Title: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: IRI5HJ4CK on June 18, 2008, 20:20:37
Hi guys,

I was talking to Terry earlier about my dads boat and his boat, and I thought it would be nice to see if other people have their own real boat, or they are in some way connected to boating/ships.

Some general info like below would be nice:

Name of vessel:
Age/Year Built:
Vessel Type:
Engine Type:
How many knots produced:

and if you can a picture would be nice for us all to see :) if you don't have one don't worry.

Here's my dads boat:

Name of vessel: Mary Elizabeth
Age/Year Built: 1980
Vessel Type: Colvic Watson
Engine Type: Saab inboard diseal
How many knots produced: 8 knots (depending on tide)

My dad has a boat, but it has been sitting in our garage for 4 years I believe :P. All I know is that its name is imperial so I am hoping that one of you guys know all the other details. Every time we take it out on the water, it breaks. Once, we had to get towed from the middle of a bay, to the nearest dock :D.

I cant really take a picture of it because it is sitting in the garage and there is stuff all over, so you wont really be able to see most of it. Further more, I do not have a picture of it :-\.

MY BOAT IS BACK IN THE WATER!

A little while ago, I posted a shot, saying "my boat is here", and DJM thought I was joking (at that time). I could see why he thought that, and I was teasing a little. The boat was exactly where I said it was (amongst 1,000 others). Since then, it had to be lifted out and some work done to teh hydraulic ram on the drive leg. But now it's back!

Here are some shots I took a few minutes ago.

I live about 400 yards (metres) from the beach, here in Selsey, which at the eastern end of the Solent. My boat is about 5 miles away at Chichester Marina. I popped in to check that they had put her back in the water, as I came back from seing a client today.

Yep, the other shot was off Google Earth, I think.

Is the sound of the ocean suthing, or does it just get annoying. I am asking because for you, you have to hear the ocean every single day :P.

I've lived here for over 20 years. To be honest, I don't notice it any more, which is kind of a shame.

But most evenings I go for a walk around the village and along the sea wall. I hear it then. I can sit on a seat facing the sea and drift off... I find it very soothing.

Ahh, that is the shame for people who do not live near the ocean. We have to go out to wherever and buy these casets of the jungle, or the ocean or theparking lot at work :D.

Well, I was hoping to go out today in my boat, but the weather forecast was not good. But when I do go out, I am going to take my video camera (which I bought specially for this) and I shoot some scenes from within Chichester Harbour and out on the Solent.

Then I will post a link from the Creator's Forum so that people can see it in real life. All being well, probably during week beginning 30th June. (weather permitting). Tomorrow I will go and fill her up with petrol. You'll hear the sound of my crying.....

In florida, the average temperature is about 80 degrees. You want to complain abou the cold, or the heat ;D?
Title: Re: Do you have your own real vessel?
Post by: TerryRussell on June 20, 2008, 21:10:34
Well, here next to the Solent, the temperature range is not great. We rarely get frosts and we rarely get much above 80F. Since my wife came here from New Jersey, she finds that the only way to tell the time of year is by how long the rain is visible in daylight. ("No seasons" she says).

My sister in law just laughs. She lives in Tampa, FL.

The weather has been very bad here in florida, raining every day for the past week :(. It is almost as if we are cursed with rain, to never see sunshine again ;D.

Has your wife ever considered judging the time of year by when the flowers bloom :D? I am sure you guys have some nice flowers.

In the first year that my wife was here, she looked out onto our garden on Christmas Day and said "When do the flowers stop?".

"They don't", I replied.

We have flowers all year round here. See shot from February. For the first time in ages, we actually had snow. It lasted about 2 hours then melted. A few hours later it was about 75F.

To drag this thread kicking and screaming back to the topic....

I don't know if you're interested but I'll tell you anyway. Anything much larger than a big rowing boat needs special equipment to lift it out of the water. At the Marina where I keep my boat, they have a set of large slings that can handle vessels up to about 25 metres.

I'm sure that it won't happen in Ship Simulator 2008 but it would be cool to have a way of taking boats out of the water (a bit like the cranes for Vermaas). "Ship Maintenance Simulator 2010".  ;D

Here is a picture of the smaller set of slings used at the marina. In the background you can see the small blue tractor that pulls it around:

Very nice, i'd like to see a slipway that works in ship sim, and cranes that could lift boats in and out of the water, i also think sem-submersibles would be a nice idea. I think that ship sim needs to be more interactive, like being able to open bow doors, being able to use lifeboats etc. all that sort of thing. Maybe we will see this in ship sim 09/10

thay fold down and the boat sales on the hidroics get to work and the hole thing comes out the water very clever and no need for a tractor

Hi Chris.

