Title: Lots of Newbie Questions and a few Wish List items
Post by: Barnacle on June 08, 2008, 17:07:26
I’m a real newbie to Ship Simulator.  I downloaded the demo version, ran the demo mission a couple of times…and bought the program.  I printed the User Guide and reviewed it, then took a deep breath and started the program.

I started with a free roaming session.  I chose the harbor tug, New York Harbor, and a bland but pleasant day with no wind and excellent visibility.  I steamed to the Statue of Liberty, rounded it to port, and tried to tie up at the dock.  Then I pulled away from the pier and tried to anchor.

I came up with a bunch of questions, a couple of comments, and a couple of wish-list items.  They’re listed below (in no particular order:  the numbers are for reference).

Definitions needed
There are a number of terms and acronyms I don’t understand and can’t find definitions for in the Ship Simulator 2008 User Guide:
1.   On the Information Panel at the right of the compass:  CTW (Course to Waypoint?), TWD and AWD.
2.   Precision Steering
3.   What is the difference between rotating the camera and panning it?

I’m sure there are others, but I haven’t noticed them yet.
Questions and Observations

I’m enjoying the program.  I know I’ve asked a lot of questions but if you could answer them or point me to the answers I’d be grateful.

Good sailing!

  • 1.  I couldn’t get to the Helmsman’s view with the mouse wheel.  (I found it with the 1 key.)  Is this a documentation error?
  • 2.  The binoculars work in Helmsman’s View only.  Shouldn’t they work in the external view?
Yes, Binoculrs only work in the Helmsman / Internal view only

  • 3.  I couldn’t move the chart or resize it except to make it full screen.  (I was able to zoom in and out.)  This may be a wish list item, but it would be very nice to be able to place the chart anywhere on the screen and make it whatever size I wanted it.

You can only zoom in and out, there is not an option to make the chart bigger

  • 5.  I couldn’t move my starting position or current position, or speed up the simulator to get there faster.  Is there a way to do those things?

No your unable to speed up the simulator.  Its made to be as relastic as it can be
  • 10.  I took several pictures, but I can’t find them.  I am running the program from a second hard drive, my D disk, but there is no Program Files\Vstep\ShipSim2008 Pictures folder. There is a Vstep folder under Program Files on my C disk, but there’s nothing in it. What happened and how can I make sure I get the next pictures I take?

Your picturs are found under My Documents / ShipSim 2008 UserData / Picuturs

  • 9.  I couldn’t turn off the music that plays incessantly while I was setting up my mission.  Is there a way to turn it off?

Go to Options > Sound and turn down the GUI option and that turns of the background music for the game

Thanks, Goodles.  I appreciate the answers, and I found my pictures...the location given in the documentation is wrong and I hope they'll update the manual soon.

As for the questions you didn't answer...I wonder if there's anybody around who would like to take a crack at them?

Good sailing!

  • 2.  The binoculars work in Helmsman’s View only.  Shouldn’t they work in the external view?

If you press the '3' key on most vessels you will be able to move about on the ship. On the larger ships it is handy if you walk out on the bridge wing, you can use the binoculars in this mode. There are controls for steering and engine power on the bridge wings and so you get a clear view and full control.

  • 3.  I couldn’t move the chart or resize it except to make it full screen.  (I was able to zoom in and out.)  This may be a wish list item, but it would be very nice to be able to place the chart anywhere on the screen and make it whatever size I wanted it.

This is a wish list item. You can get rid of all on screen info by pressing 'TAB' and get it back again in the same way. I think that most people would agree with you that it would be handy to be able to reposition the chart.

  • 4.  The ship is always in the center of the chart, which lost all texts (labels would be a better word in English) when I zoomed out, before I could see Liberty Island.  I could see the Statue of Liberty in the external view, and simply steered for it.  But suppose it had been dark, or foggy?

If, (in a mission), it is dark or foggy then you have to take particular notice of any messages that you get at each waypoint. The message may tell you to take a particular heading or other information.

  • 5.  I couldn’t move my starting position or current position, or speed up the simulator to get there faster.  Is there a way to do those things?

You can't put the ship on 'autopilot' or 'x256 time' at the moment as all the harbour and ocean areas are small. Who knows what will happen in the 2009/2010 version.

  • 8.  When I got to the pier at Liberty Island I tried to moor, but wasn’t able to because, I suppose, there were no mooring points on the pier.  When I tried to anchor a bit later I was unable to do so.  I did see a little red X near the bow of the ship.  Did that mean I was anchored?

