News on Ship Simulator 2009

Although we are still working hard improving Ship Simulator 2008, at the same time a new development team has started on Ship Simulator 2009. Some of the new features:

    * A completely new ocean, based on real-world wave spectra
    * Tornados / water spouts
    * The harbour of Sydney
    * Part of Antarctica
    * New navigational instruments like a radar and a conning screen
    * Many brand new vessels.

Im intrigued by the ocean, "real-world wave spectra", does than mean randomizing the waves? And creating the type of wave you would expect to see in that part of the world?

Also, Tornados / water spouts (does this mean we can expect to see a more dynamic weather system)? That is likely to change as we are playing (i.e. you see the darkness coming in before it starts to rain etc).? Hopefully this will also affect users playing together on the servers experiencing the same time and weather conditions, should be interesting  :)

Time to get excited already :) Although i suspect the name will change to Ship Sim 2010  ;)

I got that also, sounds like it is going to be very dynamic.

They did say they want to release in Q1 of 2009

True but wasnt SS2007 renamed to SS2008? Could happen again if development is delayed for whatever reason  :)

It was renamed because it came out so late.

Ah, they might want to name it 2010. Seems so far away though. Depends on when they expect to release the next one.

I'm seriously looking forward to Ship Sim 09, and I was like a smal child in a toy store when I read the news letter!!  :D ;D

I can't wait to see some screens and I hope I could be selected for BETA testing. Sounds awesome though!!  ;D

Do you think it will include currents / tides?

Hard to say, if they can generate A completely new ocean, based on real-world wave spectra and Tornados / water spouts, then perhaps they could model currents and tides also. If they did, I think everyone would have fun in getting into a mooring in strong currents ;D

:D Well I hope not, I certainly won't moan, and I'm looking forward to a challenge ;D

I'm in two minds about this, whilst I look forward to the new 2009 game I can't help feeling there is so much more that could be done with SS2008. I hope the existing ships will more easily integrate with the new game.

Ahh yes but Ship Sim 09 may have the same basic code, so just see it as a upgraded version of ship sim 08?

Anyway, if it was a complete overhaul on the coding side, they could make way for better possibilities and better features. Look on the bright side :)

Both simulations are great in their own way (or at least SS 09 will be I hope)

I hope it is not written in Quest3d again whilst the engine has brought the game this far but it now seems to be limiting the game's development. Surely now the game is acheiving the same sort of sales figures (300,000+) as Ubisoft's "Silent Hunter 4" VStep could look at developing its own 3d custom application.

Well I am inclined to agree, and perhaps they are doing but that is something that will remain unknown :(

So is VSTEP planning on coming out with a completely new Ship Simulator every year making the one before obsolete?  I firmly believe in supporting VSTEP for their hard work, just seems like they have a long way to go before they throw in the towel on 08 and redesign an entirely new game.  Would think they would just keep doing expansions like New Horizons for a couple years before doing that.

Although I’ve only used it for a process control and a medical imaging application—not for a game—I doubt you could find a better 3D engine. I’d be interested in the opinion of others who developed in both Quest3D and one of the other “better” engines.

As computers advance, so do peoples expectations. Perhaps it is easier sometimes to start from scratch than it is to patch and tweak existing programmes.

  I think mainly they are talking about the fact the Questviewer will crash over and over again until you remove anything off your system that it could possibly have a problem with unlike other gaming 3d applications.  Don't think it was ever intended to be a gaming platform, at least it acts like it wasn't.  I expect it is the best thing out there for business applications though since you wouldn't have things like a movie player on those unlike home PC's  ;D  However, after you do make it the most important thing on your system it does run pretty well!

  Of course Ship Simulator was made as a professional simulator not just a game so Questviewer may be the best option for that part of it and it wouldn't make sense to have an entirely new graphics engine for the game version of it.

i hope Titanic stays. and her sisters are added. and icebergs in free roam. and when Titanic sinks, she goes down like the movie and real thing. i hope i can beta test too. i've always wanted to help with any SS game. and if Britannic is added, she sinks by capsizing.

Cobra,
If you have been reading any of the many posts on the subject, you should know that it is seldom QuestViewer itself that crashes; QV is aborting and reporting problems with code external to QV. You will have the same problems with any other 3D engine.

Hmmm, Well if they put in Sydney, Australia i will be proud of them for adding something that is in the southern Hemisphere. Plus i live in australia too. But we'll just have to wait and see, wont we.

Cheers, Matt

Amidst all the euphoria about the news of VSTEP already working on SS2009 (at the expense of ironing out the bugs on SS2008?) spare a thought for us wrinklies and students on fixed income and schoolchildren on pocket money. :'(
We cannot justify buying a new game every year or so.  So if SS2009 means that all new ships created will not run in SS2008 then we are shafted.  (maybe another topic for the Court of Human Rights??) ;)

I'm sure this won't happen, VSTEP won't just be creating an entirely new game and forget about Ship Sim 2008. I know this won't happen as VSTEP are NOT like that.

I think the current Ship Sim is a little limited as to the major features it has, and so a complete new rebuild is necessary if they are to incorporate new and exciting features.

However, nothing has been leaked apart from the announcement that the new game is in development, who knows, the two sims may run harmlessly side by side. Don't just speculate until we know a little more.

Ship sim 08 is great, but 09 will probably be twice as good. Anyway, VSTEP will probably have another year to sort out SS08 before the new one is released, so stop panicking about the bugs and stuff guys!!

Look on the brighter side of things!!

I hope you are right Captain - with all its limitations I am quite happy with SS2008 and will be quite happy to purchase new ships or environments for it if they become available.   As you say, it is pointless speculating at this stage whether new content will be suitable for use in SS2008.
Thank you for giving me hope and a reason for staying alive ;D

Hehe no problem, I wouldn't want to be held responsible for a sudden death of a SS user   :-X ;D
