Post by: maritiem on March 21, 2008, 14:05:16
hey

i was wondering if someone here is captain in real life.
because i want to become also captain and than it would be nice if I have a question that he/she could answer that question.
i prefer a dutch one because that is easier for me to speak, but that is not a big problem.

Not me either, I'm "only" chief officer.  ;)

But if it's not a personal question, I think you can post it here waiting for somebody to reply, and if it is so, you will have to wait for a master to introduce himself here.

Well in fact AHTS, PSV and R.O.V. support are different types of supply vessels.
Some parts of the job may change, but these different types are quite close each from another.
And you what do you do for now, do you work on ships or studying ?

By the way, there a topic called "master's licence", I didn't read so I don't what they are talking about on it but did you have a look?

Haha, you don't study for captain, you study for officer ;)
And maybe, you will become a captain after many years of experience.

Maritem, You could could try contacting the Swedish version of the BSC (British Shipping Council) or any shipping company should be able to give you the information you are looking for. Some shipping companies run an apprentaship scheme. But sam was right whenhe said it takes a lot of hard work to get to the position of captain.
All the bestif you carry on with this

well when i am 'officer' that means that i am directly also a captain i mean if i want i may also stear the ship
and when the captain will go working on a other ship means that i become captain.
that is what i always thought...
and i hope you will give answer on my answer again  ;)

anyway thnx for your comment!

maritiem,

Unless you hold the license as Master (Captain) for the specific tonnage and route for the ship you are on you can not legally act in the capacity of Captain.  Even when the Captain is sleeping he/she is still in command.  If the Captain dies or becomes disabled then the next ranking officer in the Deck Department assumes command only so as to get the ship back alongside in order to ship another Captain (Master).  You will find that on many commercial ships the senior mate holds a Master's license for the tonnage and route.  It is highly unlikely that the Captain would physically leave the ship while underway and leave a juior officer "in command" unless it was very serious circumstances.  We also have a saying the industry whcih is very iomportant to remamber: "There is only ONE captain".

The road to captain is long and difficult with many hours and days on ship and in study of the trade.  Each country that has a maritime program is slightly different as to the licensing requirements.  However, we are all bound by STCW.  Take time to read about and also visit your country's maritime authority. That will provide you with a wealth of information.  Good luck with your adventure!

You get to steer your vessel even if you're not a captain, in fact the captain does a lot of administrative work besides having full responsibility for the ship movements etc, it's depends also on what type of vessel you sail on ,

Ah, this is all about sea going vessels.

I'm a "captain" as well. Maybe it's better to say, i'm an inland-skipper.
So, Maritiem, i can't help you with info, sorry. But the subject was: Is someone here a captain in real, i thought, let's post! ;D

I'll post a pic of my ship. :)

Hello maritiem,
I was a real Captain. I went to sea when I was 15 in 1956 and wandered all over the world for 11 years. I qualified as a Captain in 1967 and started working in ferries to the Isle of Wight. I became a Captain in 1968 in a paddle ferry and later in ships like the Red Falcon in the game. I stayed as Captain until I retired in 2006. Not many people are lucky enough to be a Captain in the same company for 39 years. Now I play with Ship Simulator!

Wow, a lot of experience in this forum! I have a question: in the Merchant Marine sector, when one reaches their port of destination, are they alloted any free time to roam the local area?

fletcher,
It depends on the particular situation. For example I was on a bulk carrier chartered to the USSR government to load grain  from wherever they could buy the stuff. We arrived at Montreal to start loading and we, Mate, 2nd mate and 3rd mate worked non stop to ready the ship to load, loaded and sailed to sea without even a second to look at the shore, never mind go ashore. Over 48 hours without a break ::). At other times things were much easier, but going ashore was very often a bit of an expensive bore!!!!

Angus.

yes i am a real capt. both ship and aircraft. And i can say that this ship sim 2008 is no where close to the real thing...in ,ms fsx {microsoft flight sim x ) is more close to a flight capt.. but there is no sea simm out there that has come even close to a real sim.  i was a capt in us coastguard in to 1980s. and a flight capt. with us government

Greetings,
Creating the dynamics of vessels is the most difficult thing on a sim.
For the moment, getting as close as we can is the best option. This sim is untill now the best of(better than ports of call&the new flightsim)were they are now putting vessels in to.However if you see how they react,well..........

haha, only the company XO is a pain.

We're going to Nassau bahamas, Toulon France, Palma de Majorca, and supposedly Belfast, though I heard that might change.  Leaving May 12, getting back for the fireworks July 4th in NY Harbor.

Hi all,

I have just posted a detailed message on what a Ship's Officer does, and how to take up one of these roles.  Remember that you don't start off as a Ship's Captain - it takes years of experience to reach that level.  Only Deck Officers can be promoted to the rank of Captain (Master).

See post here: http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,6644.msg72218.html#msg72218

I am due to start a Deck Officer Cadetship with a major cruise line in September 2008.  I currently write a blog, as well as providing lots of information to those people considering a career in this industry:

Guess there's a change of destination (no surprise there)... dredging in Belfast or something is changing our itinerary, looks like Liverpool, Wales or Edinborough, possibly 2 of the 3.

Hi Dan,

Good to hear you are considering a career at sea - to be honest I am not entirely sure how the maritime system in the US operates.  However I do know that a number of British Nautical Colleges take on international students - that said, not all companies take on international students (you would need to check that).

However every seafarer has to comply with international laws, including the STCW 95 regulations which are essentially the safety courses.  These are taught to all mariners wherever in the world you are.

Give careful consideration to the type of ships you want to work on - e.g. cruise ships, ferries, container ships, tankers, supply vessels etc.

I'm sure somebody that knows more about the US system will be able to help!

Good luck with your studies. :-)

Yup, I'm just getting started in the Maritime industry in the US, but here is what I know:

Hopefully, you're on the East coast.  This is where the majority of Maritime Academies are located.  There are 2 in the NYC area (SUNY Maritime, US Merchant Marine Academy (federal school)),  1 in MAssachusetts on Cape Cod area (Mass Maritime), another way up the coast in Castine, Maine (Maine Maritime).

I don't know much about USMMA, other than they are across the river from SUNY Maritime.  The other schools are all basically 4 year public schools, and you graduate with your 3rd mate/engineer license upon graduation assuming you want the license.  Each of these institutions have a training ship that will go out on Sea Terms either in summer or winter, giving you the sea time you need for the license.