If there are no bollards then you can't moor. The little red x does mean that you have anchored.

  • 11.  This is definitely a wish list item:  I’d like the ability to run the simulation in a window instead of in full screen mode.

You can run the simulator 'windowed' by going into the game;
Goto [Main Menu>Options>Graphics] and tick the box at the top left labelled [Run Windowed], the next time you start the simulator it will be in a window. This is not recommended apparently but I did it for a couple of days and it worked with no problems.

Item 12 is a wish list item.

When you start doing the ingame missions then be aware that there are about 7 missions that can't be completed. If you do a search on their names in 'Missions' then you will see an explanation or an alternative to that mission.

If you like ships and controlling them as much as I do then you will enjoy this simulator. :)

Best regards, Dave

Dave, I don't know how much you like ships and controlling them, but I could sail before I could walk...that was many, many years ago, and I've enjoyed boats and ships ever since.  I am enjoying the simulator, learning how to handle the various vessels in Free Roaming mode, using NY Harbor as my environment because that's the one I'm most familiar with--and having a great time.  When as and if I learn how to handle these ships I'll take a wack at the missions and even multiplayer.

Thanks for answering my questions!

Goodles, most of my last applies to your message too.

I have V1.4.2, Build 1038.  Do I need the patch too?

Thanks again,

Hi Barnacle and welcome to the game and the forum.

I think most of your questions have already been answered, but "precision steering" is a setting that makes the controls "sticky". That is, if you turn the helm to starboard and let go then the wheel stays there. If you put the throttle ontrol forward (or backwards) and let go, it stays there.

That can be useful if you steer using the keyboard controls (as I often do). People either love it or hate it, apparently.

If you have V1.4.2 that is "the" patch (currently - Vstep spend a lot of time improving the game and releasing free updates)

Hi Barnacle/ 1 of 16,
I was born and brought up in Portsmouth UK, so I have been around boats/ships since I was about 8, (not as long as you it seems), and I love them.

Hi  O exalted one ;D, I have never tried the 'sticky' option, that sounds as if it might be useful for the 'Red Cat' controls.

TWD is True Wind Direction
AWD is Apparent Wind Direction

Hi Barnacle,
The difference between rotating and panning depends upon context. In cinematography, panning is usually done by rotating the camera. In the simulator, panning is lateral movement normal to the lens—or viewpoint—axis, accomplished via the L&R arrow keys in walkabout mode.
Rotation about a vertical axis through the camera—or viewpoint—is done by dragging the mouse.

Marty

LucAtc... Thanks for solving the mystery!

mvsmith... I was in video for a number of years, so I'm familiar with panning.  Never have heard the term rotation, though, so thanks for giving me the answer!  (Maybe they should have called it elevation instead of rotation.)

Lord High & Mighty here. I will permit you lowly Earthlings to communicate with me on this bright and sunny day, but you must understand that this is a privilege not a right... Heh heh.

I use it with all the large vessels. No use with the jetski, great for Freedom 90. On Red Eagle and Bugsier I find it a plus as well.

Steering oar?

Why, when I was a boy they would throw me over the stern and I would have to swallow 50 gallons of water and eject it out of another orifice to steer the ship.

You don't know you're born these days. (Monty Python?esque).

Oh dear, long way off topic now. Sorry.

Barnacle, I use a Saiko game ad. It's got twin yokes (one for each engine) and about 14 buttons, and 16 further buttons arragned in two sets of circles (for directional "clicking"). With that lot, I can assign a unique buton for almost every action. Using the settings/controls menu in Ship Simulator, you can easily program each button to perform a secific action.

Or, you can set up the gamepad itself to "pretend" to be a particular keyboard press. So between the two menus, you can do anything, I think.
Title: Re: Lots of Newbie Questions and a few Wish List items
Post by: Barnacle on June 11, 2008, 21:10:57
Terry,  thanks.  Not sure what a "Saiko gem ad" (Seko game pad?) is, but I'll look it up.  Thing is, what we need is a gearshift lever.  You know: push and you're going ahead, pull and you're in neutral, pull more and you're going astern.  Then two buttons or two throttle controls (CH Products makes 'em for aircraft) would do the trick.

Got lost in your dialect. :O)  Reminds me of when we were in a third floor flat in Yorkshire...no problem communicating with the landlord, but I heard him (three floors down) talking to a workman.  It was loud enough, but I couldn't understand a word they were saying!

