MODEL PERMISSION NOTICE
pjotr wrote:
We recently realized that we have to get official permission from the ship owner to add any ship to the game. I suspect that this is only really important for the official game and the official, commercial add-on packs. But I just want to warn everybody who is interested in creating new 3D models of ships that you need to be careful about using otheer company's name and ship designs without getting their permission. We have this permission for all the current ships in the game, and we have requested permission for the new ships we plan to add in the add-on pack.
Some companies will see adding their ships to the game as a valuable new promotional tool, like the old tugboats, but others may want to have more control over the use of their name, logo and ship designs.

im not sure if this is in the right topic, but i have modeled a ship that needs fixing to its polygons and textures and just wondered if any of you would like to view the vessel i created in google sketchup beta, and see if you could adjust it to a high detail-level,if not i would at least appreciate it if you viewed the vessel.
hopes from,shipfan55 :)

I and a freind made a own company name ;D EuroLink!
cool, can i make a ship with that name for you guys(a.k.a.,can i have copyrights?
-
I made myself a new ship company too! Its called Royal Ocean Line
-
Careful with that :D Being UK based, you have to get permission from the Dept for Trade and Industry to use 'Royal' in any company name! Even foreign companies here (such as Royal Dutch) have to have permission to use the Royal, English, British, etc etc in their name.

That's not fair. You can't own the word Royal. Other kingdoms use it aswell. You shouldn't have conquered 3/4 of the globe thus turning English into a worldwide used language if you didn't want to freely share these things! ;D
(not to be taken seriously, of course)
Seriously though, for instance, Royal Dutch Airlines has to have permission to fly into England with that name on the fuselage of the planes? So, they need permission to operate in the UK with that name? Even though it's just the translation of their own Dutch name? That's a bit odd isn't it, because it's not the UK that is represented with that Royal, it's Holland. Or maybe I just misunderstand or maybe it's just a formality for those kinda things.
-
No, the legalaties relate to the registered location of a company.
If Royal Dutch Airlines have a UK subsidiary then it would need permission to use the name ROYAL from our dear, dear government.
But it wouldn't apply to visiting aircraft.
Most countries have similar rules on prohibited words. Russia, France, USA all spring to mind.

Ok gotcha, was just wondering. Thanks

right ok. but for instance if i was to make a model of a family owned boat. would that be illegal if v step published that. or would it be fine? and can you use the boats you make on your own ship simulator? or is that not possable?

Well you learn something new everyday, But us english/british fellows cant own the word royal, Thats just stupid. You cant own a word, except in this case ofcourse, where it seems you can. Word owning? whatever next!
-
If you make up a word then I guess you can own it, but owning a word like "the" would be silly
-
You can own words, such as "FaceBook" or "YouTube" or "Ship Simulator"
-
Stuart never said "own". He said "use". And he is quite right. There are limitations in using certain words.
You cannot have a company and call it "Royal" or "Council" or "Institute" unless you meet certain requirements.
In the same way, you can't put the mark of the Queen's officers (a special type of crown) on flags, vehicles or use it for company purposes. Although my business can, since we meet the requirements and are assessed each year to continually check that we meet the requirements.
You can't copyright words already in "common usage", such as "the". (thank goodness)
"Facebook" didn't exist until Facebook's owners dreamt it up, so they could then copyright it or register it as a trademark.
-
I see, although ofcourse I already new about names of things being copyrighted etc
-
asking for permission is very hard to do, especialy for my poseidon project, thats why i started my Oceana project, that ship doesn't exist, only the name, but i remember i may use that name.
the ocean star is also used many times on ships.
it sails under Argonautica Cruiseline, the logo is in my avatar, it's a chineese symbol of luck, they have more then only one symbol for that
-
Thats why you shold make a own logo! ;D
