Ey guys/Spambot,
I just happened to see a post in which someone refers to the Virtual Sailor.
I went to check it out on the website and it does look nice. But can somebody tell me some practical experience about it? What are the negative points for that one and how does it compare with SS08?
For the moment I am grossly addicted to SS08 and I love to play it, even with the bugs in it. Been looking long time for a decent ship simulator...

I was a subscriber to virtualsailor (you get so many updates then you have to subscribe again but it was value for money) and it was great in that it was pretty much the first of its type but unlike Ship sim it is very limited and has little or no structure you do get regular updates and the variety of craft is impressive but the whole thing just feels hollow, its more of a fun way to spend an afternoon exploring the different ships or scenery but unlike ship sim it lack the polish of "real" simulator the whole thing although good at what it does just feels some what superficial.
That said though its ie very easy to use and is very good at what it does and as with Ship sim it is evolving all the time and is well worth a look, as they have a free trial time limited deom that allows you to get a feel for the product. Plus the after care and email feed back is first rate as well.

The graphics are a personel let down for me. ;)
In my experience, I contacted them for help, but didn't geta reply for ages. Got one in the end though, so I was happy. ;D
-
Xbox vs Playstation anyone? :P
..or maybe
BMW vs Toyota... :o
I have used both these sims for a very long time and they are both favored and none of them are 100% perfect. That's a conclusion I can live with at least... ::)

Good. Thanks all u guys for the info.
I will stick with SS08 then. One addiction is enough for now. :)

A nice point about virtual sailor is the fact that the camera can go underwater, so you see the props going and the propeller wash etc. It also fully supports submersible craft :) ;D

hi my name is matthew and i would like to know how to make your own scenery for virtual sailor could someone tell me how to maps in the scenery editor program in virtual sailor program
-
Hi, this is a very old topic, more than a year and a half. Also, keep in mind that this is not the virtual sailor forum, we are the ship simulator forum. Ask the VS Forum here.

and also, Ship Sim and Virtual Sailor are 'rivals.' So please don't start a War ::)
-
Nah, not rivals.
Both have a very different approach, and each has it's own fans and following.
-
Both exist in different ways Matt, they have nothing to rival each other on, as Fred said.
Virtual Sailor has the open-ended gameplay in which you can create any vessel, any scenery and do whatever you like on it.
SS08 has its realistic nautical gameplay, with detailed vessels and environments.
The only real feature they compete against each other with is just multiplayer, which SS08 dominates in as VS doesn't have a really good multiplayer at all.
Plus, Virtual Sailor is really just for sailing boats, but the fact you can build anything for it has turned it into a vessel diverse game.
-
Virtual Sailor in my point was more af a game they "threw together" Ship Sim is more user friendly and an all around better game (in my opinion) Virtual Sailor lets you upload other peoples models into it which is cool, but its a pain at the same time its not a well put together game ;)

Both Games have good and bad points. I use both of them. The main difference in VS is the User Created content within the game, sometimes that's a good thing, sometimes that's a bad thing.
I like both just as much if I'm honest!
Jack.

I was saying "rival" sarcasticly. when you see me say a word with these quotes '[some word]', I am sarcastic. I heard Virtual SAilor came in the '90s and is older than Ship Sim. But they are both great games.
-
A long time ago... i was little kid who never play computer games... Then my dad purchased VS to me... My gaming addiction started then.
:P VS is nice game and now when i play SS08 i miss 1 thing from VS and it is better wave system.
SS08's waves are kinda annoying... its like huge paper wich is textured from one little 1/100 sized pic of wave...
-
SS08 DOES have waves you know, maybe not the greatest, but so far, its sounds like SSE's waves are going to be a lot better, not quite as good as pro's, but very good.
-
I would like to see a wake behind a ship because as we all know (I hope) that when a boat goes by usually they leave a wake behind not flat calm water
-
They do leave wakes.
-
Oh, I think that would be a very challenging effect to pull off, I'm sure VSTEP could do it though. :)
-
Yes thats what I meant they have the "foam" behind it but to have the rolling effect and what not would be amazing :2thumbs:
-
I think Virtual Sailor 7 is worth it. I haven't actually played it, but I know for a fact it outweighs SS on a number of factors:
1. Low system requirements
2. Bigger selection of addons
3. The ability to see underwater
4. Weapons
5. Sea life (To be included in SSE)
&
6. Sinking ships looks like FUN!
In closing, VS7 looks better than SS. But it should be freeware, like the Marias Pass route for Trainz.
-
i suggest you refrain from saying that vs7 is better than ship sim, we dont tend to do alot of chatter about it, as mad fred had said each has its ups and downs and own followers.
-
I think Virtual Sailor 7 is worth it. I haven't actually played it, but I know for a fact it outweighs SS on a number of factors:
What I can tell you that I've owned both SS2008 and VS.
99% of the time I have played SS2008 because it is so realistic and more believable. On the other hand I've only played VS 1% of the time, only because of the novelty value of playing a couple of Caledonian MacBrayne ferries and the paddle steamer 'Waverley' (which were great). Then I got pretty bored with VS after a while because the vessels dymanics are not accurate and there are no 'proper' missions and waypoints like in SS2008 (if there were, I must have missed them somehow).
Having said that, since I upgraded to Windows 7 from Windows XP (which required a clean HD installation), I have reinstalled both SS2006 & SS2008 on my PC again, and have not bothered to do the same for VS.
That's just my personal opinion. Like Mad Fred says, both Vstep and VS have their own different approach, own ideals, own strengths and weakness, their own fan following etc.
-
I haven't actually played it, but I know for a fact it outweighs SS on a number of factors:
I have not played it either, so I can objectively state, without being prejudiced by observation, that VS is inferior to SS2008.

I hereby apologise on behalf of the entire population of Great Britain for suggesting that Americans do not understand irony! ;D

Virtual Sailor's Demo for VS7 is free to download and play with only one environment and 7 ships. And gameplay for VSDemo is limited but you can keep playing it over and over without downloading it again and VSDEmo is different from VStep's SSDemos. Vstep SS Demos lets you play the game before you purchase and the gameplay is unlimited even after doing the mission but in SS06 Demos, you can only stay in a limited spot. Kinda same for SS08 Demo and not sure for the SSEDemo. So this Demo differentials makes SS looks much better than VS
-
Of course you could just shorten that to "SS demo is better than VS demo", Matt.
Of course you could just shorten that to "SS is better than VS",Nathan. ;D
