff over as I recieve it from users before it goes into the magazine. This will make all ours lives easier.
So please let's give the whole thing a rest and I can focus on getting the mag out tomorrow. :thumbs:

At that time you'd better just PM some that you think will be good at proof reading & keep those few guys anonymous, than going & asking that in public where you get replys "I'm very good at grammar & of course will help you, besides I'm your best friend!" from each one.

Guess it's much harder with Titanic though, those lifeboats completely obstruct the view!

That's why in real life, the lifeboats were all brought further inward when in harbor, with the ones over the side (1 and 2) on top of the inward ones (Collapsible boats A and B). Other than that, it would be very useful to have access to the docking bridge (when it is finished) and to be able to look out the wing cab windows.
You can't see your bow and I can't see my sides! At least you have a bow thruster and multiple rudders! :lol:

I am now happy to report that i've fixed Richard Burns Rally (don't ask me how because I don't know) and have been playing whenever I can to get back into shape. shame it forgets my wheel's configurations every time i close it. (end Off Topic post)

Yeah, Solidworks and Pro Desktop. But they aren't freeware, they're professional CAD software.

I thought that by the fourth or so issue people may start to get slightly bored by the same old content even if it is slightly different.
So that's where the poll comes in, for new ideas and also for little surveys almost where I can see what people like / don't like and would perhaps want taken out.
That's a little way ahead yet though. :)

I went on the Dublin Viking last year, Dublin/Liverpool route. I also saw the Mersey Viking, which was coated in red. In the terminal next door to us at Liverpool.

- Writing an article. *
- Donating some pictures for the media section
- Donating usermade videos to be featured
- Someone who would like to be featured in the User in the Spotlight column. *
- Anything else I / you can think of
* I'm afraid that I already have someone to do a review of a ship for this month. However, if you would like to write about a particular experience you have had on multiplayer. E.g. you talk about a time when you sucessfully took Vermaas into port with the help of other people in tugs etc. An article explainging what you did and what others did and how it turned out. Something along those lines.
If anyone is interested in writing an article about some ships or ship etc in real life that would be appreciated to. :)
* This is what Fred did last month. I'm looking for anyone who would like to introduce themself in a slightly more detailed way. :)

I haven't been able to find the file i was looking for...managed to find plenty of other rubbish but not the file...always the way :doh:
However i have found voyage reports i made last summer for our holidays Dublin-Holyhead, Portsmouth-Caen, St Malo-Portsmouth and Holyhead-Dublin.
I will keep these handy, but i will let VH go first for this months issue, and anyone else who wants a turn, seeing i gave up my turn this month :)

I desperately need people to help out with the November issue! Someone who could write something about multiplayer, last month was a sort of overview of it this month I want to know about people's experiences on it.
This magazine won't work without the input and contribution of as many people as possible from the community.
At the moment we are already a page down from last month, I don't want to let it go any lower, I want to try and keep it around 14.

Soooo, without repeating other people's posts, I'd like to help out if you still need it. I'm not sure if someone is writing about MP, but I can do that. Also, if you need pics, I'd be more than happy to help out, I'm pretty good with fraps. Also, if you'd be interested, I make a point of sailing my sailboat around NJ/NY at least once a month, and I always take pictures. That could be an interesting addition to the mag. PM me and let me know what you think.

Yeah I would like to add something like that however when people do hold meetings warning is given literally a day or two at most, not normally a month in advance, so that could cause a few minor problems.

Ok everyone I'm pleased to say that we now have a budding artist full of creative juices (:P) to do the cartoon. In case you haven't quite guessed who it is yet, this is Fred. ;D
This should be featured for the first time in the November issue however he may not have time, so it may be another month.
We need your ideas for the cartoon. We need something that would appeal humour wise to as many people as possible. From the younger generations to the seasoned captains etc etc.

I'm now thinking about the Christmas issue.
I'm now looking for someone who would like to get involved with the magazine and take part in the User in the Spotlight.
This involves writing a few paragraphs briefly explaining who you are and focusing on your interests etc. For a good idea take a look at Nathan and Fred's pieces, these are good examples.
I don't have exact stats at the moment however based off the Issue 1 stats the magazine is getting over 1000 downloads a month, and hopefully increasing. This is a good way to introduce yourself to the community.

Thanks very much for offering a video that can be featured in the magazine.
I understand that I said it can be anything as long as it is about ShipSim and isn't sinking but I would prefer to have something with a little more substance to it. :)
Perhaps a little story showing a voyage with some nice music etc. I don't want to sound rude or ungrateful at all, because I certainly am not ungrateful, I appreciate every contribution to the magazine however it would be better to have something with a little more content.
It also means I can write a little more about the video itself! :)

Thanks for letting me know about this. I've never come across anything on FileFront before and my web advisor shows it as safe. I have heard Norton can be very intrusive so I'm not sure if that's what it is but I am currently uploading to another mirror while we wait for the VSTEP link.

I'm sorry but I cannot include links in the magazine. Only if I kept the exported version from PagePlus. And that's 90mb so I'm sure people would much prefer 17mb instead. (I reexport from Adobe Reader with CutePDF)

I don't think so; it gives information on the video and the video title. If someone wanted to watch the video then common sense would suggest that they search for it on YouTube. :)

Someone probably has a file hosted on the site that is a virus. But I can guarantee you that filefront.com and Mike's file are safe, just some downloads, since people can host anything, might be a virus.

I couldn't understand what I was doing wrong, untill I remembered I allways download the SS Magazine from FileFront..There the download/saving went smoothly.. :)

On the upper left corner should be a button save a copy. You can also save it by right clicking on the link and select "save as.."

