Probably one of the most iconic parts of a ship is the whistle...so why are they so rubbish in Ship Sim?! All of the modern large ships have the same whistle that you can't even hear unless you are on the deck of the ship! Also, they just sound awful with no echo at all. I really would like this to be sorted out in a future patch!

Does anyone else think that the horn on the Fairmount Sherpa sounds like the Alien Machines out of War of the Worlds? :-*

They should get themselves some really good sound recording devices or hire someone that is really professional with such stuff. ;)

I could make 'em some- Ive already made Titanic's engines sounds from scratch, (Cranks pounding, railings shaking, that kinda thing! :D and have done a few engine sounds for the container ships in virtual sailor and would be willing to help! :)

well, it is not a very neccesairy part of the game, it sounds more like a sound if you are doing your big ''buisness'' on the toilet, :D but that are the horns of the ship right?

Well, do you have VS? Cos if you have the Constance boat, the Ranger V2 or the racing yaghts, these have some of my sounds. A short vid would be good, but I have 3 on the go at mo and it seems a little pointless-as I said, Ive only done a few. Ill try to upload one onto this thread sometime. :) I made Titanic's by recording the engine of an old Bristol (London) Bus, slowed down 43 times, added bass, reverb crossfading etc. for the cranks, and the rest I either obtained from various places, asked someone else on VS if I could use elements of their sounds to edit or made them from scratch. (I use audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

Oh, well-no doubt youve got ships sim 08 and Im sure thats 10 times better! :)
Now, I know this sounds kinda crazy, but I heard the engine of a Komatsu 930 dumper and thought, 'Sped up, that would sound great as a yaght engine' (As you do (!) ;D) But anyway, its horn sounds quite boatish. tweaked a little, I think it may pass.

No, I havnt got the game, but Ship Sim probably uses an archive system. (I.e, Midtown madness uses the .ar archive, need for speed uses the .viv archive-that kinda thing.) It may even use raw format sounds (ones only the game can open) these are better quality. But, hey, I might be wrong! Ill look in the demo and see what I can find!

p.s- A Synthesizer? I use a polyphonic mophonic synthesizer II for my music and even that sounds... well, synthesized!

The ships horn sounds pretty crappy, there is no echo or fading when you release the H button.

Yes, you are all right, we can improve the sounds. Problem is, it's pretty hard to record good clean sounds in real life. Arranging a visit on a real VLCC or the Titanic :) is pretty hard, but even then the captain is not keen on sounding the horn when there is no navigational reason for that.
In short, any help with good sounds (also engine sounds) is welcome, and may well be added to the August patch (or another patch). Please send them to me (pjotr@vstep.nl) as mp3 email attachment and we'll check them out.

They should try and record the true sound of a ships horn for SS2008. I appreciate the fact that it is difficult, but the sound are really bad!!

I would rather see that the whitles sounded louder (alot) + echo, then variation. Adding echo and making them sound louder can't bee that hard, can it? ???

I know that the horns are not the best. But give them a break. They are the first to make a ship Simulator with good grapics and pretty good shiphandeling. ;) But the sound of the horn is no big deal. It will improve with time. ;)

After you have selected your desktop double click on the Yellow/Orange volume icon on the taskbar. "RealTek" will appear now if you are not already on "Sound Effect" section please do this now.
Last but not least select any of the "Enviroment" dropdown list listing and continue playing Ship Simulator 2008. You will notice a difference.

Actually the Titanic horn is the real thing.
Certainly, the horn on the Titanic is probably the best, and the most realistic in the whole game!!

Are there some new revelations concerning this issue? I found the "horn.wav"-file in the respective object's directories, however, I have an additional issue when running the addon-vessels - there is no horn sound at all, although the "horn.wav"s are present.
Did anybody experiment with replacing the horn-sounds yet? And did anybody find the location of the engine-sounds (yuck!) ?

okay, so the 'horn.wav'-files in the respective object's directories (in 'Actors') can just be replaced with any other *.wav-file and work just fine, everybody is able to overcame those synthie-sounds. As there are numerous resources on sim-sites and others where one can get free horn-sounds, at least I find some satisfaction in making them sound at least a bit better, although I have no clue as far as resemblence to the originals is concerned.
I'll attach some of the sounds I use that I found free of charge and license, so I guess it's not a problem to post them here.
To make the sound available within your ShipSim, copy the respective sound into the [ROOT]\Actors\Objects\[DEST] (e.g. D:\ShipSim2008\Actors\Objects\RedJet ), backup the present 'horn.wav' and rename the copied file into 'horn.wav'. Done.
Still no clue why the horn sounds on the addon ships don't work but I suppose it must have something to do with the fact that the Keystroke is not recognized.

I could use some nice authentic horn sounds for the smaller vessels like the Pilot, Rescue and Motoryachts ...
Btw, the horn used for 'Titanic' in ShipSim is identical with the one used in the famous freeware addon for VS ...

I think just adding some reverb or echo to the horns would go a long way. Even with the ones we have. If you have a sound card that allows you to add some of these effects, you can see what I mean.

What Vstep should do.
Fidn the REAL SHIP that they have in ship simulator (NOT The Titanic ofcourse...) And simply tell the captain to sound the whistle. They shoudl record it wth sound devices and Volia!
Will take a long time I know, but face it... Its wirth it and most of the ships are from Rotterdam anyway (this annoys me so much...)

Sure: If man wants different horn for ship then follow instructions in text. If not, disregard.

Reverb and delay (echo) can be recorded into the sound file. You don't need expensive equipment for that. When it comes to realistic ship sounds maybe VSTEP should leave that for some that have a lot of experience when it comes to sound recording even if it may cost a lot. I hope you find a solution on this anyway ;)

I used the horn hyperfinch made for the PoR in the Vermaas, it sounds excellent. I also changed the Harbour tugs horn to one i found and i'm currently changing nearly all of them.

TJK YOU ARE A GENIUS! :D, i looked through some of those files and VSTEP could use the m for better engine sounds on some boats and also add a new feature that will make your ship simulating more realistic, False starts of the boat/vessel. OF course then evrtime you would start a game the engines would be off and you would have to turn them on.It may get a little anoing but welcome to the real world, of course this would not happen often, just sometime ;).Also there aare tons, they can upgrade, just looks through that list.

When Fred played one for the first time,he had the volume at the same level as he had beenusing for the current set of sounds. He said that the new ones knocked him off his chair!
It's been quite a long time since they were ready, but I still don't know when they plan to release them ???
I'd release them through my own site, but I'm afraid that if several hundred people tried to download at the same time, it might affect my business, which requires the site (the set is around 60 Mb).

They will be released eventually, I know. Vstep accepted them a couple of months ago and announced the forthcoming release in the last newsletter. But since then, there has been silence.
It just gets frustrating, as I believe that they are a set of excellent sounds.