Yes, in the Marina, they have a very large set of slings that go into the water (I'll take a photo when I'm there next). That is under a gantry that rolls over the water out on jetties. They bring the boat in over the slings under the water and then pull up the sling. The Gantry then rolls back off the jetty onto the tarmaced area and puts the boat wherever it needs to be stored.

That tractor is just for towing boats sat in the sling round to wherever they're being stored. The Marina is about 1 mile aound the edge and boats are stored all the way around it.

Not all boats have to be lifted to get out of the water. They also can be hooked up to a trailer. Does anyone have one of those? I do ;D.

Yes usually the ribs are on trailers, which are then launched via slipway, usually bigger boats are lifted in, and stay in until work is needed (like antifowling) then the vessel is lifted out usually via crane.

Jack. :)

Ooh, ooh. I just walked across the green outside my house past the newsagent. In the window there is a card advertsing two boats for sale (a job lot, take both). One looks like a standard fishermans boat, 15ft GRP with 30HP Mercury on the back. Half cabin. The other is a 10ft GRP tender with 5(might be 10) HP Honda. It is quite unusal, has a cover over the bow and other features.

Both are on what look like reasonable trailers. £2,000 the lot, with GPS and radio. I am sorely tempted... Not sure if I can hold back. In fact I might just get up now and go and

The speedometer goes up to 85mph (136kph) but it's rated up to 65mph (104kph)

I've only got it up to 45mph (72kph) though, because thats the speed limit on the lake. ;D

Fingers crossed, if the weather is OK on Wednesday, I'm taking mine out. We're going to go from Chichester Marina, out over Chichester Bar. Then up between the Solent Forts and then on past Portsmount, then to Bramble Bank and up the Solent.

I've got the video camera all powered up with spare batteries, so I hope to video some of it. If the water is flat enough, we should get 60+ kts (70mph) out of it. The sobbing sounds you'll hear are me when I fill up the fuel tank. £1.20 per litre.

How does two hundred gallons sound?  :o

About a gallon to the mile. (1 mpg) A bit better (1.5 - 2 mpg) when get up to about 50 kts.

Mine is petrol, so I didn't have the jump that the diesel people did. Diesel is a bit more expensive.

PS £1.20 per litre = $11 per gallon I think.

Our boat has an 800liters tank so it's very expensive to fill it up with diesel

800 litres is around the same size as ours (200 gallons * 4.52 = 850 litres).

Boating is a very expensive hobby, even if you pick up a cheap boat, you still have to buy important, costly things like life jackets, radio's, GPS, flares, depth sounder's, charts, mooring fees (if your boat is constantly on water in a marina of some sort), diseal/petrol, maintenance in general is another thing,

Thats just some of it.

Yep. For example, a cheap VHF radio may cost some hundreds of pounds. The license to use it may cost another hundred in course fees and license charges etc. (although to their credit the CMA no longer charge for the ship's license for smaller vessels).

Everything to do with boats costs many times more than for any other purpose. In the Solent, simply going into any of the harbours or creeks etc will cause a bloke in a boat to spring out of nowhere and ask for money.  ;D

Look boating is nothing of an expensive hobby ontil you try my dad's hobby: Aviation
He says that every thing to do with boats is 1/10 of what it costs for planes...It's true our boat costs 11.764705882352941176470588235294% of what our plane costs. :P

Its called Force 4 Chandlery.

And he also uses other sites (can't quite recall what others, but i will have a look around the house for the catalogue's from other company's.) I also hope to start out with my own boat soon. Since i already have quite a lot of experience with my father's boat. I think i might start out with a Hardy, do you know that type of boat? here's an image of one:

No, look, I've spent the last 2 years looking at boats in that kind of price range and let me tell you.

You don't want a 175 I can go on and on but for that money explore a Larson or get a Bayliner 185 for only 2 or 3 thousand more.

I was looking at Bayliner much like that one until I found the Perfect Larson for the same price that was a whole lot better. ;)

I was out in the Solent today. Took the video camera as well. I'll post the video later, but now need a lead to connect it to the PC with the video processing software.

Came out from Chichester and went up past the Forts. Stopped to watch hovercraft from each direction, plus a fast Cat and a couple of Whitelink Ferries. Also some other vessels. Went up to Fawley and then its started raining. The small boat is open topped, so at 50 kts that hurts.

Got back to the marina and the sun came out! But I walked past a nice 30ft Fairline with a for sale notice. I may have just bought that...

Connecting to the PC is my problem, :-\  once I sit down I'm to lazy to get the camera thats only 2 feet out of my reach on the kitchen counter. ;)

You were lucky I was traveling the length of the 7 mile lake that I was on this morning avoiding Thunder Storms. Here in New EnglandUSA We have had 3 1/2 weeks of constant Severe* Thunder Storms, and another 2 weeks are coming. :(  I've had enough,  the only way I can go out on the boat is to cross my fingers. >:(

Look you have no idea, some of that hail put holes in the tarp I use to cover the canvas cover on my boat so it doesn't get all slimy.