I think it was Winston Churchill who said that the US and the UK are "two countries divided by a common language."  Now if you'd only learn to drive on the right side of the street...

Hi.

New brains please Matron. I meant Saitek. Sorry. Been working with a technical client today and one of their suppliers is Saiko.

And yes, I meant game pad. I've had a problem with my keyboard recently. Every now and again it was highlighting text and deleting part of it as I was typing. Keyboard is now pushing up daisy roots!

My Yorkshireman impression is quite good, I think. Considering I am a Southerner, through and through (Portsmouth is "up north" as far as I'm concerned), anyway.

Hi Barnacle,
There was a topic a while ago about making your own controller, it's here,
http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,4503.0.html ,
but I think there was a problem when it came to controlling 'Bugsier 2'.
Terry has had a problem with his 'P' for a while but I didn't like to mention it. ;)

Hi Terry,

At last...some competetion for the Worst Typist in the World!  I thought I had the title hands down, but you're creeping up on me. ;O)  And having been a technical writer for many years, I understand what a session with a technical client can do to you.  I hope they pay you a lot.

My Yorkshireman impression is limited to the phrase "And doant go inta the poob!"  It is a recommendation uttered by a convenience store clerk when we were asking directions to Harrogate.  We ignored it, of course, and had a very nice pint.  And eventually we found Harrogate.  It was a bit blurry, but we found it.

I wanted to go to Portsmouth and Falmouth, being a follower of Captain Jack Aubrey, Horatio Hornblower, and Richard Bolitho.  But it didn't happen. <sigh>

I will now go look up "Saitek Gamepad."  :O)

Hi Dave,

No, I wouldn't mention it.  There are those of us on this side of the pond who, with advancing age, have developed problems with their P.  I won't mention any names either, and I don't think the number of pints one has consumed over the course of a long and misspent life has anything to do with it.

But I'll take a look at the forum topic you mentioned, and I thank you!

Well, I will confess to being stupid enough to slam my own hand in the car door a few days ago. Combined with a lunatic keyboard, getting the words out correctly has been a bit of a struggle recently.

I know Harrogate well. Far too many hills for when you come out of the pub!

But I only live a few miles from Dave, so will go round and feed him to the fishes shortly.

I haven't had any problems when using a controller with Bugsier, but then I'm not so much of a rivet counter that I would care if it works exactly as it does in real life (very few harbour boats will be operated while sat in my house, anyway). If you use the configuration program with the gamepad to make it send keypresses, then Bugsier will work fine, in my experience.

Or you can set up SS08 to recognise the inputs from the gamepad, but in some vessels there will be a need to tweak things around.

Hi Terry,

Sorry about the hand.  You probably said, "Oh, I don't think I'll do that again."  Or something. :O)

I've downloaded the PDF from the thread Dave linked to.  (Glad he got that post up before you fed him to the fishes.)  Not sure I'm man enough any more to do all that soldering, but you never know.  Personally, I think the kid ought to make it a commercial product.

Hi Barnacle,
If my memory serves me right, (it has been a long time since I read the 'Bolitho' books), he got outfitted with his officers uniform at 'The Hard' in Portsmouth at an establishment called 'Gieves & ?'. If that is the case then the 'Naval tailors' was still in business about 8 years ago and may still be there, (I'm in Management now and all I see is a computer monitor).

Falmouth, I worked on the 'Pride of Bilbao' for two years and she used to have her yearly refit there. Unfortunately, because the ship was dry whilst in service, when we got to 'Falmouth' everything went a bit hazy. I remember a couple of trees in the high street that I bumped in to but apart from that, (and the local 'Accident and Emergency' hospital), not a thing!

Dave,  your memory is better than mine!  But Bolitho spent a lot of time in Portsmouth, as did everybody in the British Navy (and I guess they still do).  And of course he came from Falmouth.  The south of England has always drawn me simply because it was the womb of the British Navy.  Maybe I'll get a chance to see it someday.... I sure hope so!

The South is the "Womb of the Navy"! That's a frightening thought as I look out of my window just off the coast in Selsey.

Which bit of the States does your window look out onto? Is it as frightening?

