Title: Mice
Post by: llamalord on August 09, 2008, 19:33:38
I was out washing and doing some keep up on my boat this morning and I found a single mouse dropping on the inside of my boat.  I figured it was on the cover and fell in when I pulled it back.  But to my horror I later found out that the cover on my sun top was shedding.  I looked more closely and found two mouse sized holes in the cover, on the outside of the boat thankfully.  But still I can't take my boat off the trailer and into the lake today like I was planning to do for the next few weeks.  You can tell they are living in there because not only is my cover full of holes there is also signs of mouse urine that went through the cover.  I've had mouse problems before, In the attic (One once thank god) in the air conditioning covers, in both of our cars, I'm my Tractor, in the barn, in the garage, and now my boat. I'm going to vacate them from the sun top in a minute before they find there way into the cabin.

I now need to buy a new cover and maybe a new sun top (I don't know how bad it is yet) I need to know if any other people out there have any suggestions on how to keep this terrible fiend out of our loved boats.

Sorry guys but I'm looking for some real answers, :(

A mouse trap will not stop them from eating their way in and,   I've heard the cat thing too many times now, even before this happened and I was just worried about it happening.

The only thing I can think of so far is some moth balls in the cover.  ::) Stinky

My cat, Suzie, is now 23 years old. But she is an excellent rat and mouse and shrew catcher. She regularly brings my wife some breakfast (head of shrew is a favourite treat).

I take her (the cat) with me every couple of weeks when I go to the boat. She wanders around, sniffing here and there before dozing off in some warm spot while I do the work.

Never any rodents on board, but I think that the scent of a cat may make mice prefer to go to a vessel without that scent. Rather like yours, LlamaEmperor.

My boat is on the water and I have special disks on the ropes that prevent rodents scurrying along them. That may be the real reason, of course. If yours is on a trailer, you may need to figure out the paths by which they can clamber in and make them impossible to negotiate. If it is under a roof, consider where they may jump in from above and prevent those routes as well.

Wow, you have a great cat, so it seems ;D.

My story now ;D: A while ago, our yard was filled with rats everynight because my dad fed(and still does) feed the birds and squirls that come into the yard. I used to feed them peanuts ;D. Anyway, my family invented a couple of clever ways to trap and kill the rats. My dad is a carpenter so he built a rat trap. It is a simple metal cage with a door. He would put some bird seed into the cage and wait for a rat to step in. Then, when a rat went into the cage, he closed the door with a rope, trapping the rat instantly. Then, he killed the rat.

That seemed to prove unuseful, since all the other rats saw what happened and said" No nononono!!!, I am not going in there!" ;D. So, we got a BB gun, as capt. de velle suggested ;). It wasent a pistol or anything, it was a BB gun, about the size and look of a western rifle. I like it ;D. Anyway, when we saw a rat, we would shoot ;D. That was my dads enjoyment. But, since my dad was old, his eyesight has faded a bit. He doesent need glasses, but.... you know ;).

So, the last method we used(Quite simple really) was to get rat traps. We have never had a rat since ;). And for a rat trap, it really just depends what you put on it for bait. Peanut butter makes exelent bait :). And that, is my story and advise for you ;D.

I'm allergic to peanuts ::)

So far Terry had the best ideas because unlike most of the worlds population I can't kill anything.  I find my moral sence talking to me about anything over 1/4 inch in length.  I know it seems a little bit silly but I kind of like the thought of saving living things. :-[

Buy a cat.  8) ;)

My cat has caught 6 mice since we moved here 3 years ago. 2 of them were just last month. The other was decapitated at the bottom of the stairs when we woke up. And the other I saw when I got out of the shower!

I don't like to imagine that, since seeing a mouse in a cat's mouth doesent really make me think of roses ;D. It makes me think more along the lines of graves and a jail cell ;D.

Moth balls won't help mice will they? You could put some poison in there.

I've been through this I'm not a killer -No Poison-

Some one suggested dryer sheets and they said it worked. :-\

mice are never going to stop unless they are gone...

I assume you have a floor storage compartment for the cover and other stuff? Anything in there or any of the other storage compartment?

On the other hand, from the cat's point of view it means freedom from hunger for a while, perhaps food for kittens. Unlike humans they only hunt for food. Being carnivores, they don't have many options.

My wife choose sto be vegetarian. I eat fish but no other meat. My cat is actually a vegetarian, whether she knows it or not (due to aging kidneys), but quite naturally, she hunts mice, rats, rabbits and will scrap with dogs and foxes, as well as going berzerk with strange cats on her territory.

Well, I can't really say on the other hand because I only have 2 hands and we both used one, LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D. So, I will say that it shouldent give them a break from hunger because I assume that the cat is fed, so there should be no reason for hunger :).

I like to eat whatever my mom cooks ;D. I am not a very pickey eater ;).