Heh heh. Actually, I have a very good idea. I travel a great deal and have walked 200 miles in the Saharah in Summertime and the same distance in the Antarctic in the Winter. I have been in the centre of tornadoes (small, thank goodness) and experienced hurricanes and floods. I've stood on a mountain side in January in Norway (above the Arctic Circle), waiting for bus.

Weather, I understand. That's why I chose to live here in southern England where we don't get any weather, rather than in New Jersey where my wife comes from.  ;D

PS wentout in the boat again today. Weather was excellent! 80F and dry. No wind. Wound that boat up to 65 kts running down the Solent.

Yes, it certainly is.

Dan and I enjoy bombing up and down in that boat. It is fast, easy to handle and a lot of fun. One person can easily take it out (and that happens quite often).

But, I have seen a bigger one that interests me. It is open topped, like the current boat, but is about 50% larger, with heating and a galley and heads. I may just wake up shortly and find I've bought it. I know I can take it out on my own, as I've done so with vessels up to about 36ft before.

Before I bought a boat I used to rent this kind of "Boston Whaler" I thinks its a 170 (I can't tell because I'm now a Larson owner not a Whaler)

Then I went to the:

And them my own even larger boat. :D

Anyone who is on the cape in Massachusetts and wants to rent these boats and more these are from the "Ship Shops" on the Bass River on the South Shore

I was out on my boat All day with my friend today 8am-5pm! ;D
As I sit at my computer I still feel like I'm rocking back and forth. ;)

I had to tow a Jetski that was out of gas 1/2 of a mile.  I had to rock the throttle in and out of forward constantly to make sure he didn't flip because I had to tow him from his stern. :-X

Jetskis are not meant to go backwards. :-\ (He Flipped) :P

He go out of the water safely though.

Enjoy the Maiden Voyage hehe :D its always nice to watch a boat/ship go out on its Maiden Voyage, what i love about ships/boats is that they last forever if you keep them tidy, my dads boat was made in the 80's and its still going strong, and it will do for many years to come.

Best of luck,

Title: Re: Do you have your own real vessel?
Post by: Minime on July 15, 2008, 00:18:18
On our boat there is always something to spend money on, I guess also on all other boats. One time we got our engine room filled up with sea( the engine was only a few months old) so we had to change batteries( we have 4) all electricity, and engine starter and the two dynamos. But our incurance payed the most of it.
The alarm wasn't working, so we didn't find out before we saw that the boat  was losing speed, so my father had to go and see and then he saw it. This happend also one time later, but at that time all systems were working, so we didn't get any damage.

I'm running the engines in, so we didn't open her up past about 25 kts. Should get 40+ in about 20-30 more hours running time.

At the moment the starboard engine is still a bit tight, and we could only wind it up to about 3,000 rpm. Should get to 5,000 later.

The Sabb 2.2 thats in our's is a right brute of an engine  Getting it to turn over shakes the boat on hard standing, I'll see if I can make a quick video one day. Last time she was in the water, when were were going out, it certainly attracted some attention *duv duv duv duv* all the way down the channel  Cracking engine though, love it, old boats have this character that I like, but I like the new boats for the speed, especially if you run into a bit of bad weather while your out there!

One day, we were off Rhyl (North Wales) and it blew up a bit, had waves over the wheelhouse too, she handled it great, but we didn't take any chances and went onto the floating moorings, just inside.

We have a little fast fisher, a little hardy, she'll do about 22 knots on the push, but we've decided to sell both of them for a nice IP24 Fishing boat thats in the harbour, she's a lovely boat, about 9 knots maximum though.

Jack.

As both my grandpa and I live on the water a few houses apart, we have quite a few boats lying around.

As most have seen in the recent pics, I have a 28 ft ODay sailboat, 10hp inboard diesel, does approx 8knots, with a 10 ft inflatable tender, 9.9 hp Mariner 2stroke Outboard. Top speed 25 knots.

22 ft Wellcraft Vstep cuddy cabin. A small fishing boat with a 150 gallon live well, small toilet and cabin, inboard 350ci Mercruiser. Top speed approx 40 knots.

26 ft wellcraft speedboat, kitchen, vberth twin 454 mercs. top speed 75+ knots

12 foot Sunfish sailboat

2 kayaks, 3 jet skis, and a rowboat or two.

I'll take pics of the rest of them ASAP. Jeez I'm glad we live on the water......