Hi Terry,

I'm about an hour by car from the coast of North Carolina.  I go there to supervise the surf whenever I can.  In a little under two hours I can be at the Port of Wilmington, NC; in about four hours I can be in Charleston, SC, and it takes me about eight hours (including a 2-hour ferry ride) to get to the Outer Banks of North Carolina--Cape Hatteras, Kitty Hawk, and all that.  But I grew up in Long Island, sailing on Long Island Sound, and I lived for many years in Dallas, Texas, where I sailed on the local lakes.  Now I'm retired and a bit stove in, so I satisfy myself by riding ferries, taking harbor tours, looking at boats...and sailing via simulator.

Scary?  Nah.  I've lived in Norfolk, VA.  Now that's scary!

My wife (who is a Jersey Girl) says that if someone from Long Island thinks that Norfolk is a scary place, then they must be from Suffolk or possibly Queens.  ;D
Title: Re: Lots of Newbie Questions and a few Wish List items
Post by: Barnacle on June 12, 2008, 22:20:31
Hmmm... which Jersey does your wife come from?  I've heard there's one in England; there's one in the US too, just south of New York State.  I knew a fellow who moved from New York to New Jersey and raised the average IQ of both states.  ;D

When I was a kid (several years ago) I had a summer job teaching sailing in Suffolk County, Long Island.  It was kind of in the boonies, but I suppose it has become more sophisticated since.   :-\

I actually lived in Queens (Long Island, NY) for a year.  It took two busses and a subway (and over an hour) to get to work in midtown Manhattan.  It also took an hour or so to drive where you wanted to go, e.g., anywhere not in Queens. The part I lived in was...um...bland, but has no doubt acquired juvenile gangs, etc. since.

I lived in Norfolk for three years or so (at least my wife did--I was on a ship most of the time).  The place is jammed with large, grey, steel things with cannons and stuff on most of them, and people who were more interested in whether your shoes were shiny than anything else.

Yup, Norfolk was scary.  Very much like Plymouth, UK, I assume. :D

My wife would say "New ***** Jersey".

We met in NY City a few years ago and she followed me home, so I had to keep her. I'm told that I get a Congressional Medal of Honour for removing a Jersey Girl from the USA.

PS having told me wife your joke, some of the scenes in "Sopranos" will come true soon. I thnk she has Mikey and Vinny out looking for you. Watch out.

Also, the folks in Jersey here will be after you, but in a much more gentlemanly way. They will drink tea at you for a while and discuss you loudly. That will teach you a lesson!

Strange as it may seem, Jersey is not part of England. It isn't even part of the Common Market. It is part of the UK though.

To get there from England, I have to go through Customs, but not through Immigration. Their money is different although they happily take UK dosh.

They have their own parliament and their own laws. Like the USA they don't have a national health service (you pay for medical treatment).

They speak English but most of their roads have very French sounding names.

Hi Terry,

It's true that you get a Congressional Medal of Honor for removing a NJ girl from the US...the catch is you have to go to Washington DC and shake George Bush's hand to get it.  I don't know anybody who's willing to do that.  I've heard there are some such people, but "one doesn't know them."

As far as Mickey and Vinny are concerned, I can handle them.  Not only did I live in Texas for a number of years, but I know how to spell their names.  ;)  Not so sure I can handle the chaps from Jersy, UK however.  "No, no..don't point that cup at me!"  Probably couldn't understand the dialect anyway.

In this part of the country, BTW, when you ask for tea you get a large glass full of ice with some sweet tea poured into it.  West of the Mississippi you get a large glass full of ice with some un-sweetened tea poured over it.  (If you ask for sweet tea they point to the packets of sugar.)  In ***** Jersey (and other Yankee places) you get a little pot with warm water and a tea bag.

Hi Barnacle,
The program will only update your profile online if, (in game), you go to;
Main Menu>Profile
At the bottom of the 'Profile' window is a small box,
[ ] Allow internet access.

If you don't check that box then the game doesn't update your profile online, (also you will not be able to go into multiplayer).

Llamalord seems to be a bit paranoid about this but..........
Lets face it, the act of posting on this forum would give anyone who is interested, enough information, (your IP address), to do whatever they want unless you have some form of Firewall/AntiVirus/Identity protection. :)

Regards, Dave

Guys,

I think most people are concerned about security, and if they're not they should be.  I have a firewall, an antivirus program, and programs that check for spyware and other malware.

I don't care whether SS updates my profile with mission completions, although the function ought to be documented better.  I was simply curious.