I HAVE LOTS OF SOLUTIONS :

1) big guns that fire live shells (my favourite)
2) chase them with a sharp sword
3) bow & arrows
4) catapult
5) spud gun
6) spear

any one of these will work

And now we are back to logical or fictional! I am your host, The Captain. Today we are testing John Carters methods in the logical lab of logistics. He claims that all of them work, but for the special demands of our topic starter, LLama Lord, Here are the results:

Method 1:big guns that fire live shells. Logical(Fictional) Fictional because our topic starter has said multiple times that he does not want to kill anything

Method 2:chase them with a sharp sword. Logical(Fictional) Fictional because a mouse can outrun a human any day. And again it involves killing somthing.

Method 3:bow & arrows. Logical(Fictional)Fictional because it involves killing the mouse.

Method 4:catapult. Logical(Fictional) Fictional because catapults are extremely innacurate, the mouse could outrun the projectile and it would involve killing the rat.

Method 5:spud gun. Logical(Fictional) Fictional because it would involve killing the mouse.

Last and final method: Spear. Logical(Fictional) Fictional because you need to have practice with a spear to even think about hitting a mouse and it would involve killing the mouse.

You know LLama lord has stated very clearly that he does not want to kill anything, let alone a mouse. In every one of your suggestions it involves killing the mouse and most methods are innacurate along the lines of sucess. The next time you enter a topic, make sure you read all the posts, or in this case, just some of them!

So, our client John Carter claims that the ideas are usable in the case that we are in. But, all of his ideas have been proven Illogical. Thanks for playing folks. Tune in next week for another episode of Logical or fictional!

ROFL ;D ;D ;D ;D.

ok, i accept your criticism cap, so if all else fails, here are some tried & tested methods from our local rat catcher

1) hit them over the head (there's not yours) with a heavy hammer
2) throw flour bombs at them
3) pick them off with a whip
4) use a machine gun
5) carpet bombing (using bombs not carpets)
6) limited thermonuclear strike
7) an all out attack with dental floss

John,

Please stop posting killing methods.

Llamalord has stated very clearly that killing animals is not what he wants. Therefore your posts are severely off-topic and may be considered to be spam.  ;)

ok guys i can take a hint, here is a real suggestion based on my own experiences of mice.

i had mice in my house. they were living in the loft space. the advice i was given, was they were getting in through ventilation bricks & climbing up the cavity.

i know, i could hardly believe it. i was told to cover the vents with a fine metal mesh, must be fine mesh as mice can squeeze through very small holes.

this i did & the problem stopped. i obviously can't go into how we dealt with the mice already entrenched in the loft ........

so, my suggestion is, block all possible holes, cover others with fine mesh. build a mesh "wall" around the gunnels of the boat, with the top of the wall at an angle outwards .... worth a go ?

unfortunately, for those mice already onboard i know of no way of getting rid of them without some degree of pain, so perhaps you could make friends with them & let them die of old age. not sure how long this would take.

please take this as a serious suggestion (it helped me), it may not solve the problem 100%, but may go some way to help.

ps .... if i get banned for this, i will go quietly into the oblivion of vs, fsx & destoyer command, wimper, sniff sniff.
Title: Re: Mice
Post by: llamalord on August 11, 2008, 03:29:50
I do take that as a real suggestion because That is what I had to do with my barn. The vent's are no longer high speed mouse ways. ;)

I got the mice out of the top and unbolted it from the boat and put it in the garage.  I'm planning on seeing if I can patch it up Really good so it look new becuase if I don't...   ...$500 worth nothing.

The mice never really lived in there, It looks like the chewed their way into there on a rainy day and the next sunny day they left because it gets more than 160oF in there durring the day.

Well lamalord. there are not many ways of getting rid of them, But there Is one way I can think of, Put a strong tarp over your boat,(so they cant chew there way out) and put a one way in thing on it so they can get out and not in. Or you could put traps that just trap them, or call a exterminator.(they have things that they do that dosent kill them.)

the best thing to do is get a nice humane trap, catch the mice then release them :)

That's what I used to do, Got to see some really cute calico guys that way. ;D

But once they've wrecked the canvas...

If I ever get them IN the boat than I will definitly do that, The only problem is that you have to drive the mice far away so they can't find their way back. :P

I would suggest that if the Lord of the Llamas does not want to harm his mice then he is just going to have to live with the problem. I know of no way to get rid of them without doing serious harm to the varmints.

I unfolded my tarp this morning and found 2 hole in is. I figured it was just the tarp, The I found 2 holes in the canvass cover one in the main cabin and one in the side! >:(

This has crossed the line of a $1,000 Repair!

I might start liking the poison idea pretty soon. :(

Scent of a cat works wonders. Make friends with one and make somewhere comfortable for him/her to sleep on the top of the tarpaulin, and mice will probably not be seen.

My parents keep our boat in the garage, and there is nothing wrong with leaving your car out in the driveway ;).