Here are some of my picture's, from our little fishing boat, Forty Winks (Hardy 24 Fisher), the predecessor (So to speak) of Mary Elizabeth. I have mixed emotions on the subject, its a very long story too, main reason is that dad says she's too slow. and Thus dad bought Forty Winks for her speed really/Deck Space.

Some picture's from the lock out.

we're probably going to take our wooden boat up in our boathouse and wash some of the dirt off soon, then it should go some faster than it does now.

It's nice weather here, and I was going to go out this weekend.

But the new carburetor and thermostat I've been waiting for (port-side engine) has just turned up. So I'm going to spend some time fitting that and tuning it up.

I think it should add about 30% more thrust to that engine (it's been lower than it should be ever since I bought the boat).

I rebuilt the engines last year and am still running them in. Also, making a few improvements (like the new carbs). At the moment we keep the speed down to about 30kts, but once everything is run in, we should get about 45kts.

Not as fast as the last one (60kts), but she is larger and cuts through the waves nicely, so we can go out in heavier seas, which I enjoy.

The last one was even faster. 60 kts.

That was the one I shot those videos from (2 hours on the Solent) last year. I think you could get the feel of the speed in some of the sequences. Like when we overtook some of the fastest boats that the Royal Navy possesses!

Don't know off-hand, but before I turbo-charged them, they were 320 HP each. You can probably work out ccs from that...  ;) It will be in litres, though.

I haven't yet worked out the new power levels though.

They're petrol, by the way.
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: Minime on May 30, 2009, 01:38:24
petrol? Must be spending ALOT of "oil" and two of them. Wasn't sure if you use litrers or gallons to measure the size.
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: TerryRussell on May 30, 2009, 08:22:37
On a good run (on the plane, except for the first and last 8 miles through the harbour, flat seas, etc) we get about 2 miles to the gallon.

Engine sizes are in cc. The rest are in Imperial for me.

Hehehe    HOw long is yours in feet if possible

The top deck is 36 feet long. The LOWL is about 27 feet.

I only understand feet, miles and so on. Metric measurements came in after I passed my teens so it isn't ingrained into me.

I was out on the M/S Grand Prize again today! ;D

Good weather? It was wonderful here. So of course my boat was having the new carbs fitted and I couldn't go out. Humph!

Nice boat you have there Terry, There's one here in Fleetwood (Me and dad were just talking to the guy actually) that's just being sold (In a deal) exactly like yours, same model, by the looks of it.

I think me and you have different tastes in speed, I like the "Plodders" like Colvic, IP etc. *bup bup bup 8 knots out of Fleetwood*

Nice boat Terry!

Jack.

Post by: Minime on June 03, 2009, 18:01:20
I like to vary between slow and fast, our wooden boat only makes about 8 knots, but it feels faster though, I love that boat, but then again I like to sail with our 28 knots boat and play a bit. Also very cool to see how much difference the flaps can do, felt like the boat was almost capsizing when we tested them, much more sensitive than the old flaps.
here's a pic of the flaps http://www.panbo.com/ql_boat_trim_small.jpg

Post by: TerryRussell on June 03, 2009, 18:18:30
Hi Jack.

Just because I have a fast boat now, don't think that I always do that. I have had some plodders in my time.

A few years ago, I bought the Yardmaster's boat from Nelson. The Nelsons were a a good range of boats, often used by Harbourmasters and Tug crews etc. Real workhorses.

It had a 50HP Perkin Elmer diesel. The tank was full when I got it and was pretty much full after about 800 miles later. It did about 8 kts.

It bobbed up and down a lot in rough seas, but I knew it was safe.

But one of my favourite boats was "Petit Bluer". It was 14ft, with a 4HP outboard. I could launch it from a trailer on the back of my car and be off within a few minutes, having parked the car. I went all over the Solent and  round the Isle of Wight in that, at about 4kts  all the way.

It was basically just a big rowing boat. Sometimes (when I ran out of fuel 10 miles from home) I rowed it long distances.

27ft cool nice boat those get going the speed on yours is something like 35 right
The boat I work listed above (I think) Has a 4 ft draft  two 1000 hp engines and gets about 30 knots
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: TerryRussell on June 04, 2009, 23:12:52
Once I get the engines run in, 35 should be a comfortable cruising speed.

Although it is 27 feet along the waterline, boats in the UK are cunningly designed to minimise that figure. Everywhere you go, someone pops up out of nowhere and charges you for accessing their particulat stretch of water. All charges are calculated on LOWL.

If you think of a typical 32 foot boat in the USA, it would be similar inside to a 27 foot boat here. (My brother-in-law in Florida has a 32 foot vessel. It feels almost identical inside to my alleged 27 foot boat).

