Title: Gameshadow
Post by: Captain Darling on July 29, 2008, 18:21:30
I bought another game today, and it came with a program called GameShadow that finds and updates games...

It found a patch for ShipSim called "V1.42A". I currently have "V1.42" installed but it says that the V1.42A patch is a critical patch....

Should I update to V1.42A?

Personally James I wouldn't, some of these types of sites 'claim' to give you updates which add features to a game, but in fact do nothing and put spyware on your PC. I cannot comment for sure on Gameshadow, but I thought I'd alert you :)

I'm not sure about spyware - would this help?

I doubt it would be spyware... It came with a trustworthy game.. The game is Silent Hunter 4. by Ubisoft..

I know there isn't one on the ShipSim website..

I'm just seeing if it is a official patch... Maybe a Moderator can confirm if it is or not??

James,
It could not be an “unofficial patch” other than a replacement sound, or a re-skin.
I hear from friends in the few groups who are actively engaged in attempting to produce third party add-ins; none are producing any patches.
I am personally apposed to independent third party add-ins, but on the understanding that I will neither aid nor hinder their efforts, I get reports that give me some insight into the internals.
The latest patch is 1.4.2, easily obtained from VSTEP or an official mirror. There is absolutely no reason to get one from Gameshadow.
Marty

I just checked the FTP server to be sure. There is no newer update there.

Hiya,

Only official patch's and official add-ons are on GameShadow..

I've had a further look into it, and its the Phillips amBX patch....

Quote
The following Ship Simulator 2008 patch provides support for players to use the Phillips amBX set-up.

It is not a critical update. It is only of use to those who have bought the AMBX hardware.
Again, why would anyone go to Gameshadow to find out about patches to SS if they are members of the forum?

Indeed, you're as close to the source here as you can be, other than the people envolved in development and testing. Why would you want to think twice about another option?

All patches, critical or not, are released by VSTEP on their site, and the forum always will have an announcement about them, if they are released aswell.

I'd say, just download them from VSTEP, if VSTEP doesn't have it, it doesn't exsist, so then you don't have to wonder about a patch if it's name isn't clear.

Regards,
Fred

I Wouldn't normally..... As when I was required to install Gameshadow to install Silent Hunter4, then it did a scan for games on my pc.. and if there was updates for them...

I saw the V1.4.2A Patch as a critical patch, and wasn't aware of a patch that was called that.. So I posted here. ;)
Now that I know that particular patch is for hardware, I won't install it.....

However, It updated other games I have installed, and those were of proper patch's... And you can update your hardware drivers too... Personally I think Gameshadow to be useful when you don't know where to go to update your game or driver..

Yeah it can be very usefull if you don't really know where to look for such things, and if you don't want to watch every forum or website, if you play a lot of games that you want to keep up to date. Saves time and effort for sure.  :)

Can I just add one further clarification here?

If Gameshadow says that the amBX patch is "crtical", then you should doubt any advice it ever gives you. amBX is not V1.4.2. It's 1.4.1+amBX (so I guess it could be described as 1.4.1a, even though I have never seen it advertised as such)

The ONLY time you should install that patch is is if you have amBX compatible fans, lightning generators, rumble-walls ejector seats etc. If you install it without such dedicated, specialised hardware you are wasting memry and some of your processor speed. Also, that patch rolls your installation back to V1.4.1 and you'll need to re-aply the 1.4.2 patch to get back to date.
