The New Horizons one? I think you will have to pay. But could a moderator dev or beta tester clarify this? :)

There will be two ways to get the new ships :

1. If you already own a valid license for Ship Sim 2006 addon pack, you can (it's already possible) download the ships of this addon, converted for Ship Sim 2008.

2. A new add on will be released, called "New Horizon". This one will contain : the ship's of the above addon, plus other new ships (a powerful harbourg tug with VSP propulsion, and a barge pusher, whose engine room will be modelled too), and plus a new navigation zone (Cornwall in great britain).

You can see screenshots of all this here :

I don't have this information, but it will very probably be available in both versions (box and download), like was  ship sim 2006 addon ...

Excuse me Denis, but it will not  be a VSP-driven tug, but an azimuth tractor tug (ATT), originally powered by two Aquamaster Azimuth Thrusters. And we get those thrusters in a free turning mode (360 degree) like the original "Bugsier 2"...

Cheers

If you already have a valid license for the SS2006 addon, the ships of it are available without having to pay anything. (IE if you already PAYED for the SS2006 addon, you can beneficy of it's ships without having to pay again for it.)

The New Horizon Add On will be a full add on, and this one won't be free.

Hi bottman,

you're right, I was talking about VSP to explain it was free turning mode thrusters ... But it's aquamaster :)

sorry for that !

No problem! Hopefully all azimuth driven vessels (BUGSIER 2, RED EAGLE, OCEAN STAR) will have free turnable propulsion units soon. Until now we can turn them by 180 degree into each direction, but not further. That will change... ::)

Michael,
Red Eagle has VSPs, which are, technically, not azimuthing propellers. Their thrust can be directed through the full 360 degrees.
Regards,
Marty

I’m sorry, I didn’t understand that you meant steering using the keyboard—which is not really a sensible way to steer a large vessel, especially one with azimuth drives or VSP. One of the reasons so many have trouble with the Red Eagle is that they have the idea that keys are easier to use than the wheels. The opposite is true.

Isn't that the definition of azimuth steeing - the 360 degree turnable propulsion  ;) ? And hey, it's quite easy to steer all three vessels by means of the keyboard with a little experience. I do so and all manoeuvres, incl. the so called "Tug-Ballet", are possible with the keys! Can't wait to show you some videos about that!  ;D

Best regards

Post by: mvsmith on February 13, 2008, 22:02:35
Michael,
The distinction is that azimuth drives involve rotating a propeller to face in the desired direction, but the VSP does not. The cyclic pitch of a VSP’s blades is changed, in much the same way a helicopter’s blades are.

Yes, all of the ships from the SS2006 add on will be in this new add-on, so you can expect the Ocean Star to be making an appearence.

The Ocean Star will be included with the addon.

You can even already download it, if you have registered your licence of the 2006 addon on your profile on this forum.

Title: Re: new ships
Post by: NathanC on February 16, 2008, 21:55:40
1. Buy SS2008
2. Buy SS2006 Add-On
3. Go to your profile and enter the liscence key for the SS2006 Add-on
4. After that, it will ask you if you want a free SS2008 liscence key. Click yes.
5. Enter that key. You will now have SS2006 add-on ships in 2008.

If you buy SS2006 addon, you'll only get the ships of this addon for SS2008. If you wait for the New Horizon addon (which I recommend), you'll get the same ships, plus two new ships (a modern powerful tug with aquamaster (azimuth) propellers, and a barge pushboat), and plus a new environnment (Cornwall).

Hi Denis,

Might I add, that it of course doesn't mean that the people who allready have the SS06 Addon and therefor part of the coming addon, will miss out on the new content. As said in the official announcement about the free upgrade, those completely new ships and the new environment will also be available to them, most likely as single addon downloads. (not as part of the free upgrade, these will have to be purchased)

Regards,
Fred

Post by: Denis on February 17, 2008, 09:55:44
you mean there will be two version of the new horizon add on ?

1. the full addon package
2. a partial addon package, less expensive, just to add the 2 new ships and the new zone, for those who already have the 2006 addon  ?

Title: Re: new ships
Post by: Mad_Fred on February 17, 2008, 10:03:55
Well I am not aware of what it will be precisely, but it says so in the official announcement that the SS06 Addon owners can still upgrade the 6 ships fpr free, and that the new ships and environment will be offered as single addons that they can purchase, in April.

http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,3052.0.html

I'm just saying this so that the SS06 addon owners don't think they have to pay again for those 6 ships in the new horizons addon. The 6 they allready have and were promised to get upgraded for free.

Fred

So if I purchase 2008 add-on I don't need to purchase 2006 add-on to be able to play on the add-on servers?