Ah Ha here we use LOA (length over all) hence the boat that I was chatting about before is 57 waterline but then 61 LOA which includes the bow and other crap we say 57 when paying for it in a marina  But when talking about it we say 61

I made a video but its so short it wasn't worth uploading. Anyone else have interesting encounters? ::) Pic 3 is the master captain himself ;D

Second - A view of the gates

Third- View out the port side of other yachts and fishing boats waiting to be let out (Like us)!

Thanks the black boat is owned by a family friend.
even though it only has a 10hp engine it actually sails quite fast, not sure how fast though.
ah the boat was named after you (i'd assume) nice boats and boat house ;)
yes it was named after me, because of all the effort I put in it. basically rebuilt everything beside the hull, even parts of the hull are replaced.

Wow thats cool 10hp just seemed a bit low (we have a blower that has 5hp lol) But hey if it works it does I know someone with a Zodiak inflatable with I think a 40 Hp on it and that is overkill

well it's no speed boat, but fast for the size of the boat and the engines size.

This one has 15 HP on the shaft, i`m not sure if it's the orginal engine or if they replaced it because of the lower fuel consumption. This one is in excellent condition, it's for sale for €21.000..

For me she doenst have to be in this condition, as long as the hull and engine are in good condition. Welding and working with steel is a subject at nautical college, and having a engineer as father is also a big plus  ;D

Sabb  :D

I know a story of the Sabb engine:

A fisherman had a sabb once, his boat went down some day, but as the boat kept going deeper and deeper for the bottom, the fisherman could still here the Sabb engines stroke as it kept going to the bottom ;D

It would be nice if that was a true story. But the first intake of air into the piston would be water, and the engine would stop dead immediately. Two reasons:

(1) You can't get diesel or petrol to ignite when it is mixed with water.

(2) Both sides of the piston would be surrounded by water. At least one of the pistons would be in the compression part of the cycle. You can't compress water. So it jams immediately.

Nice bit of old wive's tale for Saab, though.  ;)

Hi Matt,

Actually, that's and Outdrive, or leg. You do have an inboard motor, but, insted of having prop and shaft, you have an outdrive insted. They are often used to get higher performance, as the traditional Prop and Shaft don't have as much "UMPH". But they do have their own problems too, parts are expensive to replace, you need power to turn in enclosed spaces etc.

Nice pics Anfinn! We had something similar with regards to "Laws" on the boat on our old one. You see in my signature? Near the bottom? I copied it from that onto here

Jack.

ah I see it Jack, nice message. actually boats outdrives or sterndrives, not sure if they are called do handle very nicely in port, you just need to know it very well. That's my opinion atleast. I'm gonna upload a video soon, of our boat going full speed ahead.

I had my boat taken out of the water on Tuesday and re-antifouled. It went back in yesterday (Thursday) and

I'm going for a race up the Solent later today (Friday). Leaving Chichester Marina at about 10:30. High tide is around 14:00, so coming back and going through the lock on freeflow at about 16:00, Iexpect.
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: Master Captain on July 10, 2009, 02:13:27
let me through my 2 cents in about outdrives and outboards and inboards and so on ::) Theres a difference between an outboard and an outdrive. The outboard is when the whole engine and drive system is 1 complete unit. An outdrive or stern drive is the outer part of the drive system, the engine is in the board, this system is called an I/O or inboard/outboard. Then theres the inboard system with engine inside and just a prop and shaft.
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?

Gas? Those are Diesel Powered ;) And running full speed it uses 160 Gallons Per Hour  :o Yea quite a bit she cruises at 25knots I think which is decent for that size of a boat   It takes umm 1300 Gallons Total and its 61,000 lbs (27,699kg) So decent size

Oh By the way it is for sale at $2.2million american But he is workable when it comes to the price (meaning he probably will accept lower) BUT it will be hard for him to sell it because some of the wood is cracked and there are a few other minor issues  :-\ So that would be great if he is unable to sell it and bring it back up here to ny it is currently in the Marlow Shipyard in Tampa.

I work (Mostly) with Princess Yachts, which are similar to the marbella delight but most of them have flybridges.
the company I work at (on work experience) fits aftermarket items such as passerelles and tenders e.t.c. as well as ship repairs.

When a boat is launched i usually help out as a deckhand, so i get little tasters of being at sea. I also occasionally get to drive the company's Zodiac.

In future years, i'd like to be a delivery skipper or a harbour pilot, but i've got to get my Master's Certificate first :captain:

I wouldn't mind owning a boat, does that count?

ps my profile pic is of me on a Princess 21M.

Hehe, Lots of work!

But I bet it's all worth it, having the enjoyment of being able to go out on the boat. And plus, you get all the enjoyment of Summer with it, and you can work on it in winter. I think half the enjoyment of having a boat is looking after it, too!

lovely boat!

