Actually the top speed of the Ocean Star is 27 knots. I tried it in ship sim 2008.

Hi explosives124

Well I just took all the speeds from the specifications that are stated in the game..

I haven't checked her speed ingame personally. I hardly ever go full speed anyway, I mostly sail in harbors and it's not always wise to go as fast as you can in those enviroments. :)

In SS06, I put Titanic at full speed ahead in NY harbor!

And amazingly the "Bugsier 2" is one knot faster when going astern, both in real and simulation! It's because of her underwater shape...

Cheers

Hello tman,
Also, some data about the ships can be found in this topic (http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,4410.0.html)

Great link there Groenngaard!

I found this on the wind speed: 25 - 31  Strong breeze large branches in motion; telephone wires whistle; umbrellas used with difficulty ;D

lol. Always remember to bring your umbrella if you are to measure the wind speed...  ;D

Don't forget the hat too, as that's an accurate measurement in windspeed :D

I find her really confusing design-wise. She's not a proper 'escort tug' in the strict sense, but she runs faster going astern?! (Tractor tugs designed to escort usually run stern-first, but the B2's stern doesn't look like the bow, if that makes sense lol)
I love it though, and it's causing me to miss out on all the other new ships!

Something i noticed during the game. The Red Jet has a top speed of around 40 knots with the engines at 500 rpm, the Agile Solutiun has a top speed of 17 knots with 5000 RPM  :-\

It doenst make sence, big vessels has engines with a low rpm like the Vermaas and Latitude. High speed vessels have engines with more RPM, but not more then let's say 1800 rpm.  ::)

The way i post in here is because the speed is related to the rpm so instead of making a new topic i put it in here.

Hi Jayshum,
Is there any significance in your use of the Svitzer logo under your title? I just noticed yesterday that "Svitzer Bidston" has that logo on her funnel rather than the normal Svitzer logo of a Maltese cross.

Speaking of top speeds the Royal Mail Steamer Titanic has 23kn in speed and she can only do 21 max in SS08.It says in a documentary on the history channel about Titanic called "Titanic, the Complete Story", which i have myself. The DVD looks like this http://store.aetv.com/html/product/index.jhtml?id=70411.

Does this really make gameplay bad?
Title: Re: Top Speeds
Post by: Ballast on May 11, 2008, 12:50:10
Yes, why make a beautiful ship with lots of details and forget the technical details.
Title: Re: Top Speeds
Post by: pauljanaway1 on May 11, 2008, 17:25:12
yes if the game said she will do 23kn them they need to up the engine speed to 80 rpm. titanics engines had a max of 83rpm meaning allmost 24kn maybe in the next patch they can up the engine speed?
Title: Re: Top Speeds
Post by: Ballast on May 11, 2008, 21:00:02
Well, i don't think the rpm and the speed are related together in the game...  :D I think it's just some adjustments in the ship dynamics.

at 75 rpm titanic will only reach 21.8kn

Title: Re: Top Speeds

so maybe in the next patch they can do somthing about it?
Title: Re: Top Speeds
Post by: Third Mate on May 12, 2008, 10:31:03
Of course, it all makes sense to me now.If the ship will go up to 85 RPM, it should give out more smoke than before, and that should solve the smoke problem for the Titanic as well.
Title: Re: Top Speeds
Post by: pauljanaway1 on May 12, 2008, 12:11:29
maybe more speed should make more smoke
Title: Re: Top Speeds

Hi all :)

To be honest, I won't expect the Titanic's top speed to change. Only critical errors will be fixed as the developers are already working on the new SS2009.

It's not as easy as it might look. Increasing the top speed will fundamently change the dynamics model of the vessel and to get it right again could easily take a week of work.

The model will probably need an update for the SS2009 so my humble opinion is that updating the Titanic for SS2008 to gain only 1-2 knots will be a complete waste of time.

RPM and speed aren't directly linked in the game. Max RPM is set manually and is then linearly scaled to match the engine thrust. However, quite a few vessels have fixed RPM or a special program/curve (that isn't linear) so do not consider the game RPM for being realistic. It is simply an expression of the percentage of power ordered.
