Title: Computer Infected With Trojan Virus
Post by: NathanC on April 15, 2008, 12:19:25
Hi guys, unfortunately my comp has been infected with a Trojan virus called "Vundo".

We have tried our best to remove it but no luck, so a guy who knows what he is doing is going to take a look. I am writing this message from a friends laptop, and this is probably the only chance i'll get to use it until my comp is better. I just wanted to alert you guys that i may be gone for a few days, hopefully not weeks. And no, i don't have a clue how it got here, i think it may be a stealth program that managed to hack into my Comp........

I may not even be able to post in this topic again, i can't keep borrowing peoples comps forever  :P

Just thought you guys should know,

NathanC

Also try downloading and installing AVG Free Edition. You can find it here and is award winning software. I use it myself and it's perfectly safe. http://free.grisoft.com :)

Hi Guys, thanks a lot, i'll have a look at them. At the moment we are using a program called "VundoFix", it scans my computer and finds and deletes the Trojan.

EDIT: While i was typing this message the VundoFix finished scanning, and it didn't find anything........ Hopefully a guy who's a Friend of my mum's will sort it out (he's a Tech guy here in the base) but i'll make sure to show him your suggestions/comments

Thanks,

NathanC

Well just in case, I would backup any important files you may have, just incase your system becomes increasingly unstable ;)

i'm afraid to say this but to me this sounds like a "computer shop job" to me chances are nathan the same thing will happen to you as what happened to me, remember when i told you about that virus that i got? i think you will have to bring it into the computer shop and he will have to clear your system, some of the programmes, images, songs etc. will remain whereas others will go. If this is the same as what happened to me.

Anyway, best of luck fixing it.

Jack

Thanks for all the help you lot, but my mums friend is a complete star  ;D He came around and Installed a tool called "AntiVur" which is a really useful system. It is just like Norton and Macafee but the difference is, the trojan cannot pass through undetected, so you can get rid of it straight away. My comp is back to normal now, and Jack, i think i am as Virus alert as you are now. I'm so glad to have my comp back now, especially as i am off School with a tummy bug. Anyway, yes this message was written from m own virus free computer, and everything is back to norma now......  :)

Hi Nathan.

Thing to consider: How did that Trojan get past your antivirus system?

Turned off?
Not using one?
Using one that didn't detect it?

If any of the above are true, you need urgently to install and run and keep up to date a good antiviral/spyware program.

You should also consider where it came from and consider if you need to modify your internet habits.  ;)

Glad it''s fixed!

Thanks Terry. I have Macafee Security System. The IT man who came said that this kind of Virus can pass through our security system (Macafee) without it being able to remove it. The Macafee system was switched on as it kept coming up with "Trojan Detected" and "Macafee reccomends you remove this program". When we did click remove it said we needed to restart the computer, but when we came back it was still there. So our friend installed this program called AntiVir that could remove the program, and it was all better. I don't know how the virus got into our computer, but i'm just glad to see the back of it.

Hiya all :)

One way I noticed for Viruses to 'sneak in' undetected is through Java.  I don't use Java at all now, 15 managed to sneak onto my system a while ago, so I avoid it at all costs ;)

Luckily, I was able to remove all of them ;)

Just my own personal experience ;D

Glad you got it all sorted Nathan :)

Regards.

My Sister-in-Law in the USA got infected by vundo and was tricked into buying a program which allegedly would clear it. But that was also a trojan (and worse). She is very ill and the PC is her only real way of contacting her family. All of the junk that this piece of **!## put on her PC was crippling it.

Fortunately, I had previously set up a remote access system (one of my own designs and not even noticed by this trojan/virus) and was able to log in and eventually get rid of this plague. It was certainly a fight!

Then I went to the credit card company and got her money back. I pushed very hard and they gave her some compensation which they took back from this bunch of lying, cheating, coniving ***!#! ers. (excuse me while I foam at the mouth...). I also got their credit card facilities withdrawn.

I doubt that this had the slightest effect on them though. No doubt they were up and running 10 minutes later. If I had a shotgun....

I think they use it to sale their products to.
A friend of me got 5 days before his anti-virus program expired a mail,to extend his membership again for a year, which he was intended to do,however because of the job,he could not do it intime.
Same stuff happened,strange,very strange.
He got it out of his computer, however it took him 4 hours.and even reinstall some programs.
Commercial tricks!!!!
Should be even called a crime as hacking computers.
Marc
P.S.And lett them pay for all the damage that they make.