Thumping? I never hear thumping on the boats I go on lol.....Only the engines, well on the ferries when we go oer another vessels wake theres a loud thump when the wave hits between the Pontoons :P
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: Master Captain on October 06, 2009, 00:11:47
bigger boats and yachts dont do it and its harder to hear, small boats the keel is right under the floor... Its from hitting the waves you go in the air and smack the water coming back down, quite fun bouncing around
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: Capt. Matt on October 06, 2009, 00:18:53
Ohhh I know what your talking about......Yea you dont hear that on the yacht...the engines sorta take that sound over lol We heardf on our old speedboat a bit, although it wasnt as bad as it hit the cabin more but when we went 80 mph you heard it a bit :P On the little lakeboat you even see the floor push in a little bit lol
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: IRI5HJ4CK on October 06, 2009, 07:56:44
Yeah, You won't really hear thumping in a bigger, or, Heavy boat. Simply because the ballast is keeping you in the water, so you sit on the waves, rather than go up, then SLAP back down onto the next.

Also, How much a boat draws (Depth) can also be a factor, a boat that draws more water is generally heavier, and so, more boat is in the water. That way you have no slapping at all (Like Mary Elizabeth).

Whereas, take a boat like say, that's around a ton, maybe less, with not much depth, and a lot of speed - That's a boat that will slap around a bit. I can tell you that from a bit of experience between Forty Winks (The boat we have now) Compared to Mary. There's a big difference in a ton and 4.1 Tons.

Jack :)

I don't know how you spell it but I know what you mean, like how a car hydroplanes.
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: IRI5HJ4CK on October 07, 2009, 07:40:37
It varies I suppose, a boat with a deep vee hull and a high speed, e.g. a Flybridge cruiser may be capable of 30 Knots +, So it will plane on the water very well.

If you have a Semi Displacement Hull, then the hull will rise slightly on the plane, but not as much as say the Flybridge Cruiser ^^.

If you have a Displacement hull (Like Mary does), then you'll travel through the water, rather than on top of it. That, of course, will always make a boat slower, However, they'll always be good seaboats. And you won't  be tossed about as violently

Jack.

Lol, one time we were going 60 MPH, with most of the diving deck under water, and the plugs on the pumps (that I put in for the first time) came blowing out, the engine compartment blew upward, and we stopped so fast, the wake came up and over the entire boat.

F.Y.I. docking a jet boat in high winds/waves is hard! We had to get someone to come out to the dock and throw them ropes, neither me or my uncle could get the boat on the lift because we where moving sideways so fast, and you can't use allot of throttle at the dock because the pumps will suck sand up.

The Speed-o-meter on my boat with an upgraded engine goes up to 80Mph.  I know that you can do about that but I have not because out lake has a speed limit of 45.

45 MPH in a small boat is pretty fast anyway.

My boat goes a staggering 6mph in a moderate wind... Might even go faster if I knew how to sail it properly.

Post by: TerryRussell on October 08, 2009, 16:18:42
My last one (the one in the "2 hours on the Solent" videos on YouTube) would do about 60 Kts (65+ mph), but it was starting to snake at that point. At that speed, even small waves would cause it to leap from crest to crest, bone-jarringly!

The current boat (a 36 foot Sunseeker Gin Palace job) does a more sedate 45 Kts (50+ mph). It weighs several tons and does not leap the waves. It slides through them quite happily, so the drinks don't get spilled.

Been out in it in some fairly horrifying weather, rescuing some people off the Mixon rocks near Selsey. It was not a bad ride, even with 10-15ft waves around us. Didn't spill a drop!

OH I found out a little more about the boat, Its like a Cris Craft and it has 2 250 horsepower engines I think, and a generator, doesnt work, but that would be the first thing we fix but he just redid all of the plumming, gauges, a new radar, and rebuilt the engines and its a 1975 I think but my dad says it rins great, (Its a Friend of ours) And their moving, but since its so old nobody really wants it but we know how much work they did to it and that its in perfect codition, so either we buy it or they donate it so things are looking good ;D

Yea, well thats the thing with boating, like the yacht many people have the oopen upper flybridge for 2 reasons, they like being outside, and its cheaper, my dad had the option when the owner was building the yacht to get wither a Command Bridge or outside, he chose command bridge, So if your running inthe winter time you an have heat and be comfortable, and when theres waves when our in the ocean and the splash doesnt come towhere you are, because he has video of rough seas and the windows being pummeled with water

How o you find the time to sail it, between dashing over all continents on the planet, designing ss pro and moderating the forum. I take my hat off to you, I really do. I wish I could manage to find time myself...

Suddenly motor boats are starting to look more appealing than pratting about with wind and sails...
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: Minime on October 10, 2009, 22:46:35
looks very nice, but also looks much smaller than 32 feet, but that's just because of the type of the boat.