Hiya Barnacle :)

Like you, I'm also concerned about security on my PC.  I run all the usual programs, except a separate spyware program, because it's built-in to my Internet Security package.  I also have a broadband router, with built-in security (you can never be too careful) ;)

This guide may point you in the right direction for Rank/Mission-time uploading:

Hmm I have never had a virus and I only have windows firewall and windows defender.  :-\ But I am just a safe surfer and don't click ad's that say YOU ARE THE 1,000TH VISITOR!

Well, I am very paranoid, then. I don't trust any single spyware program to catch them all. I have all my machines set up to run several different programs, which scan the PC at scheduled times.

It amazes me that some of the most expensive programs will miss some spyware or other nasties that the freebies will pick up. For me Spybot and Adaware are worth their weight in gold.

I have also hardened the registries (by setting permissions to only allow change access if I turn it on, manually). But that is extreme and you really need to be fluent in the language of Registry.

But, we have never had a virus or worm or trojan on any PC under my control (quite a lot of those around). The spyware is always there of course. It affects Internet explorer and Firefox equally (no matter what the  FF users may claim  ;D.

But what is "spyware"? Some programs claim that every cookie you have (even when they are useful and don't do anything except remember your preferences) is spyware. So long as a cookie doesn't report back to any other site than the one I visited and so long as it only stores information that the site owner could have collected as I viewed the pages, I'm not concerned. But you have make your own decision as to where you draw the line.

Guys, it seems to me that a healthy respect for the dangers of spy-ware, ad-ware, other mal-ware, and hackers is not paranoia--the bad guys, like it or not, are out there.

I have a firewall built into my router, and I use (in alpha order) Ad-Aware, Norton Antivirus, PCPitstop Optimize, Registry Mechanic, and SpyBot Search and Destroy. Many run weekly via Task Scheduler; I run the others weekly, more often if it seems appropriate.  They all catch something the others have missed, no matter what order I run them in.  That's because they all have different algorithms and look for slightly different things.

No, not all cookies are bad.  They're very convenient for things like identifying you to web sites so you don't need to log in every time.  The programs I use leave those cookies alone.  Some cookies, however, keep track of what sites you go to--and report the information to people who generate ads.  My programs identify those cookies and delete them.  PC Pitstop Optimize also gets rid of unneeded stuff like temporary files, and thereby helps performance.

I'm not recommending these specific programs:  choose what you will.  In fact I may be changing my choices as subscriptions come up for renewal.  But protect yourself, guys.  It's not paranoia, it's just smart.

But I suspect that the paranoid label could be applied to a person who does a sector edit in binary, to scan for changes to boot sector and for root kit types of changes. And who as a matter of weekly routine, reviews the 13 key locations in the Registry that are concerned with startup program launching.

Hey! That's me.  ;D

I tend to be paranoid about cookies etc........I delete them every day, always have ;D

I also clean all my temp files, temp internet files, and history every day ;)

Carl, I don't think you're paranoid.  Neurotic, maybe, but not paranoid. ;D

Terry, I'm not technical enough to know what the programs I use do in looking at the boot sector, registry, etc.  But I suspect that some of them do everything you mention.  If you want to take the time to do that stuff... that's up to you.  I don't know how and don't want to know how.  That's why they make off-the-shelf programs! 8)

The thing is...in this world, ya gotta protect yourself!

But being cautious (I don't want to get Barnacle worried about me using the word "paranoid" ;D), how do you know about the ones you don't know about?

Just because your Antispyware didn't find anything, that doesn't mean that your antispyware isn't spying on you....

Hi all,
It seems I started a bit of a situation with my comment about llamalord.

If anyone has taken offence then I'm sorry.

The reason for the comment was llamalord's answer to Barnacles question which was,
"Does the program go on the internet and tell tales?

The answer was;
You could say that, Yet no one seems to care. :-\

It looked to me like llamalord was implying that SS08 might be spying on him but he wasn't sure.
Which seemed to me was a bit paranoid.
If anyone has taken offence then, as I said, I apologise.  :-[

Regards, Dave

Dave, I certainly wasn't offended, and I doubt anyone else was either.  If you can't zap your friends from time to time...who can you zap? ;D

Offence? Don't be daft. I thought we were having a good giggle about this, while simultaneously wagging our moralistics fingers.  ;D  ;D

Anyway, when you're as mad as I am, an accusation of paranoia would be quite a compliment.  ;D

And how do you know that your antispyware program isn't spying on you?  ;)
