Title: My Friend's Play Station 2

My friend has run into a bit of trouble with his PS2 (Play Station 2). When it is playing a game it shuts itself down and the red light flashes on the button at the front. He couldn't find an answer anywhere, but my opinion is that it could be a bit dodgy due to age and its over heating, has anybody got any opinions on this? to confirm what the problem really is?

p.s. His Playstation 2 is NOT the slim line version, it is the original playstation, like the one below.

Once on my Playstation it was quiting becuse of overheating. i did open and did clean the propell. and then it did work for me. my playstation 2 is 4 years old. and i have never had a problem with it. well 1. and its this. but i dont know