True enough... But can it cross hundreds of miles of sea on a tank of fuel? no... Well my boat can. I MUST admit though, as much as sails have their fun, a good diesel engine is nice for leaving port... I tried to leave the first time under sail and nearly smacked an expensive yacht.

I really must take sailing lessons.

they're not that difficult to drive, suprisingly! of course you can get bigger versions of those but I like this one because it weighs the least, is the smallest and therefore the fastest
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: Capt. Matt on October 11, 2009, 13:57:53
I went on one of them went the same speed, I was driving  in a shipping channel, not the wisest idea, but It was fun, It was a Zodiac with a 40hp Honda Outboard and hey stu our old boat may not be able to cross the ocean, but this can, Well I think
(http://i43.tinypic.com/15zh649.jpg)
It has a 1500 Gallon Tank, But youd need to stop somewhere :P At a small island or something lol

At 8 knots it uses 1 nautical Mile a gallon

At 28 knots it uses 90 GPH

Has 2 Caterpiller C-18's @ 1015 hp Each

Now theres a diesel engine for ya stu

Yeah.

I'm used to seeing boats and ships measured in feet, not metres. To me, my boat is a 32 foot Sunseeker, not a 10 metre Sunseeker.

10 metres sounds (to me) like a dinghy...

I agree so when I saw 800 Im like an 80 footer...someones got money haha  But of all "Average sized" and "Average Cost" boats to own Id say a Carver or a sea ray for me....To go into millions Id say a Viking, Hatteras or Marlow........Multi Millions WESTPORT 112 or 130  :2thumbs: Beautiful boats (In feet remember  :P )

well I'm used to both, if I talk about our boat "Norðbúgvin" I'd say she's 27 foot, but if I talk about "Lukka" I say she's 8 meters.

Jack, now don't forget about your OTHER boat. Which I also seem to have.

She's a little old, built in the '70s by my late grandfather (was that grammatically correct?  ???) and I'm renovating her now.. well, now is a big word as she hasn't sailed for 2 years now. She isn't quite correct to the drawings as well, but only jack will notice I guess ;)

Have you ever seen the 'model' boats in Peasholm Park, Scarborough... All about 20ft long and take a human inside (or a very close approximation to one ;D )

Mock naval battles... Good fun, but since the enemy is now fictitious, it takes some of the fun away

Hi Devin,

That is a ready made model, sold at about £40 quid If I remember rightly.

They run on gell batteries in a pack.

I've seen a few sailing.

Yep well thats What i got Haha :)

Wish i had a Container Ship, anyone know anylinks to one?

Buts she dosnt run anymore, She Capsized in the Middle of the Fountain, not a wishing well type fountain like a gigantic 100ft by 100ft fountain
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: IRI5HJ4CK on December 13, 2009, 09:58:47
If you want my honest opinion,

They aren't Ballast right..They are too light. Obviously because the model itself is mainly made up of plastic, there isn't any weight in the model itself...Thus they have very poor "Sea" keeping properties..

The gell batteries do not last long either unfortunately.

Jack.
P.S. I've seen a few Container Ship Models, but never a ready build...Sorry.

Hi Devin,

That is a KIT. That means you get some parts, however, you have to built it all yourself..

Also, They do not supply any electronics. So you'd probably end up with a long shopping bill...

My advice to you is, if you are honestly interested in model boats...Go and see if you can find anything locally...Or if it it means you have to travel a bit to see a boat, it is always better than buying anything online, because you can see it up close.

Always ask questions too...And ask for a test run, if they do not suggest one. The seller will want to convince you as much as possible (obviously), but if he/she doesn't seem to want to tell you something, or is not keen on the idea of putting it in the water...Keep away...

There is a lot you can cover up on a boat.

Jack.

If you are building that one, i would place the bow- and stern thruster as for as possible in the bow and the stern to create a larger momentum.

nice model though, anyway. Matt you better have deep pockets to keep that boat running. 41 foot boat with 2 454 chevy big block engines at 350HP people go nuts when i tell them that, and when i tell them it has a 375 gallon fuel tank they just drop dead. so have fun...  :P

you people have weird engines, over here there are no V engines in the boats mostly normal volvos, straight 6 I think.
I've seen the model volvo penta d6 in many boats here, never any V engines.

My dad has a boat down in Dover (we live up North now, in Lincolnshire) called the Sulac. It's a 30ft Moody Yacht (now outdated by a 31ft version) made in the 70s in Gosport/Plymouth (locations of parts, I've forgotten where she was actually finished, one of those two places). He bought her for the lovely, good value sum of about £3000, and she was well worth it! About 8kn (MAX!). 25hp BETA Marine inboard engine put in a few years ago. Beautiful hull (concrete I think). Two sails. Sleeps 2/3. Gas, cooking, water, toilet..... Usual. She sounds like a Transit van sort of.... LOVE HER! Of course, I'm at the helm most of the time, while Skipper's up for'd doing sommats with Number 1 (who is usually his good friend Ian Keyser from Whitfield if it's not just the two of us).
Picture of what she looks like: (VAGUELY, this is NOT my dad's boat, it's not even a Moody but she looks similar)

She looks very much like our old boat!