The internet is a death trap for your computer i think most people who have delt with the internet have had problems with viruses etc. i had a virus before and i had to get my whole system re-started, cost me around £40.00 all together (money converted from euros) and i lost many of my programmes, pictures, music etc. and many other things i had been working on, i used to have Norton Antivirus, and to be honest it was useless and annoying, after i had that virus my anti-virus had to be cleared away, that was another £30.00 but this time i got BullGaurd it is fantastic! it has everything you want to stop viruses and many other hazards to your pc! i would certainly reccomend it. But i tell you, computers are an expensive do.

OH I have one you must try to. It's called Spy bot-Search and Destroy, and it is effective of in these kind of situations ;), just do a search through once a week and it will take care of any unwanted relatives.

Here it is: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Try to avoid 'Unknown' free anti-virus programs  e.t.c as they could be a virus themselves ;)

Because i once got one and it was a virus itself.. luckiy i got rid of it before it started any damage..

Spybot Search and Destroy is an excellent pogram. We use it on all our PCs. It is very widely used.

Like all anti-spyware programs it doesn't catch them all, but I find that if we use it along with Adaware, they seem to catch everything.

Ive always wondered why some j*$% a@@es try to ruin the Internet for everyone. I hate haveing to be careful with what I download. All I know is I keep my anti-virus software on 24-7 and update it as much as possiable. ;) The last thing I want to do is fight with a virus :-X

Pulling off all of their soft dangly bits and them deep-frying them is too good. Feed them Marmite sandwiches, I say!

Most of these people Nathan, are just sad sorry individuals with nothing better to do than try to ruin others PC's ::)

A few years ago, this was limited to a small number of "spotty" individuals hiding away in their bedrooms, but it is more widespread now.  Very annoying really >:(

A simple example of a virus is a small BASIC (Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) program that instructs the screen to fill with 'a particular word/phrase', easy to do, but quite annoying for the many shop owners that suffered this problem in the 1980's ::)

That type of thing couldn't do any damage though, just a looping effect on the computer it was written on ;)

Unfortunately the real problem is that organised crime is now involved. Your details, along with possibly millions of others will possibly have gone into a larger database somewhere. With enough snippetts of information, it might be possible to do lots of financial damage.

I assume you've changed your bank login details. Perhaps also arranged to transfer to a new account? Changed your forum login name and passwords? (and for any other places that you have logins).

The fact that nothing has happened yet doen't mean you should think that all is well. Better safe than sorry.

I know this sounds paranoid, but maybe you should be that way as well, as you know that data may have been taken from you.

Reasons for people makeing viruses.
1 they have nothing better to do with there life.
2 they like causing problems for people
3 make themselfs feel better by doing damage.

Sadly they aren't spotty little individuals with nothing to but hide away in their bedrooms making life difficult for others. They are pretty clever, dangerous little excrementheads. Far more of a problem than just annoying.

These people can literally take over your life if you are stupid enough to keep certain sensitive data on your computer.

BTW BASIC as Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code is an anti-acronym (someone remind me of the proper word?) and the word basic pre-dates that by many years.

They've caught a few virus writers and given them jail sentences. Not enough, though.

I think the Law nowerdays is absolutely useless, i mean there have been several murders etc. and some people have been given short sentences and then they have been released early! anyway back on topic, i think the law should crack down on virus writers, it seems there are so many floating around the system now that its impossable to punish the virus writers.

Well, here's a bit of pessimism for you all, and something that may make you think ;)

How do we know that these evil little programs aren't actually being written by the companies who produce the internet security packages.........hmm.........

Think about that one, next time you're asked to buy the latest version of their software ;)

The thing that bugs me is, that some of the imprisoned virus writers I mentioned above were offered jobs in the Antivirus companies as soon as they got out of prison. Officially they were taken on to provide expert knowledge on how to detect viruses.

But if I was a conspiracy theory freak, I'd be highly suspicious. Hmmm... perhaps I am such a person.

at the end of the day what it comes down to is money, if they think they can earn themselves a lot of money by producing a fatastic security package they will do whatever it takes to do that, even if it means giving jobs to people that have programmed viruses, a sneaky idea but a good one as far as earning money is concerned.

its always good to be slightly suspicious about everything ;) hehe

Sorry to open such an old topic... But I was wondering if there are any statistics relating to how many people get virus or similar. I must admit that I've not always been as careful with firewalls and checkers as I should. But I am careful on visiting dodgy sites.

With this conspiracy theory, is it likely that people will really suffer lengthy prison sentences as part of the scam? Methinks not (although this is not a guarantee).

I do think, however, that when you install a checker it tells you that you have XYZ infections that this is *&&&. I know because I tried it on a freshly installed Windows and MS Office and I do not accept these contained Viruses (or viri? Someone correct my spelling, pls)