In short, 2006 add-on and 2008 add-on contains the same ships (plus two for 2008)?
Title: Re: new ships
Post by: Mad_Fred on February 18, 2008, 02:23:59
The SS2006 Addon had 6 ships.

The SS2008 Addon will have 8 ships, plus an extra enviroment.

The SS2006 Owners can get a free update for these 6 ships, plus they can buy the 2 new ships and enviroment.
They allready had a change to download the 6 ships. The missions will follow soon, for free, and the new addons which they can purchase are planned for April as single downloads.

The People that don't own the SS2006 Addon, can just buy the SS2008 addon. This is planned (off the top of my head) for the 22nd of March. They just buy the whole pack in one box or download.

That's about it in a nuttshell, as far as the announcements have explained the proceedings. I hope this answers your question.

Regards,
Fred

Why does everyone always want everything for free..?   ::)

Don't you want the developers to stay in business and keep making upgrades and new games?  ;D

Seriously though... a few ships from SS06 are in SS08 too, and ALL the SS06 addon ships will be in the SS08 addon.

If you want the other SS06 ships, you will just have to buy SS06 and play that. Those "missing" ships will not be added to SS08.

and you make "stuck with SS08" sound as if you got a bad deal by buying the sim. You knew what you were buying, didn't you? No one ever announced a load of free goodies.  :-\

One of the reasons so many have trouble with the Red Eagle is that they have the idea that keys are easier to use than the wheels. The opposite is true.

I don't really agree with you mvsmith ... If you use your mouse, you can't rotate both wheels at the same time. Wich can be problematic.

take the example of the Bugsier, or the Ocean star. If you only use mouse, and want suddenly to set both engines to full reverse. You take the time to set left propeller to -180%, then the same for the right propeller. during the time you spent in beetween, your heading will probably have changed a few degrees (having one propeller full foward and the other one full backward)... The inertia of the ocean star is big enough, and she won't have probably moved a lot , but for the bugsier which response is very fast, you might have already hit a peer or another ship ... don't you think ?

I like playing with the mouse (in absence of real-like controllers) just for that reason! In real life, if you fully reverse engines, firstly it will take time depending on the kind of propulsion, the speed and the inertia of the ship, and secondly your heading will certainly change and become a little unpredictable because of the pitch effect and the loss of control.
Shipsim for now doesn't take into account any of these parameters. The engine reverse is immediate even on the latitude, and the pitch effect while crash stop is absent.
So using the mouse is my away to feel a little more realism in the game.  :P
Title: Re: new ships
Post by: mvsmith on February 21, 2008, 07:08:16
Denis,
Ocean Star & B2 are exceptions, because of the way the controls are implemented in Ship Simulator. In actual installations of dual ASD or tractors, the controls can be locked together for normal steering underway. For most other ships, including Red Eagle, precise steering is better done using the ship’s wheel with the mouse. Some missions are virtually impossible to complete with keyboard keys alone.
It’s amusing to read posts demanding realism on so many other points yet not when it comes to actually steering the ship.

Marty

Hello AndyJay,

Apart from the jetski and the hovercraft that came in a free upgrade, there are no free downloadable ships available. People that own the SS06 Addon, do get a free update for SS08 which has the same 6 ships in it, but of course you have to pay for the SS06 addon to begin with.

No 3rd party addons either, if you meant that aswell. Only VSTEP releases new content.

Fred

wow thats all a bit confusion...

atm i own ss2008 and the ss06 addon. so i will be able to get a chaper version of the ss08 addon.
but are there still plans to make the ss06 expansion pack mission available for ss08? and will customers that plan to buy the full new horizons exppack without the ss06 exppack get this missions too?

and then there is this Dutch Elbe & furie (http://www.shipsim.com/ShipSimForum/index.php/topic,2979.0.html) add on. will this be a part of new horizons? if not, when will it be released in other languages?

 ???
Title: Re: new ships
Post by: Mad_Fred on February 28, 2008, 17:28:16
It's been explained a few times..

The SS06 Addon customers get a free update for their 6 ships to SS08.

The New Horizons addon will have those same 6 ships BUT also 2 new ones and a new environment.

So Ss06 Addon customers do not really have to buy the New Horizons Addon, they would only need the 2 new ships and the new environment.

And so, these new additions will be available to the SS06 Addon customers too, but as standalone payware addons, planned for April, so slightly later than New Horizons

So SS06 Addon customers do not get new horizons cheaper. They just get the same content that they allready had, suited for SS08, for free.

And the Elbe & Furie will not be in New Horizons. And there is no information as to the release of that addon. This will be announced in due time.

Check out the website and the Official topics in "FAQ's And announcements" for news about these things.  It's all described in the official announcements.

Regards,
Fred