As stated in the January Issue, ShipSim Magazine is now in partnership with Ship Sim News; which if you remember a while back was virtual news from ShipSim where users created reports on multiplayer events etc.
As part of a revival of SSN, ShipSim Magazine has joined forces with SSN in which we hope will be a great partnership. We hope to start off in the February Issue with a page dedicated to SSN and news articles from SS. We're now looking for people who want to write short virtual news reports from SS. Any scenario ranging from multiplayer to missions. I hope to be able to present this in a way similar to that of a news paper / magazine, however it depends on how many people want to be involved.
If you are interested please send me a message, you can be a new reporter or one of the old SSN ones! :)
Please note this is different from ship reviews and real life articles normally featured in the magazine. Ship Sim News is seperate from the magazine, this will be a page featuring SSN articles.

Sadly enough I have to stop printing it out in full colour on Glossy Paper. It will cost me a small fortune on ink only.
But folks, if you only could see what a quality work it is once printed on that kind of paper, it's ready to sell in every bookstore, and I'm almost sure, Mike, it would give you a pretty rise of your monthly pocket-money.

I decided to tot up the amount of people who have contributed to the magazine over the 7 months or so it's been going, and so far, 32 seperate people have directly contributed. :)

For the April issue I intend to renew the information and ads seen on the newsdesk page, as I feel some of it is a little out of date.
The old ads can be put in again if you wish, however they may be smaller to make way for any new ads. Likewise, if anyone hosts a server or you host any of the current servers featured and would like the information to be updated please let me know.

The magazine is now at a stage where I am happy with the amount of pages and content etc so now I want to focus on what you would like more of, and what can be improved out of what is in it currently.
I have setup a survey so that I can gather information on what people like etc and I hope to produce some stats from the questions.
The survey is attached.

It will be in the magazine for the next 2 months however I'd like to gather in as many opinions as possible so I can improve the mag after the survey has closed.
So I do ask that you just take a minute or two to fill it in and send it off, it doesn't take long. Even if you think the mag is a load of tosh which you are of course entitled to think please let me know through the survey, as long as you say how you think I could make it so it isn't a load of tosh. :P

I feel a little dis heartened at the moment, only 8 people have responded to the survey, out of over 2000 downloads for the latest issue (by topic views). Finding people willing to do only small things is now becoming hard. All the work is currently being done by 4 or so people instead of the community.

Hello, my name is Wave Music (WM for short), I'm ex-DIAMANT, ex-Cushioncraft, ex-... well, that shouldn't bother you that far. I registered somewhen long long time ago & I'm still a member of this forum. On forum I'm known for frequent name-changing (by the way, I think I haven't changed a name for about a year now... Fred, get in here!), posting unbearably sarcastic posts, that even I myself sometimes can't get the sense in them, driving topics in offtopic direction when the original subject is too boring for me to read & posting other trash. Ah, also everyone's usually wondering about my huge memory... Yeah, keep on wondering! I also like to do some "detective work" here. To my mind, many of members & especially mods don't like my behavior here & looking for every occasion to ban me. Speaking, of bans, how many times I was getting a life, Fred? ...yeah, I can't remember that too. Let's just say "many times". Oh, I also sometimes play on MP when I'm bored. The scenario is 1:1 the same every time. In Marseille I sail AS from islands in to harbour & after mooring I usually get bored & go out. What about my real life... umm that shouldn't bother you - using firestar12's words from MP: "Why do you want to know that? You wanna come here & kidnap me?"

Meant as cheek or not, you painted a pretty good picture of yourself and that picture is as I described it aswell, and you know it. You take topics off topic without good reason, you provoke (you hope) negative reactions from people with sarcastic remarks, you try to put oil on fires that start, are rude to new members who are guilty of nothing more than not having any experiene.. etc.
And what's more, you do it conciously and deliberatly. That is worse than some kid lying to look cool to the older guys, to name an example. Yet you self-richeously target such a kid thinking you are better, on occasion. Newsflash, you're not.
You can't have missed the few hints I gave you, even though last time you also ignored my pm's about that again. Which is rude enough on it's own.
Just saying, you better make sure that this image of you changes to something more positive. The past shows that it ends in bans with you all the time, so the future will to, if nothing changes. Plain simple logic, I would think. And the next one, or should I say final one even perhaps, will be a lot lot longer than the last.
Oh and if you could please refrain from bothering other members by digging up remarks from the past and going for some kinda confrontation with those, I would be much obliged. You know what I mean, has to do with a remark in this topic. If diggin needs to be done, we'll do it. We don't need your trolling like that.
Take this to heart, as our patience runs thin.

If you haven't done so already go back through the SS mags already published as there are handy hints in a number of them. They are in the main written by 'Ballast' when he isn't sailing here and there in his day job, they are very useful. Also there is a manual written by 'Marty' but it is not readily apparent. You have to go back into your pc program menu and find it in the folders for SS - which one I can't remember but there aren't that many to scroll through!! Or else click on the 'manual' entry at the top of the forum page, just remembered that!!
Hopefully when SSE comes out there will be a 'help' function on the main menu, we shall just have to wait and sea.

Well, we're now back in August, which means the magazine's first anniversary! :2thumbs:
This month will be an extra large issue to mark it, and I need your help. In order to make this the largest issue to date, I need people to contribute. In particular real life pictures and in game pictures. Please make sure all pictures are your own, especially real ones so that we have no copyright problems.
Otherwise, I'm pretty easy on what you do, we just want as many people helping as possible!!

The makers have proven that they realy make a very high quality magazine.I looked at it every month,and it seems to become better and better by the numbers.
I wish you many more editions,now that the Extreme version has become a reality.
