Hi guys,
I took a look at the members list recently and noticed that there are hundreds of users, yet probably not even a quater of the lot there are actually there on mp or here on the forum.
I wonder why?
I'm going to try and make a pie chart or bar chart (some sort of chart anyway :D) to show the exact number of people who are what i'd call "active members" of the forum and mp community and how many who are not "active members", any technical ideas on how i could do that? i could do a rough estimate but i don't know if it would be fantastic, so i'd rather have a "professional figure" to lay out in front of you.
Jack.

Hiya Jack :)
This method may work for you:
http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php?action=mlist;sort=posts;start=0
That's the members listed in order of post count, from the full members list ;)
Regards.
Carl.

Wow, thanks i'll use that ;)
P.S. i just looked, i'm not doing bad considering half of my time here was cut off by a technical issue (which is now resolved) i couldn't do anything at the forum, all the buttons etc. were lifeless. Very annoying. :) oh well, i'm in buisness now haha

Right, just done a quick look and at a rough guess i'd say only 160 members (a rounded figure) of the forum are actually what i'd call "active" and who i see most often. That may be even less when i come down to a proper figure.
and thats out of of 23373 total members!
so even if i am off by a few dozen, it still means that for the amount of people who register and the amount of people who actually use the forum and MP is very very very low.
-
there are 93 pages of (30) users that have at least 1 post. From a total of 780 pages.
-
Thats a good list, now we are able to see who's most active on the forum.

How many people do you think just register to play multiplayer but never post?
Although I hardly ever see anyone on MP i haven't heard of.

I have mentioned in other posts that you rarely see people in MP these days, and the situation is even worse now that there are so many private servers available.
Of course, the fact that the weather is slightly better and the evenings longer may also have something to do with it.

You could be right, but i think in a sence the server software wasn't a good idea, i did say this before it came out that because there would be so many server (which there are now) people would be spread out accross all of them, its just not the same as it used to be. I remember when i used to constantly tug people in and out of marseille, that was before new horizons was released, i'm talking a long time ago. The server used to be stuffed full with people, litrally stuffed, i haven't seen a server with more than 10 players in ages :'( very sad. I did warn people this would happen.

Well, I'm up there in the top 4 it seems. Strange as I've only been active since about November. I guess if the system counted actual words posted, I might be highly placed....
-
Hehe, same here Terry, I registered about the same time you did.. ;D
So it's not thát strange.. I guess we're just not the silent types.. :)
Fred

It's not the volume but the quality that counts...........

Agreed. That is why another forum I am on gives you 'points' instead of posts and it counts how many words/letters/sentences is in your message instead of 'posts'. I thought the idea was good.
Although it is always nice to post a bit on random off-topic stuff. It is fun, just do it in a random off-topic, topic. :P
-
yes with word counts a cuple of very long posts and you would be high on the chart

#1 [RWP]DJM (1,000,000 Points)
#2 Terry Russell (800,000 Points)
#3 That fred guy (200 points)
:P
I feel left out of this scenario.
-
well your ahead of me on posts
-
well your ahead of me on posts
And you also registered 1 year 3 days after I did. ::)
-
yes that could be why
-
And Agent|Austin's posts tend to be longer than one sentence, pauljanaway1 . (A big hint, there)
Yeah, I know. I'm nagging... ;)
But seriously, my personal belief is that the number of actual posts is meaningless. I wouldn't have any objections if the count got switched off, given all of the people who seem determined to abuse it (that's my own view, not official policy).
I "rate" people (in my mind) based upon the usefulness and interest generated by their posts. You could post lots of meaningless single sentence messages and end up with a negative rating in my eyes...
-
but somtimes the answer to a question dose not require a page of wrighting some questoins a simple answer of maybe a cuple of words is better and an answer of a page dont you argree
-
Very True PJ
-
an exanple of such a question would be can "i dowload more ships like flight sim" where it is best to give a short but clear answer as they might be new and not understand all the jargon
-
True.
But one person started a thread today inviting people to make single word posts just to boost the number of posts.
Don't you think that was just really spoiling this for all of the real posters?
Also, several people were/are involved in a competition to boost their post counts by making very short posts that didn't add anythin to this forum. They had a number of tactics for doing this.
Don't you think those people were also letting everyone else down?
But don't worry!
I know exactly who was involved in all of these things, and I will be keeping a close eye on them, to make sure that they don't ruin the enjoyment of everyone else.
-
yes we are both right makeing short post is ok but as long as they bring new infomation or ideas to the group
and yes i did see the post boosting forum