Sabb as well!! We had a Sabb 2.2, would go forever!

What type of boat is she? She wouldn't happen to be a Colvic by any chance?

Or is she a home build entirely?

Jack.

I noticed that it havn't been posted for a while here, so I'm sorry to the moderators/administrators if it wasn't ment to be "re-opend"..

But I've got great news! (Mainly for myself though ;D

Today we bought a new boat! Not a big fancy yacht, but a nice Yamarin 50 SCS with Yamaha's four stroke 60 HP. Goes about 30-35 knots :) And now that i have turned 16 and have the boat certificate (it's requierd here in Norway) I'm allowed to drive it aswell, these kinds of boats have been my favorite all along and today the dream got real! :)

Once again, sorry for ripping off in an old topic but I just had to share it ;D

LOL one of the boats we went to view had bow and stern thrusters - on a remote control as well!! So if the boat got away from you on the pontoon you could bring it back alongside without being on it!
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: Ballast on July 25, 2010, 09:36:37
That's almost something you need with high speed vessels. They are fitted with a relative small rudder surface, to make the vessel more course stable on higher speeds, otherwise it would look like a drunk skipper that's driving the boat  :P. The downside of a small rudder surface is that it's pretty hard to maneuver, you need alot of pressure on the rudder thus more trottle on the main engines.

Well we've had her over a year now, Dayskipper practical completed early this year. We've had two runs to Scarborough (East coast UK) from Hull, our longer trip to Lowestoft and Ijmuiden had to be aborted due to illness and a poorly engine.

She goes well, though at full throttle she uses 97 litres per hour... per engine!  :o We've just filled the tanks yesterday having done 207nm since last fill, mostly at slower speed but still needed 1000+ litres @£1.15/litre.

Photo shows her at Scarborough at Easter - the passage was to be Hartlepool but dense fog curtailed the trip.

I love working on them, you get the enjoyment of going out on it, while getting payed!  :2thumbs: Especially when the owners are nice.

As Salty said, owning a boat isn't always the best. We sold our boat, it cost over 10k just for docking fees. She was 41 feet or about 14 metres (I think)

Look on the top right, we get the perks

Oh and don't take offense to the picture, I didn't think it's too explicit. But to keep this topic clean we'll chat in cookie box.

Old member, new(ish) boat.

I've joined the Maritime Volunteer Service, a uniformed service providing seamanship and engineering training, as well as event support and providing a support emergency service at stations all around the UK.

Here's our regional craft, MVS Curlew. She's an ex customs launch, with twin Perkins diesels. Cruises at 8kn.

Of course we also have a RIB for flood rescue, and as a tender for Curlew.

Nope. Hasn't been in swansea since the previous owner bought her. For the last couple of years she's not been much further than Plymouth.

She's a Beneteau Antares 700p, so you may have seen a sister vessel ;)

First pic I'm just winding us up from a stop, other photos at nearly full chat.  8)

I'm still alive!

Just thought I'd pop by and share some more pictures of 'my' boat. There's a fairly uninteresting picture of her on the last page. On Saturday I went out with the camera and got some more interesting shots ;)

There are some pictures of my fine self driving the RIB the pictures are taken from, but I haven't gotten hold of them yet!

(She is steaming a bit, half due to the fact that she's sprinting, and half due to the fact that the port engine needs the exhaust seawater injection pipe clearing)

Nice starboard chair. And a wooden wheel with knobs! You don't see those anymore.
Title: Re: Do you have your own real boat/vessel?
Post by: McGherkin on February 06, 2013, 00:56:26
Unfortunately the starboard chair damage, and quite a lot of other damage to her, was caused by a college who were allowed use of her when she was with another unit. She was absolutely wrecked when she was taken out of their hands.

The exhaust gases had burnt a hole in the pipe, which meant that water entering through the pipes in the stern simply flowed straight into the bilge. The boat was left for several weeks meaning that the batteries went flat and the bilge pumps stopped functioning, so she ended up being half full of water. If she hadn't been rescued when she was, she'd have sunk soon after.

There's plenty left to do with her, but at the moment the primary goal is to get her operational so we can respond to incidents. Next thing is MCA coding, and then we can start to worry about little things like the condition of the chairs

At least you have a boat.

Sigh, once I found a sailboat for sail at Canal Park in great condition at an affordable price, but I don't know how to sail... also I don't have a license. :P
