Hiya saltydog :)
I was watching this on BBC Breakfast this morning as the news broke. Good to know that all aboard were saved :)
The last I heard/saw was that the passengers were in Lifeboats awaiting another ship to rescue them ;)
Regards.
DJM.
-
Hiya DJM, yes, it is strange. The Explorer was strengthened for those conditions, that must have been some iceberg..
Good to see you back.. ;)
-
After what i heard it was a Norwegian ship named M.S Midnattsol who came for them;)
-
and the US coast guard..(god, what are they doing there..?)
-
Sry it wasent M.S Midnattsol that came for them but the M.S Nordnorge! sry about that
-
Good to see you back.. ;)
Thank you my friend, good to be back ;D
-
Just seen this on belgian tv-news also.
Lucky, everybody has picked up,however they told on the news, the vessel will be lost.
Not so good, for the enviroment overthere.Oil and fuel wil come out of the vessel.
Marc
-
It said on our news that it won't havea big impact on the environment
-
Well, that than the good news, even in this case.
Thanks for the update.
Marc
-
Isn't this the first ship that have been sunk by an iceberg in a while? you dont hear that an iceberg have sunk an ship very often......Beside's the Titanic:P
-
Well, that than the good news, even in this case.
Thanks for the update.
Marc
That's the last I heard :)
-
The Liberian registred M/S Explorer, had several deficiencies in its last inspection,including..issues with the lifeboats..a watertight door malfunctioning and missing search and rescue plans on board the vessel..also Chilean safety inspectors found a number of problems with its nav gear..it,s criminal that the cruise company take passengers money..and set sail with an inadequate safety record..we could see the banning of such ships to Antarctic and Arctic regions in the near future I reckon >:(.....thankfully no one lost their lives.. :)

Greetings,
Yes, that would be the logical result. However, were there is big money involved.I heard that the price for the journey was about 6000 euro/pp.

From what I gather several faults were found with Explorer but apparantly they had been fixed.
From the last pictures she doesn't seem to be lying very deep in the water, I wonder what the depth is there...
If she doesn't sink any lower I don't think the salvaging will be too difficult..
Edit: "the Explorer is no longer visible.."

These faults were fixed before she was allowed to sail (apparently) ;)
The news this morning, she has finally sank :(

Hoy Carl, thanks for this last report of that vessel.
Marc
-
No problem Marc, my pleasure ;D
-
It is a bit sad. She served well for many years.
At least "the little red ship" rests in familiar waters...
Maybe some crazy Dutch company will get a contract to lift her..
Hey, after the Koersk, it should be a piece of cake..! ;)
-
greetings,
Yes,you mean Smit-international salvage.
For these guy's it is quit easy, however who will pay this bill.I think it's cheaper to reconvert another vessel.
Marc
-
you could be right marc, alas, but you never know.. ;)
-
I heard this on AIM news(built into my email)and it showed 10 pics of it. The captain said,"Water was coming in through a hole the size of a fist.". the pumps kept the ship steady for the evacuation time. Then she started to list to starboard.

Sad. At least the Norwegian Liner got to it :)
The National Geographic Endeavour, another Antarctic cruise ship, was about 52 nautical miles away when it received the Explorer's distress call at 1:37 a.m. Friday. The captain of the Endeavour, Oliver Kruess, stayed in regular contact with the Explorer as he traveled at full speed toward the damaged ship.
At 2:50 a.m., the Explorer reported that it had lost propulsion and was drifting toward ice, Kruess wrote in an incident report filed Friday to Lindblad Expeditions, which owns the Endeavour. A 4 a.m. message said power had been restored, but the ship at 4:30 reported progressive flooding in its sanitary system and that passengers were in lifeboats.
Kruess was informed at 4:50 a.m. that the captain and the chief officer of the Explorer had abandoned ship. The engine no longer could be controlled and the ship was moving in tight circles.
After arriving at the scene at about 6:30 a.m. with the Norwegian ship, the Nordnorge, Kruess took stock of the Explorer. It "was listing heavily to starboard at an angle of possibly about 25 degrees," Kruess wrote. "The water level on her starboard side was reaching the restaurant window level.

RIP, M/V Explorer. :-[ VERY GLAD everyone made it off her safely...
Did anyone else get an Andera Doria vibe from the pics of the sinking? The way she went down was VERY similar... :o

Agent/Austin,
Thanks for the nice picture,of this sad moment.

