Title: The Riverdance Does Her Final Dance. (WARNING LARGE IMAGES.)
Post by: IRI5HJ4CK on July 10, 2008, 18:41:58
Hello everyone,

Today I went down to the beach in Blackpool, England. (I'm currently living in England but i'm Irish ;)) And i took some photo's of the poor Riverdance, which is in the process of being "cut up" as they cannot save her, these pictures were taken at about 4:30 today 10/7/08 (U.K. Time)

Just to warn you, you may find these pictures quite sad :'( :( :'(

The photo below is a photo of the bow (just thought i'd point that out to you as its hard to recognise what bits what anymore :( :'(

That bit there is the center of the hull. (you can also see where they have marked the hull as to where they cut next)

That below is the stern, as you can see they have taken away one section of it, leaving some more in the sand and a slight amount above the water line.

If you are stuck as to what bit is what, refer to the first whole picture of the ship.

All Photo's shown were taken by me. If you would like to use them for something please PM me.

Kind Regards,
IRI5HJ4CK

The Riverdance was a Ireland (Dulbin i think) to Liverpool Ro-Ro ferry, and it was beached late last year. It's quite sad to see her like that, shes been sat there for a while now  :(

She operated from Heyshum to Dublin I think.

Her sistership 'Moondance' recently beached herself close to the exact spot where the Riverdance is! Luckily the tide refloated her, and she's currently in Liverpool being repaired.

Jeres a picture of when shs had just beached herself (well, in the morning) then gradually she started to list, getting to where she is now, that is what caused the damage. And heres another picture of when she was afloat.

And here is more images of just after she beached herself (then over the course of the week she listed further down resulting in the images you see from me)

Now, as you can see, she has listed further over:

On this picture she has listed slightly more and the containers have broken loose, this is where the crane takes them off.

As you can see here she has listed further over again.

The Riverdance has been stranded for a while now and as you can see rust has started to develop.

More listing.
Cranes then started work on her.

Then she tilted all the way over, meaning that water got into the weelhouse and on decks. This meant equipment and other things would be ruined, rust had taken its toll on the vessel. So, the company decided she would be worth more as scrap metal.

what happned to her did she sink run aground And what kind of ship was she

What happened was this,

On a stormy night the Riverdance sailed over to England via the Irish sea, at this time winds and waves were rough and the Riverdance was thrown around quite a lot. As she was sailing out at sea her engines stopped and they couldn't be restarted, this resulted in the Riverdance being unable to do anything but just sit and wait. Suddenly huge waves started to crash over the Riverdance sending her towards Blackpool Beach, then, the captain tried to turn her starboard to try and some way save the vessel, but, she hit the beach.

She is what you call a Ro-Ro Ferry that used to transport cargo.

Jack.

haha thing is, her props are huge and plus, the pieces of her hull are going for scrap metal, and you aren't allowed around her either (at the beginning you could walk around her (on the beach) but then they decided to stop people doing that as there was people trying to get on her)

Thats not what i've been told..

Riverdance was doing her usual Warrenpoint(Ireland) to Heysham(Lancaster) route. She was bound for Heysham when she hit a freak wave(About 12meters), which then moved freight on her car decks, which resulted in Riverdance listing in heavy seas. The captain got everybody on the bridge and sent a may day call out. Riverdance wasn't able to maneuver, and the ship was drifting the where she lays now. Then she obviously beached. The 4 Passengers and crew were evacuated by a RAF Helicopter. However, the Captain and a officer stayed onboard to try and unbeach her and save the ship. But that was unsuccessful and they too evacuated the ship.

Thats what I've been told ^^ :-\

Some companies didn't let their ships go out that night because of the bad weather, exp. Steam Packet

What exactly did she do to be sunk? Did she crash into something, or was she being mean and they had to do that as her punishment ;D.

Too much damage was done, she was worth more to them as scrap metal. :(

Too much damage was done, she was worth more to them as scrap metal. :(

Also, one of her two rudders broke off when she was beached, and suffered some damage to her keel which I believe resulted in one of her propeller shaft being misalgined. Despite all this, Riverdance's owner was initially hopeful of salvaging her and bring her into a drydock for emergency repairs.

Then a few days later a second storm hit the area again, which caused more damage to Riverdance and made her list even further. When it became apparent that the repair was going to be very huge and expensive, she was finally declared a total loss.

It's always a shame to see a ship ending up like this, but thankfully no lives were lost, that's the main thing.

Yes its a shame alright, but, like you said, nobody died, so that is a good thing. I think that if they had of got some tugs on her not long after the incident, the Riverdance would have been out of there, but because they took forever, the amount of time taken allowed the Riverdance to list onto her side, causing damage and rust etc. but that is my personal opinion :)

I know you'll all hate me for saying this ut why not strap dynamite to the hull and get rid of it even quicker  :)

It makes sense to use the metal for something else instead of destroying it  ;D

Ok reasons why not to do that:

1) It would destroy the metal that they were planning to sell on

2) It would be dangerous.

3) It wouldn't not be allowed because of public safety

4) It would make a mess of the beach

5) The chemicals on the metal could possably pollute the sea

6) people would try and take bits of the wreckage up

7) It would blow a big hole in the beach

8) Bits of metal would probably fly everywhere

9) Its a waste of explosives

10) if they can break her up on site and remove the metal in chunks, why blow it up?

Reasons to do that:

1) Its quick and easy

2) It would bring many tourists

3) it would be funny to watch bits of metal fly everywhere.

4) you would probably be able to get a piece of the Riverdance because bits would fly everywhere.

5) It would be remembered in history.

6) It would be hilarious to watch people fall into the giant hole the explosives would make

hahaha  :D ;D :D ;D

Especially considering the current steel shortage ;)