It also did state that these defects were rectified before it left port!
Since no one 'owns' the artic/antartic region, getting international agreement to prohibit sailings into international waters would prove difficult.
I read about a Greek cruiser which sank by allowing water into the sewerage system which worked its way UP the ship... In that case it was faulty non return valves that allowed the water in

In both cases I think they must have been suffering from irrational behaviour caused by hypothermia... ;)

You know what they say "Marriage is an institution, and who wants to live in an institution?"
Me please (the Marriage kind anyway) ;D
-
i heared she went down like Titanic
-
Apparently she is now leaking oil, but the weather's too bad to do anything about it..
-
i heared she went down like Titanic
Broken in two? no, it actually capsized and went down on its side.

What I want to know is, all these ships that sink, are they simply left there or are they lifted and disposed of?
-
That depends. If it is causing an obstruction (see the tricolor in the channel) then it gets removed. If its an ecological problem, then i may be treated/removed.
Otherwise, the decision to lift it is between the insurers and salvage companies and is based on which i cheaper- repair or replace.
Think how many warships are on the bottom, let alone commercial vessels.

YEP! I saw the newspaper. Poor ship. It was just an old normal ship. No-ones gonna remember it. Im glad everyone was saved but what about the ship itself? I feel like crying! >:(

Even if the ship IS raised. I think that sadly. it will be ona one-way trip to the scrapyard... :'(

I hope not Shipaddict.....besides, she wasn't that badly damaged was she..?

Look on the bright side! All the passengers and Marmite was saved.
As for the ship- it is a steel box. It isn't a person. It doesn't have feelings. Let it rust and give fish a home.
Stu

isn't there anything we can do? if a ship is raised, she should not be scrped. she should be put back in service.

First you pretend you care the Marmite was saved, then you call it goo..
Hold on, I get it, you're concerned for the environment. Leaking Marmite jars could be much worse than any oil spillage, not to mention all the whales getting hooked on the stuff.. :D
-
Blasphemy! You may as well say that Marmite is just goo in a glass jar... :D

It is ;D :o
Contempt for that post. Utter contempt!

No, it was me! :o ;D ;D

Sorry about that. All this Marmite must be going to my head.. ;D
Btw, here's an interesting article questioning why the Explorer sank..
http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/1203/p04s01-wogi.html
-
I read a comment somewhere that like another cruise ship that sank in the 90s that the plumbing was to blame and that non return valves were not fitted- so water worked its way up the plumbing, basically sinking it through the toilets.
Of course, that is speculation as no cause has been established.
stu
-
That would be so embarressing... ;D
-
Hey!they should make the "Explorer" for SS08 to honor her last voyage on the sea and a mission to go along with it.... and give it its original horn, with it sound she'll bring that voyage in no time... ::) ;D
-
I think that would be a great idea.. ;)

I can just imagine all the youtube videos recreating the sinking... How good that would look for shipsim ;)

Here's another rather nice article..

Only three weeks later, the brand new Hurtigruten vessel "Fram" hits an iceberg! Following to a black out, the Norwegian cruise liner drifted against the ice, but almost without any damage. After restarting the engines, the "Fram" calls at an Antarctic military base for an expection. Nobody was injured and everything seems to be fine aboard now...
-
I heard about that! Maybe only ice breakers should go there...
-
Well, even ice breakers may suffer a total black out.. ::)
-
Hmmm, maybe we should leave the Antarctic to the penguins then ::)
-
That's it - and the same would be great for the Arctic too - without any pinguins of course, but with ice bears or so ;)
-
Yep ;)

If she was as strong as her wooden namesake, she should have been in no danger. :)

Hey, that a good point there mvsmith...still she seem to have some technical problems that were ignored...sadly this is what happens when people ignore even the smallest problems.

You do realise that this topic has been dead for THREE YEARS?!?
Two, actually...
-
I was looking at the 2007 bit.
-
Well, you weren't looking properly then, were you McG... ::)
;D
-
Yes,some people like to reanimate topics, which are dead for some time,in some cases more than 2 years.
Marc
-
And some people like to complain about it, Marc :P
Equally some people like to point out that if there is a reason to re-open an old topic it is better to do so than start another topic called, say, "iceberg sinks Explorer in Antarctica MK2 - 'The revenge of the iceburg' "
